These people who are calling are ridiculous and scam artists.  Don't be fooled.

The person who called me could barely speak English and said his name was James Johnson!

I could also hear other people with accents talking in the background. I am sure that it was a phone bank.

Why isn't someone shutting this number down altogether?

I then called back and asked for a badge number, unit number, and a supervisor name. I was hung up on. I am recently a victim of identity theft. How does this keep happening? I mean how many times can i change things.UNREAL!!!! Thanks for all your post. It really calmed me down.  AND IF YOU ARE READING THESE POSTS! ALL OF US ARE SMARTER THEN YOU THINK. They called my aunt in Maryland on her job and it really scared her to death. She then called me so that she could talk to my mother to get the money. When my mother callled her back she told her thought it was a scam so I then did some research of my own and come to find out they call ppl all over the Eastern coast. The gentleman who I spoke with, he claimed his name was "Gary Thomas" and to be quite honest they had heavy foreign accents so that tells me his name is nowhere near an American name. Please be careful of tbis IT IS A SCAM!!!!

Just got the same call at my place of employment and two calls on my cell phone.  Obviously this is a big scam.  I knew that they couldn't arrest me or anything like that, so he said "What are you going to do?" After he had explained my "options" to me, I told him to send the cops!  Stupid people.

Someone by the name of Patrick Jones (with an accent) from the above # contacted me at work, cell and home and said that he had my social security # as owing money to Pay Day Cash.  I DO NOT owe money to any pay day loan company and was very upset about receiving this call (mainly at my place of employment). I felt suspicious about the call and decided to do a google search on this phone # and reports say that it is a scam.

These guys called my mother and said that I needed to call them back ASAP regarding imporatnt legal matters.  I called them back and ascked for the extension, which was 5525(probably made up) and was told he will call me back.

The guy called me back, sounded like the first, and proceeded to tell me that I a lawsuit with my SSN was about to go to county court for Theft By Deception and 2 other counts and I could make it go away if I paid them $320.  He said I took a payday loan from Payday Cash or something and that I never paid it back.  What a croc.  I told him that I had documentation that backed up I never recieved anything like that and that whatever type of scam he was running to go someplace else.

He hung up on me.  I called back and asked for the same extension, gave the guy my name and he hung up on me again.

They called me yesterday and today, left three messages and when I asked them what it was about they said a law suit. What he did not know was that i was typing in his phone number as he was talking and saw the posting that this was a scam and plainly stated to him that he was a scam artist and to not call me again. I love how they have an accent and the number is local, but they cannot tell you what the law suit is about or what state they are calling from.

Received a similar call today at my place of employment saying I had applied for a payday loan and owed money for a payment never made.  When I asked for paperwork, I was told that it was emailed to me and bounced back.  They offered me a settlement but could not tell me the name of the company, a phone number, the alleged amount or when the payment was made to me citing a conflict of interest. But, that if I didn't pay I would have to go to court and would be locked up after the paperwork was submitted.

I asked for a contact number and name.  I work at a law firm and told them it's illegal to attempt to scam someone out of money.  He hung up on me.  I've tried number several times, it goes directly to voicemail.

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

This is a continuation from my earlier reply but to comment on Katrina's comment.  The guy I talked to said his name was Steve Glock or Clark.  Funny American name for a foreigner I thought also.  They could have at least get rid of their accent or pick an authentic name to match their accent. LOL  The number also came up as unavailable on my phone, which wouldn't happen unless your hiding.

May 14, 2010

This just happened to me tonight.  Somehow they got my personal information and called a couple of friends of mine that I have as references and told them to give me a message and proceeded to tell them that it was a legal matter and if I didn't call back within 2 hours then they would send the police to my house. First of all, they are not allowed to tell anyone other than the person that holds the account anything like that.  I called the number and some foreign guy answered but did not state the company name, which is odd when answering a business phone, asked for my number to have the guy call me back. The other guy called me back, who was foreign also and very hard to understand, and when I asked them what company he was calling from he said the Virginia Dept. of Crime Prevention.  Then he proceeded to tell me that I was defrauding a payday loan company of a loan that I took out and never re-payed. The amount was odd, like $789, he said I could settle it on the phone or take it to court.  I told him that Dept. of Crime PREVENTION would not be making collection calls for companies nor asking to have the amount paid over the phone to THEM.  I told him that I took no such loan out and I want to know where this company resides, when the loan was taken out, how this loan was given and why I never received any phone calls, voice mails or letters in the mail stating this.  He didn't say anything so I said "well, if you're with the dept of crime prevention then you should be trying to help me find out who apparently is using my identity".  All he could say was do you want to settle this on the phone or in the courts. Finally I said, "if you're not going to help me get to the bottom of this then I am contacting the attorney general's office and the FBI because this is identity fraud against me.  He just sat there.  I said "maybe your a fraud, that's why you aren't responding".  Then I said "I don't think there's anything more for us to talk about because I have phone calls to the attorney general and FBI to make" and I hung up on him.  I looked up VA Dept. of Crime Prevention and this is NOT there number. This number is out of Williamsburg, VA and is a land line.  I was starting to think that the state of VA only has foreigners in there government offices since that's all that I talked to, so we know this was a fraud.

I'm a Florida Police Officer and these idiots called my home number and attempted this scam on my husband.  He's not a LEO, and it freaked him out.  I laughed when he told me.  A few days later, they left 6 nasty and threatening messages on my voice mail.  I called them back and advised them that it was against Florida Law to harass and threaten to itimidate.  They asked for my name and I gave them "Emily Smithe"....LOL gave them a taste of their own medicine.  Stated they were with the "Dept. of Crime Prevention" and were enforcing legal laws.  I advised them, no paperwork, no money....the guy (whom you can't understand) says "who do you work for" and repeated "what do you do".  So I told them I was a LEO and the guy said "so" and hung up.  Never laughed so hard.  Don't fall for this.  These are only civil matters if they were legit.  Since they aren't DO NOT give them any information.

Someone named "Gary Thompson" from this number called my work today and left a message. When I called back I had to go through 4 different people that didn't even know my name. I could not understand a word they said. He said I owed money and if I didn't pay in 24 hours I was going to be arrested. After speaking with my attorney I will be calling them back to get some information to stop this! This is not real and they are not a legitimate company! Do not give them any information!!!! They said they were a part the the Department of Crime Prevention!
