I got a call from them. My caller ID said Portfolio Recovery but the lady left a message saying the name of the company is Core Processing. The number she called from is 757-961-9977. They call all day every day. The lady's name was LaToya Hayes.

They gave me a call today looking for my father they gave me his exact name and asked if he was here with me, I replied no and asked who am I speaking with and the didn't answer; I also said if they'd like to leave a message but they hung up on me. Should I be concerned?

The answer is not to ignore them but to give them a taste of their own method. Call them back not just once but as many times as you can. First set you phone to outgoing ID block then have at them allowing 50 seconds of silence and then redial. One person can tie a line and create confusion and if several people do it you force them to reconsider their approach. If you are being called more  once a day or more fight back. This is the only counter measure that works.

In the Mini-Miranda they are supposed to say that they are trying to collect a debt otherwise it illegal, but it hard to sue them for they move around like mice......

wow lol fighting over some debt collection agency - not only is it professional but legal to state Hello my name is and I'm calling from this agency ... but it's also illegal to state anything more than I need to speak to whom, and then that's it. There is absolutely no information being shared. Privacy Act law is being enforced. Anyone calls your home and refuses to give their name & company name can be considered a harassing call and the Police can be notified. Call the precinct if you need confirmation, and yes laws differ from state to state, but not harassment calls. Even debt collection "businesses" know the rules. They must state name & company and whom they want to speak with, but nothing further than that. Then you can sue them if they do. Eyes must have opened up for that lol.

The problem with bottom feeding companies like Portfolio is that a debtor never owed them anything--it's typically debt that they bought for pennies and are trying to scare someone into paying.  They frequently behave in unethical and illegal ways, such as calling throughout the day repeatedly, calling after hours, and attempting to collect on a debt that cannot no longer legally be collected, as it's passed the statute of limitations.  They're truly the scum of the earth.

Actually, you are allowed to block them. If you are the consumer they are after, you have the right to request all communication be done by mail as long as you give them your valid address. Once you have done that, in writing, you can block them from your phone. If you arent the person they are looking for, you do not have to request anything. Tell them not to call and then block the number.

It is illegal for a debt collector to give out information regarding the debt to anyone except the debtor, unless you give them permission. However, it is not illegal for the debt collector to say I am from such and such company.  Also, they need to ask to speak to the person they are looking for. They just cant call you and ask who you are.

I received a call from this number and have no idea what it is about.  I can not answer calls at work.  Send a letter if there is an issue.

Saw the # on my phone from Virginia, USA.  I don't answer calls from people I don't know so I didn't pick it up figuring if it was important they would leave a message.  They didn't I looked up on here to see who was calling, and I have had run ins with Portfolio before they are a really nasty collection agency.  They try to collect on bills that are way out of the statue of limitations for any state and most bills are over the federal limitation of 7 years.  They don't like it when I refer them to my "attorney" (family friend) who "handles" all financial issues.  Funny he never hears from them!

I got a call from this number.. as far as I know, I have no outstanding debt that would be with a collector.. my question is why, if this is a legt call.. why won't they leave me a message. I do not answer unknown calls or calls from numbers I don't known on my cell.. my cell is not the number I give out for random people to contact me on.. I totally take things like this out of the hands of these people.. go to my cell co. website..and block this and any other odd number... after a month..no worries.. they have almost always stopped.

That's easy for someone to say who works for them. This number called me and I've never had debt in my life. Never had a credit card in my life, either. This has scam written all over it. If it was legitimate, a message would be left with return information. It is illegal to call from any "debt collection agency" without providing valid credentials and contact information. Don't defend your own scam.

missed call on my Daughters cell phone! on 6/17/2013 at 7:26pm  this has been while since they called her. the last time the threaten her! saying she owed money.

This number called my phone and wouldn't identify themselves.

They are doing the same thing to me. I settled a credit card 13 years ago and they are calling me again. I lost documentation when I lost entire home in flooding of 2006. They even call my elderly mother and tell her I have bounced checks and they are a lawyer or the one time they stated they were a police investigator. She was crying when she called me.

How do I make them stop.

I have now started getting automated calls that sate if I do not contact them in 24 hrs the district attorney from they county is stated wrong from automation. I have ignored them but they scare my mother who thinks I am going to jail.

I know my credit is good because I bought a house a year ago.

I do not want a call from this number!

I keep getting calls from these geniuses.

They called wanting me to settle with them for a lesser amount on a Southwestern Bell phone bill.  The last possible time I could have had a bill with them would be 2000.  The company ceased to exist in 2007. I just told them I did not have such a bill and that they could mail me the bill if they feel I am in error.  I did not provide them a mailing address.

I have received many calls from 757-961-3544 and do reject when this call comes in.

also 3rd party collection is not allowed to leave a voicemail on someones phone is the vm does not state the rpc full name, and also even if the vm does state rpc full name 3rd party cannot disclose info of to what the debt is about they can only say "this is (so and so) from (company) the law requires that we notify you that this is a attempt to collect a debt please call us back at (number) and ref id number once again the number is (number) thank you.

it depends on if there in 1rst or 3rd party collections.1rst party collections dont care they will harrass you and harass you, they will threaten you an say they are attorneys when there not. 1rst party does not usually follow fdcpa rules at all they are not as bound and tied to fdcpa as 1rst party. 1rst party dont use disclosures either, if you tell 1rst party stop calling they wont, until you actually get a lawyer. 3rd party collection is more bound to fdcpa laws, certain companies do follow fdcpa such as disclosures of "this call may be monitored and recorded" also " this is an attempt to collect a debt and any information will be used for that purpose, this is a communication from a debt collector". some companies who do 3rd party cant disclose anything until they have verifed first and last name and address, then they have to say the disclosures. if a consumer asks who is calling you can tell them your name, then verify info of right party contact (rpc) if they want to know the company in 3rd party collections and they ask you can tell them your company name. then verify rpc info. in 3rd party collections that do follow fdcpa to the T if a person says dont call me no more then they have to stop calling, if a rpc says i have a attorney even if they really dont in 3rd party you must stop calling them, if in 3rd party somoene says you are harrassing them you must not proceed and quit calling them. but each company in 3rd party is different

I have a pretty long list of numbers.  At lest one posting on this phone number had a pretty good list that had a small few numbers I didn't have.so they were added   I found out that there is limit on the amount of data that you can store in a single Google Contact.  I had to break this list up into multiple contacts.  I named them "Survey", "Survey 2", and so on, that way anyone else looking at your phone log will be none the wiser.  I also have the phone ringer set to go right to voice-mail.
