This guy texted me too, He's a scammer.  But buying a car in another state isn't weird at all unless you leave 500 miles away from state lines.  I grew up 10 minutes away from a state line and now live less than an hour for one.  For a car I will probably use more than 7 years a few hours drive, heck even an 8 hour drive would be no problem.  Definitely worth it to get the right car.

same thing listed ad in local paper that goes to cars.com and immediately at 200am got a text message from number 765-251-8793 saying would buy car sight unseen. ignored it and got another the next night same thing. - too good to be true so I sent a message saying not trusting pick up the phone and call then sent me an email to send message too. I did and this is what I got back. Person should be ashamed to be saying they are a member of the service. Cars.com should follow up on this person. SCAM SCAM SCAM

I got your response. Well, I have read through your ad and from what I have seen,it is priced favorably compared to others so I want you to consider it sold to me because I am ready to buy it for the asking price.I am Tech Sgt Erika Lindquist currently on duty serving the country. Presently I am out of town on duty in a remote area until November 10. We have a bad and fluctuating network here otherwise I would have called you and seal the deal on phone. At the moment, email and text messages works best for me.Nevertheless,I am ready to seal the deal right away and pay you via my PayPal account that is attached to my bank account as it is the only secure form of payment that I have access to right now. So,kindly get back to me with your FULL NAME AND PAYPAL EMAIL ADDRESS so that I can initiate the payment immediately. If you don't have a paypal account, it is absolutely free to set one up, kindly visit www.paypal.com. A shipper will be hired that will come for the pick up upon the completion of the payment aspect of the transaction.Let me have the requested details to proceed with the payment if we have a deal.  TY

Sincerely,

Erika

Currently going thru the same thing. I listed a car on Cars.com and received a text from (626) 600-6172 asking me to email priceslesstreasure@gmail.com he wanted to give me $1000 as a down payment to hold the vehicle and then have an "agent" come inspect it and then I was to pay the inspector with the extra funds --- then later that night I got another text from (765) 251-8793 saying that he wanted to purchase the car for his wife and that he was to busy with work and he would just pay via PayPal. It's an obvious scam and some of the wording they use gives it away.. like the first text he kept calling the vehicle a "unit" and was asking questions that I had in my ad. It's sad that things like this go on, but thankful that there are sites like these to help people figure out that they might be getting scammed...

NEVER accept PayPal for a Craigslist transaction!

You will have NO protection against a chargeback, as you will not be able to prove delivery.

They will have your stuff and you will have NO money. If the buyer files a chargeback, it WILL be granted by PayPal, as you will not be able to prove you gave anyone anything!

Yes...this is the same thing which happened to me after placing a new add in cars.com...same story...same telephone number 765-251-8793...insisted on PayPal for the transaction, which we don't do because it charges the seller a percentage fee.  Then I got suspicious after being told he lived in AZ and just wanted to buy the car sight unseen, so I entered the telephone number into google and saw this forum...Nice!

Here is how the "PayPal Scam" works:

Says they will buy the item and will pay extra to cover charges by his shipping agent.
Says he will PayPal the funds and instruct you to send the extra money via wire transfer or pre-paid card to the agent.
He then sends you a fake PayPal deposit notice email, spoofing the official PayPal notice, that says the money has been put into your account.
You, thinking PayPal has your money, go ahead with the wire/prepaid transfer to the shipping agent, who is really the scammer.
After that, you then find out there was no money transferred to PayPal and are out the money your wired.

Here is how a "Craigslist Scam" or any other "I will send you a check for more than you asked" scam works:

He pays for the item + extra funds to cover his shipping agent costs with a bank draft or cashiers check.
He sends you a check, tells you to cash it and send the extra money to his shipping agent via wire transfer or prepaid card.
You cash/deposit check and wire/prepaid the funds to the agent.
Later, the check bounces as it was counterfeit. The money you sent to the agent, who is really the scammer, is unrecoverable due to it being wire transferred/prepaid card.
You are out money and now run the risk of being arrested for passing a counterfeit check.

Posted a car ad on cars.com last night and received a text from 765-251-8793 at 5:30am the next morning.  Seemed legit at first, but quickly turned suspect when he insisted on using paypal to complete the transaction.  He wanted to buy the car for his wife, but was too busy at work to come and see it.  Oh, and he lives in AZ and would arrange for a shipping agent to pick it up.  Really?!!  Seller beware.

Glad I found this forum...thanks everyone for sharing your experience.

Craigslist & Kijiji are not eBay. No reason to take Paypal, or checks. They were designed to be local only, in person, with cash. Putting that, and NO text msg. will get rid of 99.9% of the scammers. Who buys a car in another State?

He now claims he's an "oceanist" with no access to cash. Apparently he can pay me $12k but can't get his shipper $800. His shipper is supposed to come from Michigan to Indianapolis to get the car. Not sure why an "oceanist" would need to buy my used car so desperately.
