They have been calling my cell phone over and over again.  I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, so I've never picked up.

All of you need to read this!!!!! I knew people working for this company. One of them I knew made over $1,500.00 a week after taxes, I couldn't believe it! Until this person should me a check. The people working for these places do not care if you are annoyed by the calls or not and ,there were so many people working there and the affiliate companies, you were probably never called by the same person twice so when you rant about being called soooooooo many times there is no empathy. the reason people get calls and noone is on the other line is the company is calling from an automatic dialer; after you pick up it takes a couple seconds for the caller to be connected to you; if you hang up thinking there is no one on the line the caller codes the call as an answering machine and it calls you back in 1-3 hours usually. The " do not call list" is a false sense of security. only stops a small portion of the calls. Most companies  share information, mostly if you make purchases online, tv, bounce a check, or even if you order a service like cable or phone. When people yell and get angry at telemarketers it doesn't bother them, there job is to push and sift through the no's and get that yes! if you hang up they code call as not interested and dialer calls you back a few hours or a day later in which time hopefully a better caller will get you to say yes. when you say you are on the do not call list its the first time the caller has heard of it and is supposed to say he/she will put you on the company's do not call list. BUT ! if you piss them of or even if they just want to annoy you. they will say they are putting you on the do not call list and code call as answering machine, so dialer calls you back right away just because. THEY DO NOT CARE IF YOU FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THE COMPANY. IT WON'T AFFECT THEM! Plus its not as easy as you think to take these companies to court or get that supposed money from them by filing the complaint or suit. you have to jump through hoops. more trouble than its worth. the people that answer phone and say they are on the do not call list and now the company is going to have to pay them, are just stupid. telemarketers do not get calls like this at home(do you know why?). when someone does call, they say they do the same job and VERY NICELY! ask them to take them off the calling list and thank them for doing so. This will stop the calls. Usually people are being called by several different companies or when taken off one list are called by an affiliate. Be patient and nice , say you do the same type of work and the calls will stop. these sales reps are just trying to make a living and will understand, but if you irritate them can make having a phone hell.
ps. you're welcome

I picked up this call yesterday. They said i had been rewarded for some vouchers for gas and airline tickets as a valuable customer. They also wanna sign me up for their 14 days free trial program. Then they asked me to verify my bank account information. i gave it to them before i realized its a scam...they also asked me to set up a password, which they asked me what my favorite color was. i used the same question for my credit card security question. I finally became suspicious and said i wasnt interested in their program. so i called the credit card company and changed the question, and i went to the bank to cancel my checking account cuz they told me if those people have my account number, they can simply access my accout.

When I called them back, some young man who sounded very anxious said he needed my number before he "could speak with me" (I come up unknown on caller IDs). He was so obnoxious, I hung up on him. You can file a complaint on www.donotcall.gov if your number has been put on the list for over 30 days.

This is unbelieveable.  They called me numerous times and I called back, thinking it was something else.  They said my first name and then proceeded to tell me that they had all of these vouchers for me because I have had a checking accoung so long with them.  I asked them what checking account and they said that I had to verify it.  I told I am absolutely not giving them any banking information and they hung up on me.  I received another call and I yelled at the guy to put me on the DNC list and he gave me the customer service number.  I yelled at her and told her if I ever received another call I was filing a police report.

This is absolutely unbelievable that we have to worry about this.

You guys need to check out the certegy data theft incident.  The thief has a business in Largo, FL - this is the same place that Variety did the direct marketing campaign.

Update: Certegy does the checking account verification for Amazon. See this link:
http://www.amazonsellercommunity.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1546998

Amazon should be pressed to look into the matter. They have a vested interest in assuring their customers' transaction data is secure.

Although Certegy performs the same service for other vendors, the popularity of Amazon explains why so many of us could trace it to an Amazon transaction.

To all:

Just like Mike writes on 7/10/07, I also received a letter from Certegy (also in Florida) explaining how that my financial information had been improperly sold to telemarketing companies through a rogue employee who is now fired and is facing prosecution. I believe that because of our efforts, authorities were able to trace the source of the breach and criminal charges are underway. However, damage can still be done with your information, so be alert!

I have started receiving the calls again, so Variety is still using the info. I hope to show them the following web site explaining the discovered security breach and actions now being taken:

http://www.certegy.com/FISPressRelease7-3.pdf

If you get the letter from Certegy (there were 2.3 million records transferred), read it carefully. They have good advice on how to easily place a free Fraud Alert to all credit reporting agencies, which further entitles you to a free credit report.

For details on the Certegy story, please see:
http://blog.absolute.com/certegy-data-breach-result-of-employee-betrayal/
http://trustedtoolkit.blogspot.com/2007/07/when-dba-goes-bad.html

Be careful who you trust, defend your security vigorously, and stay alert!

I have been receiving phone calls from this number for the past 3 days at least 3 times a day.  I figured it was a bill collector and did not answer.  They never left a message.  Well today, I decided to face the "bill collector" and called them back.  To my surprise, the phone did not even ring on the other end, this guy answers the phone and immediately says with no introduction, "Is this Timeka?"  I say yes, and he goes into his prepared scam pitch.  Just as some of the previous scenarios above, the free gas, great customer, no obligation, only $1.95 charged to my card.  Well this guy goes to put me on hold, said he was going to repeat what he had just said, but record it this time. But before he did, I stopped him and told him I wasn't interested.  Of course he makes his last desparate plee to con me out of my money with "It's free stuff".  I told him again I wasn't interested and hung up.  I was so surprised to see other people getting a call from this same number.  It seems that they would be a litte more clever with revealing the same phone number to potential victims.

