These people from the same numbers keep calling me as well. They called today 3times in a row and finally left a voicemail. It was a man named Robert Allen stating that I had 24 hours to call him back and that there's a civil complaint against me. After reading all these stories I'm debating if I should even call back. I'll be answerin next time they call and if they are rude and demanding to me I'll be rude right back. They clearly need to be stopped. Stories are from 2012 it's now 2014!

Have not read all of the posts but can see my story in those I've scanned.  Their calls are to me in Oklahoma looking for my daughter who has just moved home from California.  When I asked this morning who he was calling on behalf of he said City of El Cajon.  She lived there more than 4 years ago but never had dealings with the City . . .

As you wait through the sound of crickets for an answer, read about your consumer rights already cited on this page, and compare what you heard against what collections laws permit. Here's some more enlightening reading ...

Just as I took care of the first 3 companies for this debt, simply ask for a debt validation letter. Pisses them off completely. With all different "companies", the "gentleman" sounds the exact same....interesting!!!! Just provide me with what I ask and I will check with my bank.
Their final threat prior to hanging up on me was the have my job verified. Mmmmmm. I am a stay at home mom. No job.....so nice of them to verify that.

These criminals don't give up! Received several calls from this so-called PRG collection agency the past week. They are nothing but criminals trying to extort money from you, as previous posts have indicated. I know it's tough, but don't give in! Do report them to your state attorney general's office, but remember, they don't really care about that because they're criminals, and some putz or two of three will fall for their threat scam and give them money eventually.

Uuugh,  Joe/Amanda!!!!  It would seem to me that as a legitimate collector,  collecting a legitimate debt,  you'd be more than happy to provide validation of the debt,  per the FDCPA,   in a effort to expedite the receipt of payment.  Wouldn't you?  Why would you argue and not send validation,  per the law,  if you have it.  You're violating the law as well as the other persons rights under the law.   You're missing the big picture here.  To further address your comment that everyone knows if they owe a debt,   I  personally would make you send me the validation letter just to make you prove that you have the legal documentation and the balls to legally collect in court.  If not.....you don't get a damn dime and I say that with a smile.    I am lucky in that I am immune to insults from the likes of you and your kind.

What's "stupid on your part" is denigrating a comment going on three years old which merely says to be careful how you spend your money ... moreso when hostile strangers on the phone make demands for it. What's to argue about healthy caution?

} Why do you want a validation letter.

Why don't you want to send one? Federal law demands it of you, and it would only help make your case. You have a problem with paper trails?

} If you know you owe them, have the money

The consumer needs to know if she owes *you*, and that the account data are correct, and that the funds will actually satisfy a debt, and that you won't jerk her around. Apparently you can't get past the G-letter, never mind the rest of what honest agencies provide without protest.

Anyway, what do you care if a consumer wants proof of claim? Is that so hard to produce? You request media from the creditor and turn it around in maybe a couple weeks. If you're so confident of the claim, you'll get your cut without a fight, yes?

} look their address up and send them a check or money order. Simple.

Yeah, not so simple when PRG won't send a dunning letter and goes out of its way to hide its own location. Is it the incorporated Buffalo firm, the LLC with a half dozen aliases, or what?

} How dumbassy on your part.

I'm pretty sure "dumbassy" is not a word, but what can I expect when what you want is not a debt payment but a pound of flesh? Why don't you worry about "your part", like obeying the law and not feeling entitled to everything you can't have without lies and bullying?

} a scumbag debtor hiding from your obligations behind a law (which FYI come next year will no longer exist)

The "helpful" commentor never cited any laws, and neither did "PapaPena" in the reply chain. I can only guess you're riffing off the lawyer spam from Pete. Anyway, here it is a year and change later, and no vital consumer laws with even a marginal bearing on your insidious industry have been repealed. The FDCPA just turned 36 last month and continues to help distressed people kick your collective assets. As I write, the CFPB is reviewing submissions to its recent request for comments regarding long overdue revisions to the law, and perhaps creating new rules, which will make that barely plausible extortion racket you call "a job" much harder to keep.

It amazes me how easily you angry shills point the accusing finger while failing to notice the three others pointed back. You cry and moan your myth that consumer law creates an escape hatch from valid debt, but it's you lot "hiding from your obligations" set by the same laws. Don't even try that other canard of shiftless welfare queens dodging an efficient collections machine. Most Americans abhor debt and work a real job which does not require them to swindle their neighbors. One of their biggest complaints about your industry is that they are called day and night by abusive turd lumps about debts they don't owe and people they have never met. Meanwhile you cling to your fantasy image of the willful deadbeat and refuse to admit when you're wrong.

