Knew who they were because of multiple calls from them and researching here. Decided to answer today. Asked for Christine and when I said they had the wrong number, they hung up. We'll see if they continue to call. I owe nothing except a student loan which I am current on so it is not mine.

They keep calling & It's for a wrong number. I have asked to be placed on their do not call list but they call anyway. They even called one day & left a message that the person they were asking for had charges filed against them & was going to be arrested later in the day if they did not call them back to find out who filed criminal charges against them.

Debt Collector
Junk debt collector - Portfolio Recovery.  They buy up old debt that has been written off and try their best to collect for pennies on the dollar.

It's a good idea to check your credit report once a year (www.annualcreditreport.com).  This site allows you to check with all three credit reporting bureaus for free. These junk debt collectors can be adding negative remarks which will lower your credit score.  You should also know your state's statute of limitations on revolving debt (typically, credit cards or any type of debt you would pay monthly). You have the ability to dispute any negative remarks they make on your credit report if the original creditor has charged off your debt, and should make these kinds of disputes should negative remarks occur.

I had a debt collector call a family member looking for me, which is strictly against the law.  When I spoke to this rude woman on the phone, I told her that what she'd done was illegal and she had the balls to tell me that she could call my family, my neighbors, my boss - anyone she felt like!  I made a complaint to the FTC (you can do this online, as well) noting the name of the company and the woman's name.  Haven't heard a word from them since.

Know your rights -- it's worth your time to do a little research about fair debt collection.  Most of these companies don't give a rat's azz about following the law because they count on consumers not being well informed.

I received a call from this number and let it go to voicemail as I didn't recognize the number.

The message they left was   "You gonna put someone over"    then hung up...

This was said in a very intimidating voice.

I saved the voicemail, looked up the number and found this site.

This is extremely inappropriate and disturbing.

Any suggestions on what I can do to report and/or stop this?

Thanks

Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc. (PRA) is ? in its own words ? ?a market leader in the consumer debt purchase and collection industry.? Founded in 1992, by 2011, Portfolio Recovery Associates spent $408 million buying debt with a total face value of $9.8 billion. That?s about $.04 on the dollar. By the end of 2011, the company employed more than 2,600 people in 10 states and had annual earnings of $100.8 million.

Portfolio Recovery Associates relies on several law firms to collect its debt in California, including Hunt & Henriques, Bleier $ Cox, and the Legal Recovery Law Offices of Mark Walsh.

At the outset of a case, PRA will typically demand 75% of the principle amount to settle. When faced with experienced debt defense counsel, however, Portfolios demands will shrink as trial approaches. Recently, for example, this office defended a $ 42,000 credit card collection lawsuit against Portfolio Recovery Associates. For over a year, Portfolio stuck to its settlement demand of $30,000 ? just under 75%. Then, a week before trial, they settled $9,600.

In this case, about six weeks before trial, we took the deposition by PRA?s witness.Fortunately, we were able to poke several holes in their case. PRA settled for 20% of the balance sought rather than bring a weakened case to trial. (A deposition is out of court testimony taken under oath before a court reporter priro to trial. Deposition testimony can be used at trial to descredit a witness.) While depositions can be expensive, in larger cases, they are necessary in preparing for trial.

These people have HUNDREDS of phone numbers, and they register new ones all the time. They will contact you over debts that are 7, 10, even twenty years old. They will even contact you about debts that have been discharged in bankruptcy court. They will call and harass your friends, family and coworkers. If you look closely at their envelopes, they say they cannot sue you over the debt. Answer the call, tell them to stop calling, and threaten them with a lawsuit if they continue.

How would you know if the so-called debt they are calling over is even valid?  My credit report was destroyed 15 years ago by ID theft and I have never been able to get any of the false information on removed, even after nearly 20 years. I now believe that the entire "credit reporting system" is a sham designed to fleece innocent people.

No, they can't get a default judgment against you if a debt is past it's statute of limitations.  If you should be served by one of these outfits with either an unjust debt or one that is past the statute, then you need to ANSWER the complaint with the court (no filing fee for an answer) and then FILE A MOTION FOR SUMMARY JUDGMENT.  There is a filing fee for a Motion, but it is generally nominal.  Make sure you SERVE your answer and your Notice of Motion and Motion on the attorney who filed the Summons and Complaint against you.  They are NOT allowed to harass you, period.

If you are seeing this phone number, then it is from Portfolio Recovery Assn. They are looking to collect a long overdue debt that you may have. If you do look at what I have posted, you will see as to what tactics they do  use. They will keep calling and calling you for no reason. I did forget to mention that sometimes, they will call and the moment that you say "hello"  they will start speaking spanish. Of course,it is no good for us,as we don't speak spanish at all.

Portfolio Recovery A**. will call you and not tell you anything till that you have identified yourself as that person that they are calling, which is one of their things to do,also they will call you at least,a few times a day as well, regardless of whether it is a work week or on a weekend (Sundays included)! It don't matter as to how many times that you do change your phone number, they will find you as they do electronic stalking, which is supposed to be illegal to be doing! Not only do I get them on my cell phone but on my house phone as well. They do use an automated dialer to call for the wrong person, they they do think that is at YOUR number, and this will happen quite a few times. There was one person that they was calling for, which we did tell them that we DID NOT KNOW him,DOES NOT LIVE WITH US,but kept calling and asking for this person, told them to contact the local county jail as we did see the person's name in the police log for being arrested! They don't really care as to who they do call,as long as they do get a response! One time, some s**t bi*** called, and I did tell her that if she was that hard up for cash, she should have her male co-worker pimp her and put her out on the streets! Maybe, she should make some extra cash that way! I was not afraid to tell them off!

They buy an old debt, run a credit report on you, and then, from that, they obtain a home, work, and cell number.  Then they proceed to call you for the rest of your life.

If the debt is beyond the SOL they CANNOT take you to court. They may try to collect, but they may not threaten or actually take legal action.

Don't send a letter this proves that you made arrangements with them and they can reopen the debt!!
Do not tell them you owe them money or even talk to them. If you want to send a letter send a letter that you don't owe the debt and to stop calling or take you to court.

Technically you have to put your request that they not call you anymore in writing for it to be valid.  I suggest sending it certified mail or via facsimile to prevent them from later denying knowledge of your request.  If they continue contacting you after doing so then you can sue them to not only have the debt wiped out but also for damages against the company itself.  Just always be sure to document everything including the times/dates of their calls and what is said in the call!  As the above poster states just follow the link to the Fair Debt Collection Protection Act (FDCPA) for your rights in this matter...
