This same number called an ex-husband and other family members who were not on the list that I filled out when I requested a loan.  Is there something that I can be done to this place.  Its called Harbinger Processing Group.

I have been receiving phone calls from Brad Douglas, Harbinger Group, in New York State.  Indicating breach of contract and civil suit would be placed within my residence county. He referenced my county and also my city.

He states his message is being recorded, and will be placed in my file.  He indicates he  is aware of my social security number, my bank account.  He also provided a file number reference.

He has also called my son; and told him the exact same thing pertaining to this as well as the file number.

He has also contact my work, my boss came into my office, date/time of the call and also the "file number" referenced, and wanted to know what was going on.

I did contact this person, information pertaining to a debt, which information was incorrect for balanced owed, and what has been paid, as well as also indicated to me what the total I was being sued for.  Also indicated that if I would make an offer he could approach the 3rd party and see if they would settle.

First, isn't it illegal for this 3rd party to call my work in such a manner, as well as my son?  This is inappropriate behavior, I believe.

Someone from that number called my cell phone, then my work number I answered it because it was 7:30am PST (too early).  I told them this is a place of business what is it regarding?  They said it was a personal matter.  I slammed the phone down.  Definitely not legitimate.  Thanks for the post's here everyone, now I know it was a scammer.

Someone from a weird number just called me I live in Ohio it came up a 999-999-9999 number on caller id I've noticed this number every couple of weeks.  This person said they were an investigator from JEC group the number he gave me to call back was 716-235-1006.  I don't do payday loans so I don't know what these people are trying to pull.  Do they just pick random people?

I just had a call similar to this. They called for a friend of mine though that stays with me sometimes.  They asked for him by name. I replied that he wasn't here, but I would take a message. The lady identified herself (which I have her name, if it's real) and said she was from the JEC Group.  This is what alerted me this that something funny was going on. She proceeded to tell me all his business and didn't know who I was.  I know that real debt collectors aren't allow to divulge another persons business.  In fact, I thought that they weren't even allow to leave messages anymore.  At any rate, she said that he needed to call her because "Check Fraud charges have been alleged against his name and where about to be filed against his social security number."  I know this is a lie because the man never writes checks. He's a cash and carry kind of guy.  I have his check book in my desk. No checks have been written from it in over 5 years. The number she called from showed as Private, Unknown Caller on my phone and the number she left for him to call back is 716.235.1006.

My thing was this, why was she calling my number.  How did she get the number?  He doesn't give out my number to anyone as his number as he has his own phone.  This is so freakish to me as it feels like my privacy is being invaded too.

They are probably trying to re-collect a old debt. It doesnt matter when it happened they will always find you and try to re-collect on it. Bottom line if you owe them money--PAY IT! and you wont get the calls!!

I received a call today from the same company! They asked for a prepaid card to pay a payday loan debt from 2009. They threatened I would be served within 2 days if i dont give payment over the phone as well as criminal and civil charges would go against me and I would be in court in front of the judge!! He said I have an hour to produce payment & there is no other way to pay it except a credit card or prepaid card???

This company contacted me recently, about an old Payday Loan bill that was not paid in Full! I had made payments with the original company and in actuality paid principal off two-fold but not all the interest. This company then wrote the interest off and sold it to this JEC Compnay that claims they are a Law firm. I do in Fact owe the money and I am not disputing that. This company persistently leaves me threatining and nasty voice messages stating that I will be sued and I am commiting fraudulent activity which I am not! I spoke with this company several times being polite. The last time I spoke with them the woman hung up on me being rude!.

Probably some of Tobias Boylands old cronys...google the name and read all about it.  Not a real law firm, wont take you to court because all their tactics are ILLEGAL in and of themselves.  Ignore, baby, ignore!!!!  Or pick up the phone and set off an air horn in their ears...that would be good for some chuckles.

I completely agree, I used to work for a payday loan place and they purge your file after so long and  pursue minimal on collections, they aren't happy but criminal charges my a#$. I am currently a paralegal and the attorney I work for says this is way past illegal, you can try sending a cese and decease letter, but if they're already working with illegal tactics then my guess is they'll just continue to try and scare people....they are scum and I understand that telemarkerter and collections are jobs but when you have to be that way to do it, just to make your money back for the debt list you bought......f*** off JEC!

I recently had dealings with this particular agency. Yes I did owe the amount they told me and I told Mr. Carlyle (888-260-7639 ext. 451) to let me call him back.  I called the orginal company that I got my loan from and it was confirmed that the loan was sold to his particular agency and I had to handle the payment with J.E.C group.  I then called the agency back and handled all my business.  I got a emailed letter stating that the financial obligation had been paid and 2 weeks after that I got a formal letter in the mail, signed that all had been taken care of.  I would have to say that I am reading horror stories on here about how some of these bill collectors are acting but fortunately for me I didn't get one like that. My grandmama always said you get more bees with  honey than you do vinegar. The bottom line if you owe a debt, call the original company you got your debt from to make sure they sold your account, then handle your business, BUT if you know you don't owe them anything, I would not even respond to them.

Everything about everyone's financial life - employers, incomes, major purchases like cars, credit cards, debts, wage garnishments, court proceedings, etc. - is public info and available for sale. Don't be scared just because someone calls and reels off publicly known info about you. Also beware that written-off debt does not go away until the stature of limitations for your state http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html runs out but is sold on to other debt collectors who'll try to collect on it. Beware that collectors may continue to try to collect even after the SOL runs out.

THIS IS A SCAM. While you can be served anywhere, even at work, legit debt collectors *CANNOT* instruct legit process servers to "ask for the CEO and explain everyting to him" and why this is a scam. The FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf allows debt collectors to contact places of work to locate debtors but collectors (themselves or via 3rd-parties) are prohibited from telling debtors' co-workers (like a CEO) about debtors' debts. The scammer is threatening to tell the CEO to blackmail you to repay already-paid debt. Instead of paying, a better strategy would be to tell the scammer you know it's a scam and tell all co-workers what happened, direct their attention to this 800notes page, and to tell them to read the FBI's warning on all sorts of fake debt collectors here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710  Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

THIS IS A SCAM. The Better Business Bureau has released many alerts on this scam, google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"  Scams mutate so read all the alerts to get a flavor of what they are. The FBI warns about fake debt collectors here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710   The FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires debt collectors to send paperwork identifying the creditor and amount owed within 5 days of initial contact; if you don't get then paperwork, then it's a scammer or legit-but-abusive collector trying to scare you but IN THIS CASE IT'S A SCAMMER because of what they told Diane 30 Jul 2010 below. You're correct that prepaid cards are way less traceable but I think the reason why they specify a prepaid card is it does not have the same level of consumer protection as a credit or debit card. Don't give out any info or pay anything, tell the scammer you know it's a scam. Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.