They told me they were calling about a debt from 2005. I don't know anything about this debt but I laughed in their faces and when I asked for the address the lady asked why I wanted to know and I told her I wanted to send them a cease and desist letter. Then she said if you don't pay this we will take legal action. And I said go ahead but have you ever heard of anything called the statute of limitations? She promptly hung up the phone. LOL

They have started again with the threats of legal action.  My response was that no legit lawyer resorts to these types of collection tactics, and that I filed with the U. S. Marshal's' office because I work right down the street from their offices in Washington DC.  I had almost a year of relief, then after the Target security breach, these menaces started back up again.

No "real" company who have a "legal" proceeding against you will call you first and it IS ILLEGAL to call you at work. And who files court papers based on SSN?? Desperate a**holes. Tell all your relatives and friends they contact to tell anyone who calls them about you that THEY DO NOT KNOW YOU and to HANG UP. Then ignore all phone calls..........yes, they will sell whatever debt they THINK they have to the next bottom feeder but don't give in.........they are desperate scum and also contact your state Attorney General Office and report them. By NOT answering your phone, you are forcing them to leave a message and then you have the recording as proof of fraud on their part and if they call all day every day, BLOCK THE CALLS, keep track of them and report it also as harassment.

I got a call looking for someone who is not even at my cell number and the caller id showed 716-335-9036. I called back, was asked if my name was so and so, I stated "no you have the wrong number" and I hung up. Right away, call # 2 from same number and this time THEY CLAIM THEY ARE CALLING FROM A FEDERAL OFFICE and this time have an accent and tell me to stop calling them???????????  I did call them back, left a message demanding to know WHAT FEDERAL OFFICE, because they stated they also have my call back recorded when I hung up and the message I left for them was that they have until noon tomorrow to call me back with the NAME OF THE FEDERAL OFFICE they are calling from because they are stupid enough to leave a recording stating that fact and NO FEDERAL OFFICE DOES THAT. PLUS I AM NOT THE PERSON THEY ARE ASKING FOR. I will pursue them..........to the ends of the earth and the law, they have f****** with the wrong b****. I KNOW THE LAW and I will own their illegal boiler room a**e**.

Yes, it's illegal - contacting and giving information concerning the reason for his call is a blatant violation of the FDCPA.  It is also a violation to threaten you with a lawsuit in order to scare you into paying a debt.  Refusal to mail proof that you owe a debt and proof that the caller has the legal right to collect said debt is yet another violation of the FDCPA - and per the FDCPA, in such a case, you owe the caller NOTHING.  Report the caller to the FTC, FBI, Dept of Justice and your state's Attorney General.

Keep recording all calls "Travis" makes to you, and keep a log of the dates/times he calls.  Try to get a mailing and physical address out of him (refusal to give this is yet another violation of the law).  If you do get an actual address - Google it - because more scammers than you'd care to think about actually "rent" either a mail drop box at a UPS store, or a "virtual" office.

A man named Travis who says he is an Investigator for PGR Group has called and left messages on my employers answering machine stating that he needs to talk to me for a legal matter, he needs to send me legal documents, leaves a case number, threatens that I better call back within the hour, says also that hes calling for a debt recovery group. He has left messages on my son's cell phone stating again that he's an investigator and he is filing a civil suit against my social security number and that I had better call within a certain time period. I called this number back and the "lady" who answered asked me for my socail security number right away which I refused to give, she transferred me to Travis who asked me for SS# again and my address. I again refused and asked him if he was a lawyer or an inversigaot, he ignored me and continued asking for personal info. I asked him them if was going to sue me or take legal action against me and this time he said yes. I laughed and told him I was recording this phone call and did he have my address he said yes, so I told him to send me a debt validation letter and hung up. Isn't all this illegal on his part?

Here's another thought...

Stop calling people purporting to be an attorney's office, (which is illegal), and when you do make sure you have a copy of the FCRA, (required by law) in front of you during the call, 9which you wont).  And calling the employer, (also very illegal) will not bode well for your business once the FBI and Attorney General office is notified.  Get a real job Amada and stop harassing people.  You do know even tho you work for this company and take their direction, YOU can ultimately go to jail.  Call someone with deep enough pockets to hire an atty and find out for yourself!, lol

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.
