they call me daily and when i pickk up, they hang up.Now that I know it's a scam I'm telling them that this call is tapped.

This is a solicitation from the Police conference of NY.  They call all the time.......

This number called me yesterday. A guy with a fake middle-eastern-wanna-be accent tried to tell me it was for the NY State Police Chief's...somehting or other. I told him he wasn't getting anything, and just hung up. I did *69 to get the number. Next time, I'm using *57 trace to trace the call, and I'll be using that each and everytime from now on.

Anne, if freaks like this guy can use that crap to call and harass us, why don't *WE* use the spoofcard, and use it to annonymously call everyone in washington until they get off their a**es and put an end to it? I mean, the only way they'll do something is if they themselves are involved, right? 'Course, it can't just be one of us. It'd have to be nearly every one who posts in order to get washington together on it fast enough to actually stop it from happening, but it would be something!

Just received yet another call from this number on my landline. It's 8:30 PM on a Wednesday, for goodness sake!
There was no one on the other end of the line, though.

started calling today...and thought I'd look it up..and whaddya' know..
Next time they call I'll say they have the wrong number.

I used a reverse phone directory and the only thing it would tell me for free is that this number is in the Bronx

a damn lotta good that's gonna do.  is everyone's only solution to be rude?

OK, here's the deal,


Go to SpoofCard.com and it will explain on a smaller scale how this is being done and why you can't call back the number that show's up on your caller ID.

IF you are getting these calls, especially if you are getting it every day or twice a day you must report this someone. I'm not sure who. The FCC, Police, FBI whoever. BUT make sure to tell them that the number that shows up on your caller ID is not the number they are calling from.

BUT BEFore you do that, next time they call get as much information out of them as you can about their company and what they are offering while giving away as little information about yourself as you can. Give them a false name. Ask who you are speaking to/what their name is. What the name of the company is, what their website is called. Ask if you can think about it and can you call them back on this number or a different number.  seem interested.

EVen better if you can record the conversation or at least put it on speaker phone so someone else will hear the conversation.

if you get a phone call where they ask for you by name (it may start out with some job application you filled out, that's how it did for me). here's the tricky part, when they ask for phone number verification...give them the number they dialed: your number (I mean, they already have it, don't they), then when they ask for you by name, simply say you don't know that person.  Make up some name to tell them.  ALL the while keep asking what company this is, what's the website, phone number, email address SOMething.  

THis happened to me because I believe I tried to apply for a job on craigslist.com (which i love dearly) and the email like that it had for the posting connected me to a webpage called employmentselect.com.  So, I don't think craigslist is dangerous, just beware if the email like takes you to a web page.

when I told the nasty women that I had no IDEa who "my real name" was, she said there must have been a mistake and that i wouldn't be called again.  I'll wait a few days and let you know if I get another call.


Put it all in your complaint.

If you all are as annoyed as you say you are and your bark really is as big as your bite, then complain complain complain BUT have something to back it up with.  "Caller refused to give me a name, company name, telephone number, email address, shoe size AND I have a witness/I have it recorded"

this is absolutely ridiculous and we must stop it.  Don't let these people invade our homes and our phones.

I got a call and called it back from another number and it was some police fundraiser.  If your sick of getting these calls do this:
1. Answer the phone, very politely
2. Listen to their pitch, then interrupt them in the middle of their sentence and quickly ask them if you can get their home number so you can call them back.
3. Thier response will definately be that they cant give thier home number out.
4. Respond very apathetically, "Yes, I'm sorry, you probably don't want anybody calling you at home bothering you"
5. Wait very carefully for them to agree with you, which 100% of the time they will.
6. Then reply " Good because that is exactly how I fell about it too" and then abruptly hang up.

You will not only feel very good, you will look forward to using this line on every telemarketing call  Write this down, it works every time. Enjoy!

keeps calling everyday, must be a scam.  How do we get rid of this.

This is a scam.  I got a letter from the NYC Police a few months ago saying they don't do any phone solicitations.  Obviously a response to complaints about these guys.  How do we stop it, indeed?

I'd love to hear the questions they asked Bernie's kid.

I am also getting this call but they hang up when I or my husband answer, but funny enough when my kid answered he assked a lot of questions.

i got a call too from this number from "Police Chief'.He sounded demented.

I get this call often on Sundays!, for "Chief of Police".. how do we stop it?

I got a call but they hung up after three rings.

I live all the way by Fort Drum. Tonight they called my home phone and when I answered the phone some girl asked for my husband by his first name. My husband is deployed, I called the number back and got the donation message. I have no idea how these people got our home number we are unlisted.....

I received a call from this number @ 3:57 pm on Sunday 11/9/08 from someone posing as a representative of the NYS police department asking for my monetary assistance for a program that protects children from sexual predators in neighborhoods like mine. I am very aware of the closest offenders to my address. Though I was not pressed beyond 2 requests, (the second which asked for a $20 donation), they hung up with a pleasant "have a nice day". BTW I do not live in the 718 area code so this alleged donation....would it have even benefitted my area? Not likely.

Someone from this number called on a Sunday and left no message. When I googled the number, I found all of these posts.

they call frequantly and never leave a message. it doesn't say who it is it only says new york on my called id. i want them to stop calling.

I got a call from this number (it came up on my caller id) and he asked for my wife.  I told him she wasn't available, I was her husband and how can I help you.  He kind of muttered something and then said he was calling from "Zintel" with a courtesy call.  I asked, "What's Zintel" and he said, "It's just a courtesy call, we'll try back later" and hung up.  

THIS IS DEFINITELY A SCAM -- IT IS NOT THE NYPD IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM (INCLUDING THE PBA).  DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY THINKING YOU ARE SUPPORTING THE POLICE!

This is nothing but  scam, report it as such, When you call the number you get an automated answering machine setting you up for further calls and donations. The police do NOT collect moneys in this way

Just to give everyone some information.... the Police Department NEVER EVER requests money from anyone (except maybe the mayor when it comes to  raises).  I believe that this is a scam.  Also, the number comes back as unpublished.  
If you are going to give money to donations, there are various legitimate places to give, not just someone calling you and asking for money.  Many Police unions have various charities where you can give money (ex. Families of 9/11 victims etc.)  You can find their websites online and see for yourself.  
Oh yeah.. as an FYI..... THERE IS NO POLICEMAN'S BALL EITHER !!!
