I used to be in this industry and the mistakes that are referenced here are inexcusable, and have happened to me.     If Samuel Schmoo who used to live in Brooklyn and moved to North Carolina in 2008 owes you $3K, there is no reason why you should be calling Samantha Shmore who moved from Queens to South Carolina in 2008.  It sounds plausible but it really isn't.  You can plug a SSN into Lex-Nex - - and you can check the SSN of the person you are calling.   You should know if you're calling the right person.  But I've had this exact scenario play out and it was not funny.   My name sounds the same as the guy they were calling - and the calls came before the letter.   First someone called when I wasn't home - and freaked my GF out.   I called them back from work, spelled my name out for them, and they said my name wasn't on their list, must have been a mistake.   Then a few days later they called when I was there, and this woman had a different address and account info I did not recognize, and would not believe me when I said none of her info matched anything about me.   Then the next day a letter came, addressed to a guy with a name that was different but sounded like mine.   I was able to put two and two together then.   But visually, once you have the name, there's no reason to be calling someone else.  I honestly believe they call as many people as they can find, insist that it's your debt and try to harangue you into paying.   And the idea that someone had a card and "just forgot about it" is ridiculous.   I work in credit - some people have a ton of accounts but most people have 2-3 regular cards max, and perhaps a few rarely used store cards, and then their mortgage.   If you're legitimately late on a card or other account, someone from the company will call you - if it's 5 years later and this is the first time you're hearing that you are delinquent on an account you've never heard of, you didn't "just forget" - it's fraud.

They ask for a Barbara.  I have received six calls from them and I tell them I am not Barbara and I don't know any one named Barbara.  I have also told them not to call my number again but I guess they have a number and are going to continue to call it.

People please be smart! This is a scam. It is fraud. I called BofA and told them that I miassed a call from BofA and I gave them the number and they stated its a company who wants your private personal information AKA Phising! if you have an account with Bof A call the number from the back of the card. I am a frequent caller of BofA so when I received a call from that 757, I right away knew this was not right!

actually this is fraudulent...I do not have a Bank Of America account or even checking or savings account...I missed the phone call...I called it bank and received the message that you say however it never stated exactly as to what company it was...Immediately i knew it was fraud....f you gave them information over the phone that was a big mistake...you should never give ANY type of information over the phone....companies will send notices on how to go about paying a delinquent amount...If i was you I would check my credit now that they have your information and if you provided your social security number well thats a whole different story.

This number is legit. I just called it to check it [since they called me earlier, to help me get my past due account back to current]. I got an recorded female voice telling me "thank you for calling FIA card services, we are currently closed... if you want to make a payment, use [cannot remember website,]" .

now if I get a REAL telemarketer, that's another story.

Received a call from this number, have never had a BofA account, have never made a late payment to anyone, never had an account go to collections, or even had a banking account in the negatives.  I know every aspect of every account we own and they are all in good standing, and none are from BofA.  They also thought my husband was a Jr when he is not.  Nice try.

This isn't a scam, it's BoA Collections. That includes BofA, FIA Card Services, (former) MBNA Card Services, and many others they've bought over the years.

Nothing weird about this simple phishing trip.  If by coincidence you do actually have an account with the lender they name, you can be reasonable certain it is just that a coincidence.

Here is my experience over the past few months with this outfit.

We have received calls on a monthly basis from this scammer, asking for me by my somewhat common name and by city but with no other identifiers.  The calls are, of course a fraud.  Usually my wife is home when they call.  Tonight I was home when the call came in.

A caller with the speech patterns of a black, female mid-Atlantic regional high-school level education claiming to be "Adrian", an employee of "Bank of America," and not identifying herself as an employee of any credit or collection service, called at 5:40 MDT on Tuesday, 16 September 2008.  The caller ID reflected 757-533-7007 and "Bank of America" which is false.  (Past calls have had other numbers including 800-numbers.)  "Adrian" demanded that I make an immediate payment or "This account will be turned over to a collection service."  I notified her the call was being recorded and asked what entity of Bank of America she was employed by and she replied simply but emphatically, "Bank of America."  I asked for her address and she demanded to know why I wanted it.  "Are you going to make a payment?"  I replied, no, that I was aware, as was B of A, that she was a fraud and I wanted to know where she was and who she worked for.  She repeated, "Bank of America" and repeated her threat to turn my non existent account over to a "collection agency."  I invited her to do so and suggested we could see each other in court.  I ended the call.

I do not have any account, delinquent or otherwise, with Bank of America and telephone calls we initiated with known Bank of America offices confirmed that there is no record of an account in my name.

Just to be sure, I have checked all three of the big three credit reporting agencies and there is no record of an unauthorized or any other account with B of A on my record.  You, too can check your credit report at no cost, by using the link found on the Federal Trade Commission's website.  No, it's not the singing guy with the pirate's hat in the amusing if by now tedious commercials.  There is a link from the FTC dot gov web page.

