All these calls are about is an online payday loan that has been defaulted on.  They call me several times a day for several days, then nothing for a few weeks then start calling again.  They are a third party collection agency that has bought your bad debt for pennies on the dollar and are trying to use scare tactics to collect.  The bad loan is already on your credit and has been written off by the payday loan company and your debt sold to the highest bidding collection company.  If you pay them, they are only making profit.  They say they have served court papers to you an need to go over page 15 of the document as a way to make you curious enough to call them.  They cannot serve you papers in the state of Texas for this type of debt.  DO NOT even answer their calls or call them back or you will NEVER get rid of them.  They give up after a while and will sell your debt to the next collection agency for even less pennies on the dollar.  Block their numbers when they come through.  You might have to block several different numbers but they will eventually leave you alone.

I am getting very annoyed with these scammers! Unfortunately they have alot of personal info including SS # and bank info. at least this number has English speakers instead of someone sounds like in India. Threaten with arrest at home or business if do not respond.
THERE ARE MANY OF THESE SCAMMERS. ALWAYS SEARCH PHONE NUMBERS YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE.

I just got that phone call today and they never specified who they were looking for but that I needed to call back for something by Oct 10 or I would be served at my home or place of employement. they never said who it was for or what it was about. It almost sounded like a recording.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I have no idea why they are calling me either but I get the same sort of harassment as mentioned in this thread.  The quit calling after I asked for their contact information, website info and what state they are located in.  I then informed them "The state I live in is Illinois and by state and federal law I am required to inform you that I will be recording this call, do I have your permission to record our conversation" The caller hung up without saying another word and I have not heard back from them since!

I spoke with the caller approximately 5 minutes regarding a debt from a payday loan I had never heard of.  I have credit monitoring via Experian and it simply doesn't exist under my name.  Not only did it never happen, I was enslited at the time making such a loan illegal and he got mad I said they should be trying to prosecute companies breaking the Military Authorization Act of 2007.  I was legitimately curious about the cirumstances regarding the loan because identity theft is a serious problem with enlisted and deployed service members and was trying to determine if someone had used my information.  He would not provide an account holder name the loan was deposited to, an account number the loan was deposited to, a bank name, any documentation pertaining to the loain. The only information he had was my SS#.  He would simply reiterate legal or not it was my debt to pay and my only option was to give him a credit card number over the phone.  Seems they buy faulty debts that have a statute of limitations about the expire and try their best to scare people into a quick payout.

I have been getting calls from 716-332-2357 and 716-332-2328 on my cell phone.  When I got my cell phone I made a decision not to answer any calls from callers with unfamiliar numbers.  I would call the call back, if he/she leaves a message indicating that he/she has a reason to contact me.  However, the callers from the two numbers listed above never left amy message.  Thought I am not picking up these calls, it is getting annoying that they call me a lot, on the average of 4 times a day.  Is there any way to stop them?

Jack Peters with the Law Offices of Lewis McCarthy...Claim they are a law firm trying to get money.  I don't know who they are and why they keep harassing me.  They say they need a credit card.  I said I don't have a credit card.  The only way they can take money from you is via credit card, no money order, personal check or cashier's check.  If they are legit, why won't they take money in any form.  Doesn't make sense.  Told them to stop calling me.

I just got a call at the same time as JP but I didn't recognize the area code so I let it go to voicemail. They didn't leave a message. It's my work cell phone - no one outside of work has the number so I suspect this is a random dialer.
