Basically the IRS says that they only contact you via U.S. Postal MAIL (and NOT via phone calls).

Tax season is here, and the IRS is warning about a major scam that's hitting Metro Atlanta.

This scam has been circulating for a couple of months. It originated on the west coast and has made its way to the southeast.

Scam artists call unsuspecting tax payers, pretending to be the IRS and demand money.

Shauna Kaler of Gainesville got the call two days after she filed her taxes this year.

She received an automated message indicating the IRS had urgent business with her and that she needed to call back immediately.

"So I called them back and they gave me their spiel, that they're an officer, gave me their badge, supposedly their badge number, all this stuff and they said that I was fraudulent on my income tax for the last 3 years," said Kaler.

She was alarmed because the person on the line sounded extremely legit.

"They sounded very professional at the beginning and they tell you they're looking for so and so...your name, they know the last four digits of your social security number and your address."

The scammer asked her for $800 in back taxes. They wanted her to wire it via Western Union right away. When she refused, she says the caller's tone changed.

"They were adamant on me, do you have an attorney? You need to get an attorney because you owe this. Otherwise you will be arrested. I mean they make it, they're very...I know it scared me enough to call you guys (Fox 5)," said Kaler.

She hung up, and called her accountant, just to be sure. "And she told me I was actually the 2nd person to call her here in the Gainesville area with the same phone call from the same number."

Kaler looked up the number that she had just dialed on the Internet. She found a slew of complaints other people had lodged against the same number with the same spiel.

Mark Green with the IRS says they are aware of the scam and he says it's extremely sophisticated.

"This scam unfortunately has victimized a number of individuals," Green said.

"This scam has a little twist to it because technology has provided the scam artists a way of indicating on your caller ID that the call is actually coming from the Internal Revenue Service."

Green says the scammers threaten to arrest the victim if they refuse to pay. Or in many cases, they threaten deportation. Green says the scammers tend to target elderly tax payers or communities with high populations of recent immigrants.

Green says there are victims in Toccoa, Columbus, Gainesville, and Atlanta.

"If you receive a telephone call from the Internal Revenue Service stating that you owe money, simply hang up. Know that this is a scam. The Internal Revenue Service does not, I repeat, does not solicit by telephone, text or email personal information." The IRS generally does business via U.S. Mail.

The phone number that the scam originated from (in Shauna Kaler's case) is 716-202-0659.The IRS is investigating trying to find the source of the scam.

If you get a similar call, they want you to call your local police and then report it to the IRS.

This is a scam! I just heard this on our local news. Any legitimate government business is handle through mail system and it is usually certified. They would not call or text and do not use scare tactics. Hang up and report the number to authorities. The news recommend calling your local police and connect the IRS.

I go the same call from 716-202-0659 and this guy did not mention my name. He is fraud without any doubt.
IRS never calls like this, even anyone call you they should know your name. Beware and don't respond to it. This just a scam.

The same person called me and told me if I don't pay I will go to jail, they did not even know my name, do not even bother calling back this people are just hustling for money looking for weak people to convince them that they own money to IRS.

I just got the same call stating that he if I dont call him back he wishes me good luck. I tried calling back from a different number but just a beep and no answer.

I got the same call on my voicemail. Jeremy Fox (with a foreign accent) an officer from "Internal Revenue Services" (notice the "s") He left a different phone number on the voicemail as a call back. I called back the number he called from. He answered right away "IRS". The message said "this message is for YOU" not my name. Crazy people.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!Got the same call today from this number and a Jeremy Fox. Claims to know my name and is from the IRS!  Bad India accent! Claims if I do not return the call immediately that "bad things are going to happen."
I searched the number and it is a landline in Hamburg, NY.

Igot a phone call from this number 716-202-0659 and someone named officer jeremy fox from IRS left a message that it was urgent I call him back, his accent was so bad that I could not understand half of what he said. I did call back the number and some other "officer" answered I forgot his name, this person didn't know my name and asked for my phone number, then he took my name and asked me if he I had a lawyer,then he started telling me what tax frauds have I done and how the IRS the FBI nd the Immigration dept. will come after me,and he wants to help me so he needs my informatio,since I had never done any kind of fraud or wrong ever I went off on him and told him send me something in mail,and I am not giving any information to him, he went on convincing me and then he hung up.This person had a very bad accent.This number and people behind this should be investigated.

I got the exact same call and same name jeremy fox,and same content,with a bad accent.Thanks for posting your message I was very upset with the call but now i feel better.

This guy called me from this number 716-202-0659,  left a message for me without knowing my name asking me to call him, also threatening me if I don't call him back it would be very bad for me, his name was Jeremy Fox, he said he is from IRS, which was a lie, cause IRS never calls you, they send you letters, they are hustlers, they are trying to collect money based on false information, do not answer them they are fake.
I called back it was a guy with an accent like from INDIA, with very bad English, trying to get my name and address, well if you are calling from IRS, you know those information.

Do not waste your time with them, just report the number to FTC.

received message on my minor sons voicemail exclaiming officer Jeremy fox from IRS/Internal revenue service.   with all the fraud lately I have not called back.  His voice mail says "this message is for YOU"  "if YOU do not take this call seriously"  If he was really calling for me then he would have my name.  my minor child would not get calls from irs.  total scam!!!!  I will wait to see if they call back and give them a piece of my mind!

I got a call stating that its an officer from the irs, stated that I have committed fraud, I have never committed fraud and the irs doesn't call anyone, they send out letters. I want to know who called and how he got my number. I want this investigated.

Just got a a call from this number and officer John threatening me to call back on an urgent matter from IRS. I did not call back :)

This just happened to me. Obviously a scam so...  Blocked my number and called them back. The first 6 or 7 times they didn't answer. Just hit decline on me. Then he finally did answer and I told him I was returning an urgent call from an officer. He asked for my number. I gave him a fake one. He told me I must have called the wrong extension as he had no record of the number given. Was gonna stop there but... Called back a few mins later, number still blocked. Took several tries again. He finally answered and I told him I was hitting "call back" and that it was his voice on my message. Told him I really wanted to know what his scam is. He said I need to call back from an unblocked number. I repeated my inquiry. He repeated his response and hung up. Obviously a real officer.

I got it twice today. It is certainly a prank..........

it happened to me as well...but when i called back he received the call and told me about some arrest warrant and need some attorney...........................i think its prank call

This literally just happened to me. Called twice and it beeps dead air and disconnects the call.

Some caller called me today named Jeremy Fox says he is a police officer. The number is 1-716-202-0659 Buffalo NY. Not sure who this is but when I call it just beeps and drops my call.
