I returned the call as they said it was in regard to my student loan, a guy of Indian descent answered, then when I asked who they were representing they said hold on and hung up.  DO NOT ANSWER THESE CALLS!  I'm concerned about how they had access to my phone number and knew I had a student loan.

Received call from an indian man calling himself MIchael Turner from the law firm of William Hopkins stating something about a criminal case against me and to contact them as soon as possible. I answered the phone and requested to this individual to speak clearly, he continued his conversation, I made the same request to speak clearly twice more and the indian hung up the phone. Few days ago I was trying to get a loan to pay some bills from a company located in Chicago and guess I spoke to an Indian guy calling Himself Mark Smith who took a vantage of my situation and took from me $ 240.00 as security refundable when loan was deposited in my account, but I stopped him and requested for my money back when he told me I needed to pay $ 100.00 more because of bad credit. He was nasty and basicly told me off.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Guy with Indian accent called my daughter to say she would be arrested if she did not show up to the Fullerton Ca. courthouse at a particular time. Said she took out an on-line loan (which she didn't) This was very upsetting to her. The guy was very threatening and had all of her personal information. The first time I calIed, on behalf of my daughter, he indentified himself as Williams Hopkins Law Firm. I called back several times after that and they refused to identify themselves. Pisses me off.

I received two calls from an male Indian oversea speaking rep claiming to be John meyer (or someone to that name his accent was too thick to understand) he claims he was calling from William Hopkins Law office (ooh I'm sooo scared). Claiming I can contact my local (lazy I added that) police dept since they will be serving me with court papers. He requested my Attorney contact them yeah sure he'll get right on that the number was (714)459-5143 mind you now these scammers can now put any number in they which for you to see on your caller ID and guess what when you attempt to call them back number disconnected so I'm sure when I get ready to call this number after overseas time it will not work oh well guess I'll wait until they call me back after being served(lol yeah I'll win the lottery before that happens).

I also received a phone call from "Michael" with Indian accent. stating that my file was being forwarded to police department, I also called back and he would not give me his name or the name of the company. I did receive a phone call from  "Michael"  with Indian or Arabic accent and left a message that my case file will be forwarded to police depeartment. Didn't say what for but he left a phone number (714) 459 5143 to call him back if I'm in doubt. So I called him and someboby answered the phone but he didn't mentioned what name of his law office. He said " How can I help you". I thought they 're suppose to introduce their self and their compnay. So I asked him  the name of his company and he doesn't want to tell me because he is not suppose to tell to anybody. And he asked my name. I told him that I won't give my name either if he won't give the name of his company. Then he hung up. I called again and still won't give the name so I told him that I got his phone number and I will report them to FBI for using police department to scam peoples like me. He hung up again.

Its not unusual for the extortion scammers to spoof a real company name and phone number.  I would contact the real firm first so they are aware they are being used and abused this way.

The phone number is a law office in LA area.  Person who called me was of India descent, why would a USA law firm have someone from India call me?  I suspect this law firm (William Hopkins) purchased an uncollectable debt from like a payday loan we applied like on line over 3 years ago and never received.  I use to get a ton of these calls and they always were men with Indian accent and always threatin' me with legal action and local Sherriff would serve me or arrest me.  They want to verify address but if company or whomever would issue a warrant, they would contact or go to local Courthouse and obtain the warrant in debt.  Law firm does have a website however............................................