Just so everyone has the most complete picture possible...about a month ago I started getting twice-daily calls from this number; I never answered, and after a couple days of it I called back and followed the automated instructions to remove myself from their list. It took two tries, but the calls did stop. Well, just today I got a letter in the mail from Certegy, a check authorization service used, I believe, by Amazon, saying that they'd been victimized by an employee who'd broken his confidentiality agreement and sold information to third-party "direct marketing organizations". Anyway, I thought people going through this mess should know that these people getting your info is at least not part of Amazon's standard operating procedure, and is in fact the result of someone breaking the law - even if the marketers themselves might not be.

I called the police, they called the # to find out how they got my check acct. Turns out some places that run checks electronically are tied in through these people and they only have the last 4 of ur acct. They didnt call me back for about 6 months. If u call the # u can select option 2 to "pass ur gifts on". Worked for me so far. Hope that helps.:-)

Called on my cellphone.  Called number back after reading this website.

Answered, "This is Variety, is this Steven Bxxxx?", using my full name.  They started to go into a magazine spiel, which I interrupted saying I DO NOT wish to purchase anything and to add me to your DNC (do not call) list.

At this point the operator stopped,  said she would happily add me to their DNC "disclosure" and would I like their customer service number to talk to to someone about this call? I said yes, and she gave me 1 877 777 2709.  She then re-iterated that she had added me to their DNC list, and it could take up to four days for it to go through and she apologizes if I get any calls in the interim.

They called me at work with the same scenarios as described above. When the Indian-accented lady couldn't get my bank routing number correct and I refused to correct it, she put "Jack Anderson" the 'floor manager' on the line.

Now, I'm not the least bit ethnocentric, especially being a Black man, but 'Ol Jack sounded more like his last name should have been Singh or Patel. When I asked how can they say I've manage my account so well as to be in line for gifts but they don't even know where I bank, then,.... //Click//

I hung up!

I get calls daily from this number and finally decided to call back the number myself. I got same spiel as everyone else. I told them to not charge my checking account for shipping of $1.95 because there is no money in there. She ask me if my account is in the negative and I said yes and I would be charged an overdraft if they charge my account. She then said well then they don't want to cost me an overdraft and asked if I had a different account to use, and I said the only other account I have does not allow ACH debits, only a debit mastercard withdrawal and she asked me what bank it is and I her and she said well they don't accept transactions from that bank because it does not allow ACH debits. I asked her why they have to charge shipping to my checking account, and she said because that is the only way to verify the owner of address is by verifying their checking account number, and to make sure they charge $1.95 shipping before sending out the voucher's and claim the gas vouchers and airline tickets. reason for them doing that is they don't want to send out a ton of packages of free stuff to someone who claims they will look over the program, and then just throw out the package and not look at and keep the free stuff, which will cost them to lose a lot of money for shipping charges. I told them I can't do it because I don't have money for shipping and she told me to call back when I do because there is no obligation to check out the program, and I can cancel the free trial immediately if I wanted to, and would not be charged $40.00 a month after 14 days, and she asked me to call back when I do have the money for shipping before she send out the vouchers. Sounds like a more swift way to weasel people out of their money!

We have noticed that this company is having their gas certs sent to a PO box on Walsingham Rd. in Largo Florida right down the street from our office. Customers have been told that freebeegas is the company but we are not, I am researching this company now and will post any findings. Please protect your banking account information!!!!!

This was the second time today that they called.  I answered the second time.  A man said they were affiliated with my bank (used the actual bank name) and said that they wanted to send my $400 in free "vouchers" or something.  I couldn't hardly hear because there was so much static.  You'd think they would at least use a land line.  I hung up as soon as he asked my to verify my address.

I am totally ticked right now. They sent me a whole bunch of crap and then worse I got one of their little package things late and they ended up taking 149.00 Out of my accountfor their membership fee that I told them I didnt want. Now I am having to go down and file a claim so I can get that money back. After I get the money back I am going to have to change my bank account and probably my cell phone number. that isnt going to be fun.

They called the other day and offered me a whole bunch of really sweet deals for $1.95. I declined because if i had done it, it would have over drafted our account. The lady who called heard our kids in the background and made a joke about knowing how it is with kids, and said she would call back another time. I asked her not to, and she just hung up. This morning we had a strange number call but nobody had answered (17272520432) then again a few minutes ago, the phone rang and i answered it. They asked for my husband, and when i told him he was at work, but i was his wife, he just hung up on me. I checked the vonage, and was shocked to see it was the same number as this morning. I looked it up and saw this page. I called them back, and they answered the phone saying hello, (husbands name). I said "no, this is his wife, I saw you guys had called, can i ask who this is?" she started to ask for him again, and i told her once again that i was his wife. She asked if i was on his bank account and i said yes. She started with the whole "well, we will be sending (husbands name) $500 worth of flyers miles and..." at which point i cut her off, telling her i had already heard this deal and declined it a few days ago. I asked her to put it in her system not to call me again and she said it wasnt possible, but that she would put me on the do not call list. She rattled off a bunch of snotty remarks that i wish i could have recorded, andi hope she caught it when i told her that we were already on the do not call list to begin with.

They called my 15 year old son's cell yesterday and stated that they were confirming his bank info.  He was being rewarded for maintaining an active checking account-(He doesn't have an active checking account-he has a savings account)He was going to receive free gas and travel vouchers.
"They" must not have too much info because they were not aware of his age-he doesn't travel and doesn't use gas.
I called the company back to verify the company name. I informed them that I would be reporting the name Variety and the phone number to the bank.    Next I went to the bank and informed them and they have started an investigation to verifty that the funds are secure.  My son doesn't buy anything off of Amazon.com as he doesn't have CCards or a checking account.
