I get these guys calling me regularly from various numbers; calls start coming in in spring of each year. I don't generally answer for unknown numbers, so I get calls 1-2 times  a day from them until I give in and pick up.
And every time it is the same thing; they always ask for someone I have never heard of, I tell them it's a wrong numbre and I don't kow the person, they apologize and the calls stop... for a few months. Then we start the cycle all over again. they've never been aggressive with me, but it's still annoying and eats up minutes on my phone.
I've had this same phone number nearly 15 years now, i'd like to not have to change it, but i'm just about ready to just so I never have to deal with them again.

Never answer unknown number. If it's family, friend, or otherwise important they should leave a message.

Prank Call
The 1st voicemail sounded like the parents' voice from the Peanuts (you know, wah wah wah).  2nd voicemail was a  foreign woman named Rebecca says some dribble about being with FBIs cyber crime tech division and that I or my retained attorney had better call her back ASAP, otherwise she wishes me the best of luck.  I am sorry, but I am a bit skeptical.  I had a voicemail from a foreign man saying something similar.  I don't know how these people got my phone number, but I guessing these are cyber criminals, scammers, themselves.  I mean, seriously, IF I were being examined for some alleged crime, why the F would the agency investigating call and insist I call them back?  As I recall the original message from the foreign man mentioned a required exchange of funds, otherwise I would be prosecuted to the fullest.  At the bare minimum, it is attempted blackmail, but they have nothing to blackmail me with.  I have never been arrested, only know what police stations look like from the movies and TV, and have recieved 1 traffic ticket in my entire driving career of 23 years.  Anyway, this stuff about an attorney, I'll get excited when I get served with physical papers by a legal court.

You are correct but, nobody does anything about it. I have reported Portfolio numerous times. This might be a debt from before the year 2000. I don't know for sure because they can never prove it. Now, they don't bother to leave a message. But, when I use to answer, I requested information on the debt. They never sent it so, I gave them the address for my son. Of course, they never sent it.

If they cannot prove it.............NOTHING THEY CAN DO! But, there are COLLECTION LAWS in every state. Simply call the attorney general of the state where the call came from. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HARRASS! They call all strange hours and sometimes several times a day.

Plus, they recycle old debts via the computer and make them look new. I know they have bugged people for a thirty year old debt .............NOT LEGAL!

They have several different numbers so, good luck trying to block them.

IF EVERYONE WOULD REPORT THEM TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE STATE THEY ARE LOCATED IN.........THEY WILL BE SHUT DOWN!!!!!!!

In theory yes - In reality no. If you are being called by foreign 3rd world criminals, why would they respect anything you, or the law, has to say? Remember, caller ID is easily faked & you really have no idea who you are talking to. Best answer? Do not answer, or call back numbers you do not know. Check them here, or elsewhere.

By federal law if you tell them not to call a cell phone they cannot call again. This does not by law need to be in writing.

Only a landline request to stop calling must be done in writing.

Call received from this number on 13 June 2014 at 1450 rang once, but then they hung up.  They called again at 1451 and I answered.  They identified themselves as being Portfolio Recovery Service.  I hung up on them.

Thanks to these websites for answering that infamous question.. "Who was that that called me". Now i know it was Portfolio. Guess they have my cell# now. What i dont get is how they try to collect  on a old debt that is just over 7 years from the origianlly delinquency date, and over the statue of limitation to sue. I never sent a dime over the years, so the debt never "re-newed". Would someone really pay out anything on an old debt that is not even on your report anymore? And past SOL? Why do they bother? Can they really leagally bother you for the rest of your life? Even after the reporting agency think the debt is so old it doesnt need to be on your report anymore. Crazy. Just pure crazieness.

This number called my cell, I would not normally pick up on a number I don't recognize but for some reason  I did. They disconnected as soon as I said hello. I looked up the number as I usually do when I get one that I don't recognize and found this site.

That's illegal. Call the FTC and your state's attorney general. be careful, because if it was a credit card they can sometimes just keep adding fees forever if that's how it was written. also, never acknowledge the debt. if it's not on your credit report, tell them you have no knowledge of any debt and that if they don't send you a copy of the original bill from the original creditor, they are breaking the law. don't let them intimidate you! get mad! Tell them if they don't back off and disappear, you'll be forced to physically come to their office with your lawyer, the cops, and a reporter.
