Woman calls police after scam artist attempts to collect money
2 hrs 46 mins ago | 264 views | 0  | 2  |  |  DURANT ? A scam artist called a local woman and told her that if she did not pay a $360 fine, she would be served with a subpoena at her job.

The victim told Durant Police Officer Scott Phelps on Thursday that a man who identified himself as David Clarke called her and said he works for the Federal Crime Unit Law Services. According to police, he told her that he needed her attorney?s information because he was about to file charges against her.

He told her that if she did not pay a $360 fine within two hours, he would come to her place of employment and serve her with a subpoena. According to the report, the caller knew where the woman worked, and also verified the last four digits of her Social Security number, plus her birth date. The caller claimed that she had taken out a loan over the Internet and never paid it back.

According to police, the woman then called an attorney who told her that a possible scam artist may have stolen her identity.

The man called back and said if she paid the loan off over the phone with a credit or debit card, he would drop the charges. The woman did not comply with the caller?s demands, according to police, and when he called a third time, she told him that she had contacted the local district attorney?s office. The man then became hostile and hung up.

According to police, the number that he was calling from, 714-408-4296, is from a residence in Anaheim, Calif

Jack Smith called me again at work today and asked why I have not called him to verify my identity.  I told him that I would not give him any information until I found out what it was all about.  He said he has an affidivate to read to me that will explain everything.  I played along and let him continue.  He gave me a partial SSN and then asked me my name.  Needless to say, neither was mine.  He kept pressing me for my personal information so that he could verify that I am not the person he is trying to get in touch with.  After a few minutes and a lot of questions that ended with a 'NO' answer from me.  He finally gave up and wished me a good day.  If these call you please document what is said and call the FTC and the Attorney General of your state.  Thanks again for all the posts and information.

its not a company its a bunch of con artists getting our information somehow.  i did a little research and some say that if u ever got a loan with cash net usa, supposedly that their systems were hacked into and thats how they got peoples information?  I cant verify this but thats what I have seen.

It is very scary and I recommend everyone call their local PD when it happens, as well as their attorney general.

The people that spoke to me was maggie williams and david stark, all with serious middle eastern accents.

A legitament collection agency by law is not allowed to theaten you in anyway, especially the ways in which I have read about here.  All Collection activities are governed by the Fair Debt Collections Practices act.  Read about it.

I got a phone call at work from one of these guys today saying that they had 3 lawsuits against me sitting on his desk.  He called himself Jack Smith and had an extremely heavy accent and was hard to understand.  When I started asking questions about where he got my phone number, why he was calling me at work, what they were about, and what the name of his firm was, he started to get irritated and hung up.  I decided to call back using a different phone and all I got was a voice mailbox that was full and could not take any messages.  A couple of minutes later I got a return call from them and it was not even the same person, I think he said his name was Clark, and he wanted to know why I called them.  Again, when I started asking questions about why they were calling me and who they were, he hung up.  The really weird part is that I could here tons of background vocals and it sounded more like a tele-marketing firm.  I called the local police and reported this to them.  I think I will e-mail the Attorney General and let them know what is happening.  If they call again I will try to record what is said.  This is all great advice to share.

We have to all do our part to get this company shut down.  If we all make sure to record and document what they are saying, we can exact what they are threatening on them.  Ryan was the name of the individual threatening me too.  This will not stand.

I have got several calls today saying the exact things that everyone above was saying, that the police were coming out to arrest me and take me to jail for a "cybercrime" I had no idea what they were talking about and they kept hanging up on my when I would ask any questions. Then they would call me back screaming at me, the guys name was Ryan and spoke with a very think hard to understand accent. They had all of my information and told me unless I paid $555.00 today i would be arrested and held in jail for 7 months. This is very scary i was in tears, my husband tried calling them back and asking what company they worked from and they kept hanging up on him. I too am calling the police and reporting this.

Just the threats they were making, it makes a person pretty uneasy.  I guess the "Police arresting me" put me a little on edge, it's a scary thought that someone can pick up a phone and say things like that.

100% sure. what makes you feel otherwise?  If this was a legit debt collector, there are certain laws that govern over them, called the FDCPA, and what they do is HIGHLY illegal for a debt collector.

I gave them every piece of information that I could, the number that showed on my display when they called, the number they advised me to call, they listened to the voicemail, and i took notes when they were telling me what is going to happen.  I filled out a report, and I am closing out all my bank accounts and reopening them.  I also ran my credit report (free annual report) and saw nothing out of the ordinary.  I am still going to fill out information on identity theft, as I am no going to play around with this.  I have a case number, and they are sending the information to the district attorneys office.  I am also going to send this to my attorney general, and the FTC.  the police officer said that if they call again, play along, just know that they are playing you, probe them, ask them questions, offer to fix whatever the issue is, and take notes of EVERYTHING.  I have set to record the convo, found that nifty little gadget on my phone a little too late sadly.  Good luck to everyone on this!

Hey everybody FYI - this is a long running scam, if you ever applied for or took out a payday they have bought or stolen your information.  They will threaten all kinds of crazy stuff - arrest for fraud, cyber cime, decetion etc.  They are scammers. I have been getting these calls every couple of months for a while.  I have verified with the two companies I had loans with that they were paid off, but that doesn'y stop these people.  I bet they had thick middle eastern accents and gave you alot of you rinfoamtion, they have stolen it, that's how they know so much about you.  Stand up to them, they are horrible, they even called my work, forntunatly my boss was very understanding. Report them to your state attorney general, the FBI and homeland security.  Give them any names and numbers that you have and keep posting onthis site when you get calls, the numbers change often.  Also, check out the warning from the Kansas Attorney General Steve Six.
Good luck

I just went through this today, they knew my name, ssn, address, bank information, email address etc.  The "david" that I spoke with told me that if i interrupt him when he talks he will disconnect the call.  He opens up with saying, " in about 30 minutes there will be officers to come and take you to jail on account of issues with cybercrime"  i kept asking him questions anyways, if he was a 3rd party collector anything, and got no where.  he hung up on me, and i called the police and filed a report.

They called my last night on my personal cell phone and left a message on my work phone number.  They claimed that I was being charged with some sort of "cyber crime".  Unfortunately, he was hard to understand through his accent and bad phone connection.  After I started asking which law enforcement agency was involved, they got very defensive and claimed that they weren't affliated with any police department.  I informed them that I personally work with my local law enforcement agency and would verify any claims of charges against me with them, at that point they hung up on me.  They also had my address and other personal information.  This definitely feels like a scam and I'm forwarding all the messages that I recieved from them to my local Sheriff's office.
