This is a scam operation trying to get personal information like your social security number.  I called them on it directly on the phone but these people don't give up easily.  They act like they are legitimate and keep on going and keep calling.  Just ignore them or even call them back and mess with them and waste THEIR time.  Ask for THEIR social.  Major scam artist losers!

I was called by them three times today, they did not leave a message so I called it back.  When I told them that I had recieved calls from them today they wanted my info.  I told them that they already had my number and could search by it.  The guy I talked to said that if they have my number they would already have my name so there was no harm in giving them it.  (DUUH unless its the wrong number...)  I refused to give them my name, and asked them to identify the companies name.  The guy refused to tell me who they were or what it is that they do.

They call my home every other day and leave no message.  Once they got me and asked for my husband. I said he wasn't home and they said if he has any questions he can call them back at some number they read off.  Just to mess w/ them, I said since you're not saying who you are or what you want, how will I know if he has any questions???  Then she identified the company as ACI Collections and was calling about his delinquent mortgage w/ BofA.  I said oh really?  What address is that mortgage for? She read off some address and I said we don't live there.  Then she read off another one and I said we don't live there either. Then she said it must be a mistake then and I said "do you think???"  They just want your info people...don't fall for it!

Legitamite collection agency. They represent J.P. Morgan/Chase bank. If they're calling you, you probably owe money. In my case, at least, it was for real.

This number continues to call us after reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Communications Commission.  They have many number that are similar - all the same caller.  Caller ID  says Buffalo NY but it's a landline in Williamsville NY.  Another recent number- 7165806103.  When you get to a live person, they identify as ACI.  Even though we have told them they have the wrong number over and over, they continue to harass us.   We've never done business with ACI.

Yeah I've worked in collections and everywhere I worked they were extremely strict on the laws of each state, sometimes obv some collectors can f*** up if there new and jus gettin the hang of things but it all pretty much comes down to not us trying to scam u debtors but u debtors trying to scam expenses that u made and just cause llife got rocky u think u can put it off like u never ran up the bill.

Since Saint Fan's post is over a year old, it's unlikely SF will read your reply. I hear what you're saying and cannot disagree with your premise but think you've a rather narrow view of the world.
There are 2 kinds of debt collectors - ones that work per your description for a fee and ones who collect on debts they bought wholesale and they get to keep everything they collect since they now own it. Debt buyers by necessity have to collect debts on their own; a 3rd-party debt collector would cost more money on top of what was spent to buy the debt in the first place. Debt collectors of the first kind would not buy debt and those of the second kind would not work for a fee; they've simply different business models.
Saint Fan said the collector had asked for SF's daughter who is presumably the debtor so your "Why is it weird to think that somebody would call you repeatedly when you don't pay your bills?" is misdirected at SF. There's no indication whatsoever that SF isn't paying his/her bills.
Add abusive-but-legit and scam debt collectors to the mix and I don't blame anyone including debtors from shunning debt collection calls like the plague. Talking like a civilized person to debt collectors only works for legitimate ones. 800notes is rife with reports of debt collectors screaming obscenities at debtors and scam collectors who frighten even non-debtors into paying them for a non-existing debt. Not to mention hangups, calls before 8Am and after 9PM, etc. This is nowhere near the level playing field the FDCPA was supposed to bring.
Your admonishment to Saint Fan, while understandable, reflects debt collection in a white-picket-fence world. Debt collection in the real world is quite different.

debt collection agencies don't buy debts, they are handed off to them from the company your daughter originally did business with, and then the agency gets a small percentage of the debt in return for handling delinquent accounts that the original company basically gave up on.

Why is it weird to think that somebody would call you repeatedly when you don't pay your bills?  And why is it surprising that people who don't pay their bills may be hard to find and wrong numbers may occur?  How would you find some a***ole who owes you money?  Sit around and hope they pay up?

the numbers they call are not looked up in the phone book, companies owed money can access credit reports and therefore all the numbers that person ever listed as a contact or alt. contact in their whole life basically.  Reporting debt collection agencies to the BBB is a waste of time.  You can sue them, just like you can sue anybody, but chances are you'll still get calls when you don't pay your bills (or someone else will, like your parent or someone with a similar name or your old phone number).

I have debts and when debt collectors call me I talk to them like a civilized person rather than a spoiled brat.

I've been through it all and I can tell you that ACI is a legit, albeit scumbag, collection agency.
No collection agency is going to be nice to you, trust me on that.
I'm dealing with them right now over a scumbag Credit Card Co called Credit One Bank out of Las Vegas Nevada.