This scammer calls just about monthly and claims the non-existent account is about to be turned over to a collection agency.  We have repeatedly asked for identification and affiliation of the caller, and each time they claim they are the "Bank of America."

We know this is merely an annoyance and there has been, in my case at least, no prosecutable violation of federal law.  Yes, they do violate the "do not call" regulation but that is not really something that will get them prosecuted, in my  experience.

The reality is they are a scam and an annoyance, but they can steal nothing from you other than your time unless you play their game.  Hang up on them.  Don't answer any questions, don't give them your address or any other information.  Don't reward their "phishing" expedition. Don't get mad or use offensive language.  Maybe laugh at them a little and hang up.  When they call again, hang up again.

Today my grandmother received a call at 9:15 am. They asked for me and she said I wasn't there. The gentlemen asked when I'd be there and she said she wouldn't tell him. He said you aren't going to tell me. She said no because I don't know. She asked what this was concerning and he wouldn't say. She told him she'd take a message and give it to me and for him to give his name and number and he said he'd call back and just hung up.

I admit I do have a BoA card and had a late payment, but they call my house number and leave messages clearly stating who they are. And the number displayed on my caller ID is the same number that called her. But when I called the number back with a blocked number (*67) I was told number was unreachable. Weird!

As far as calling my 70 year old grandmother to track me is retarded. Send me a notice in the mail or call me don't harass my family members especially my elderly ones. I guess they figure she's senile and will say anything or give any info they need.

The just called me and asked for a name I couldn't make out, they then proceeded to ask if it was some family's residence, I said no and hung up because it didn't feel right. I looked up the numbers and was directed here, I'm going to check my credit statements just in case someone else is using my identity

Just got  a call from this number, identifed itself as Bank of America.  Wanted information to even begin discussion with me, which I refuse to give over the phone.  Asked for a return call number and they gave me 866-752-9115 which is yet another unidentified number.  When I called the 757 number back, I got someone's personal  answering machine, no identification of who or what it belonged to; When calling the 866 number, it immediately states "Credit services, thank you for calling in response to our call, please enter your card number!"  Yeah, right!  If a company is really collecting, they would identify themselves by name. Sorry, but this is a scam.

Debt Collector
Called for a name that has never lived at this number. Told me to call back Shawana Richardson at 800-842-3019 x29043 as soon as possible or else they'd escalate "my" situation. Cross check that number and you'll find this is a common scam to collect SSN and credit card payments from people.

Have received three calls from this number.  First one left a message on answer machine for xxxx.  No such person lives at this residence.  Second time they called at 6:15 A.M. !!  I told the lady that there is no xxxx here -- and asked why she was calling at 6:15 in the morning.  She apologized.  Just got another call.  I explained that I had already informed the company that no xxxx lives here and furthermore their last call was at 6:15 in the morning.  The gentleman promised to remove my phone number from the record.  We'll see.

This is the 4th debt collector in a row to call, asking to talk to xxxx.  Interesting that they are not all calling simultaneously.  I get the feeling that they are selling the debt to the next collector -- and not removing my number when they do so.

Does anyone out there have any advice?

If they are calling you asking for someone in your name but the last four of the social and DOB are wrong, that just means that they're doing what's called "Skip tracing" on someone that has the same name and zip code (or near area) as you do.  They have a data base with several different agencies (magazine subscriptions, other credit cards, cable companies, satelite, cell phone, etc) where all they have to do is enter first and last name and zip code and it will give them a list of every person in that area with that same first and last name... this is why they sometimes call people that are minors or people that have no credit cards... if you have a middle name, this is usually the easiest way to get them not to call you.  Have them verify the middle name.  I hope this helps.

This is not a scam.  I have a friend that work for FIA and I know for a fact they are trying to collect on a debt.  This is most likely affecting your credit if they are calling you, so don't take them lightly.  If you have any doubt after you receive a call from them, pull your credit report and check to see if you have any open or closed accounts you had forgotten about or were unaware of and check if they're past due.

BofA/FIA/MBNA - they are all the same Credit card company.  They also service many different other Cards. Usually whenever a bank is too small to have an entire credit card unit for their customers (due to small amount of accounts), they outsource their services to another agency (usually Bank of America or Chase).  People don't realize that they're credit card isn't serviced by their actual bank, so when they fall past due and receive a call from one of these agency they get upset and think its fraud.  I'm not sure of all the banks that outsource to FIA (Formerly MBNA, and is owned by Bank of America N.A.) but I do know some of the following:

SunTrust Bank
Wachovia
Desert Schools FCU
First Bank (Puerto Rico)
And most minor Credit Unions

So, if you receive a call from this company, chances are you're either behind on your bill (just pay it up to date and the calls will stop), or you probably went to a sporting even or got a free gift bag at a theme park (universal studios is notorious for this), they opened up a credit card in your name, you forgot and when the annual fee was charged, you started accruing fees.  Just talk to them, don't give them any personal information (other than maybe your LAST FOUR of the social and DOB).

Bottom line people, be aware of all accounts you may have and pay your bills.
