Save your hate speech. Any charity that bothers me when I don't want to be bothered on my personal time deserves to be slandered. I don't care how real or unreal they are. I don't care if they ask for money to save starving rape-victim children with cancer. You call my phone when I don't want you, you are not getting a penny from me. But you are getting a few choice words.

Same deal - I picked up in 3 rings... caller (or machine) hung up on me when I did my COMPANY SPONSORED announcement.    It's likely the same automated dialing as the one that "hit" my fax machines 4 minutes earlier.

same thing here - no message left - but it concerned me as I had an automobile accident a few days before the call came in

Your belief that they are on the up is nonsense.  They not even a deductible charity.  They have numerous numbers.  You call their numbers when you call they cannot tell you the names of managers or Director/CEO which is a major red flag.  Also, their website does not list board of directors or specific office locations; another major red flag.  Do not send money to these people.  They tend also to hit seniors up after they get them once.  I can tell you as they managed to get hundreds from my father with Alzheimer's (after the first donation they now call weekly even after they told me they would not call back!).

When the caller asked for a $100.00 donation I asked how much they were donating to the family of Hector Ayala who was killed in a auto accident in Montgomery County Md. responding to a officer requesting help at a bar fight. His wife was having triplets and sadley he would never see these little girls. It is hard to believe that there are people that pray on the feelings of the community for their own benefit.

In MD--These people are still calling (Caller ID read: "Officer Down Fo.." )--despite the previous report this guy was just sued.  We've on the DNC call, but we still get 5-10 calls a day from #'s that others report on this website.

I too live in Maryland and have received numerous calls from this number in FL, as well as the same type of call from 2 other states.  I ignore most of these calls, but did pick up the phone (since my caller ID isn't currently working).  I asked how much of each donation actually goes to the fallen officers, and the caller hung up. Received another call from the same number 30 min later and politely declined their offer.  Asked them to not call again.  An hour later, received a call from the same number.  Will continue to ignore all out of state calls that I don't recognize.  Don't they ever learn?

Another Marylander...................got the call a few minutes ago, man called me by name and stated he was with Officer Down Foundation.  Never heard of it, as I've never heard of MOST of them that have called lately, so hung up.  Just for fun hit *69, and guess what? - call was from 727-842-7739!!  Googled foundation name & surprise, surprise - looks like these folks have been burning up the phone lines here in MD!!  Personally, I would NEVER donate based on one of these calls - I suspect 98% of them are scams, and that is quite sad, since it tars the legitimate organizations with the same brush.

NEVER give money to anyone over the phone.  Rule of thumb, I give to my favorite charities, and that's it.  And I know where to find them, they don't have to find me.

And a 10 year kid can photoshop up a website that looks official in a matter of hours, and accumulate what appears to be true stories and credentials just from surfing the web for info.  This is a new day and age people....if you don't know them, don't give to them!

Next time "Mr. Michaels" calls, tell him you KNOW about him and WHERE he lives too!!!

Got a call from this number tonight, 9 June 2010.  They asked for me for my credit card or debit card number over the phone so I could make a donation!  I was half asleep (which is why I answered in the first place) and told them to send me the information so I could check if they were a legitimate charity with tax exempt status.  Once I woke up, I checked Google and found this site.

Sounds like a scam, and now they have my address and phone number.

I'm in MD too and got a call tonight. Didn't answer thanks to caller ID.  I searched on it though and found this site and also a link to this name and address for the number:

caller ID showed a call came in today 7 June at 5:53 PM answering machine on, no message left. Called ID showed "Officer Down FO" with the number 727-842-7739 (FL area code I'm in Silver Spring, MD). I hate these calls, I get these type of "donation" calls more than I do credit collectors now. When I'm home I check the caller ID to see if I recognize the number or if it's from family/friends if I don't recognize the number, area code or the display shows one of these "organizations" I let the answering machine deal with it. 99% of the time they don't leave any message.These type of calls should be on the rules for the Do Not Call list, except they are not. The Do NOT Call list now-a-days is a joke.

These "benevolent" associations are scams.  They pretend to support law enforcement, but 1-4% of the money raised actually goes to the cause, with the rest going to "administrative" costs.  These are not endorsed by any law enforcement agencies.  ignore them!

I got a call from this number today.  Caller ID said Officer Down Fo.  I answered, said "hello," and the person hung up.  Didn't say anything at all.  

I'm on the Do Not Call list and have been for a long time, but lately I've been getting a few of the scam type of calls.

I was at work when this number called my phone  around 1:26 PM on May 25, 2010. Just like many people these days, I have caller ID too and it shows "Officer Down FO" on it, with a 727 area code. I am suspicious about this!!!!!  Con on, I live in Baltimore, MD and the area codes are 410 and 443. If a actual police officer called, I think it would be a Baltimore, MD area cade of 410 or 443, not 727 which is a Florida area code based on my search in "GOOGLE". Come on telemarketers, don't you know, people have caller ID and we check it before we answer the phone and if we see "unknown", "not available" or some so called "police officer" calling with an area code out of your area, We will not answer such calls.
We treat them as suspicious scams and I will not answer. Good day.

Seems like a lot of Marylanders are getting this call.  Funny that the are code is from FL, but caller insists he is from MD.  I'm guessing if he is calling West Virginia, he tells them he is from WV also.  F that...

I got this call last night and I was told the same thing, but he said the organization was in Baltimore, my hometown.  My caller ID said something entirely different and when I asked him again where he was calling from, he again said Baltimore. I told him that was funny because my caller ID had a 727 area code and that was New Port Richie Fla.  He hung up.  Anyone can put up a website!.

I did not answer the phone for several reasons:

727 area code is in Florida.   I live in Maryland and do not answer calls originated out of state if I do not personally know who is calling me.

Florida is a haven for many scams ..... you can easily verify this for yourself.

Maryland has local "One Hundred Clubs" that are really set up for the benefit of fallen officers and can be easily checked out through the states attorney generals office.  (The One Hundred refers to the amount that is typically pledged to support the endownment)

Finally, as the spouse of a law enforcement member, I personally believe that the name " Officer Down Foundation" is a pure sympathy play.   Ask them to send you their literature and find out what state they are registered in......if they tell you they are a marketing firm, ask them their administrative percentage that is taken before they give to the aforementioned charity.

I just got a call from them. They asked whether it was Mrs. '''' i sad yes. then they asked for money. They KNEW MY ADDRESS and my name!!!  How did they get this information??? I did not give any of this info to any charities...

Also in Maryland - got a call from this number at 4 pm today and didn't answer.  After reading everything above I'm glad I didn't.  Caller ID said "New Port Ric FL".

in Maryland....caller ID showed same info as others have....didn't answer either.....I don't give to places that solicit me!!  could be legit???  sorry, don't care, we give to local!

I'm also in MD and just got a call from them that I didn't answer -- looked at this site for comments about what others say.  Just a thought for those that think this is a organization that they would want to donate to -- call your local chapter of Fraternal Order of Police and see what they say.  Most of these  Fire and Police "Charities" operate without police or fire approval and, like another poster stated, maybe give 10 or 20% to the organization and keep the rest for themselves.

How do you know this ? What about the F.O.P,P.B.A,COPS,HEROS etc ? I think you have NO idea what you're taking about. Next time have some proof before you slander a charity !!