All that being said, if this is your first time dealing with a collection agency because of your inability to pay for a Credit Card debt, don't freak out, they will do whatever it takes to get their money.
They buy these debts for Pennies on the Dollar from Credit Card companies and naturally they want the highest return for their investment.
In most cases, they buy the debt for around 30% of its worth.
For instance, if your collection debt is say $1,000.00, they buy it for $300.00.
If they can intimidate you to pay the $1,000.00, they make $700.00.
At most, if the collection is new, you'll only be able to negotiate for around 80% of the debt.
As time goes on, they will work with you and lower the amount until some kind of payment can be negotiated with you.
Usually by about a Year into the collection, they will settle for around 50% of the original debt.

Unless you're wanting to buy a Car or Home, you're credit has already taken the hit, they can't do any more damage so if you're looking to buy either, then it is imperative you settle the debt as soon as possible, which gives them the upper hand if the collection is new.

Otherwise, don't worry about it, there's nothing they can do to you.
They can threaten all they want, but an unsecured Credit Card is just that unsecured.
There is no collateral in the contract.
They cannot put a lien on your House, they cannot garnish your wages, nor can they take possession
of any items you own, so take a deep breath and relax.

The best tool for stopping the harassing Phone calls is to get a call blocking Phone.
I have the Panasonic KX-TG933IT.
Make sure you have caller ID because what this Phone does is magic.
When you get the harassing call all you have to do is program it into the block list, the Phone does the rest.
The next time they call, the Phone will ring once, then it answers and hangs up on them automatically.

I'm not telling you all this to get out of what you owe, just to empower you so you can have the ability to settle your debt in a fair way.

As for me, I'll let them "Harass" me for another 6 Months, the give them a call and TELL them I'm ready to settle for what I actually owe, not what they want me to pay.
If they get ignorant, I'll be nice and tell them I'll call back in 3 Months.
98% of the time in my dealings, the settle when I cal them back.
About 60% of the time, they settle on the first call.
The key is to be polite but strong and confident when you call them.
If they try to bully you, demand to speak with a supervisor and make sure you're cordial but firm with them as well.
If they try to bully you, simply tell them you'll call back in  3 Months and stick to it.

I've only had 2 collection agency's that went to the third call back, which was another 3 Months.
After 6 Months they will negotiate, I guarantee it.
The main rule is to be fair about it.
If you owe $500.00, offer $500.00, even if the late fees and other crap add up to $900.00 or over $1,000,00 explain to them that your original debt was $500.00 and stand firm.
Don't try to worm out of your responsibility, you be fair and demand they be fair as well.

Like I said before, if you're planning on purchasing a Home or Car then you'll have less of a bargaining Chip, just make sure you don't show your hand to the collection agency because if they find out you're trying to buy a House, they know the have you up against the Wall.
If you have to postpone your purchase for 3 Months it'll be worth it in the end because you'll get a substantially lower interest rate on your purchase.

I hope this helps someone out there.

I receive several calls a day from 7165508150. After talking with them they say that I owe from a payday loan that I have already talked with the actual company about repayment. After I told them that they were trying to scam me out of money, the guy "Andy Thomas" got extremely rude and told me that I would be going to court and have to pay a crazy fine of $5000+ dollars for fines anad fees.

I had a call from 716-580-6110. I answered it and was told this is a company called ACI which turned out to be a debt collection company. I had an account with Chase Bank which became overdrawn and the bank charges piled up so far so fast that I soon found myself owing over $1000 for a $30 nsf check. They gave me five choices, all of which were unsuitable for me. No other options...so they turned me over to the "Supervisor" who proceeded to threaten me, indicating it appears to him that I have no intention of paying at all since I won't agree to one of their choices, so he will just tell Chase to lein my existing bank account with another bank and they will take the money and block my account. They don't really care if I make my mortgage or my car note as long as Chase gets their highway robbery bank fees! Criminals.
I hung up on him and then called back to see if I could make a smaller pay arrangement and they asked my SS#. gace it to her but she did not find it in her records, so now I fear they may use it for some other purpose. She again offered me the same "deals" as before. Then I realized I was being worked over.
Not sure how I will handle this yet, but my advice is don't answer your phone for this number.

We keep getting hang up calls from this number at our office.  They never say anything when we answer. We hang up after they don't respond to the 3rd "hello?"  We use VoIP phones, so we had to look up our line # for the caller ID.  Caller name is not identified.  We hear a lot of noise in the background, but nobody every says anything.  They are apparently trying once every hour (that's how many times it appears on the log today).

A man called and left voice mail asking for me by name. He spoke very fast and it was hard to understand what he said his name is ("Kyle Jones" or something like that). He gave the callback number 1-888-400-7804, but his called ID number showed 1-716-580-6110, which made me suspicious. He also left an extension number and a reference number. I have not returned his call.
