Received the same caller claiming to be a IRS caller and was going to arrest me in 45 minutes. After checking the internet for phone ID I see they weren't the IRS and wanted to scam me money. I call the police and they know about the scam and told me don't give them any money. Again the internet saves my family of a lot of grief. Thank you for the comments. God Bless!

Got a call from a guy speaking in broken English in what sounded like a boiler room from 773 number on June 17. ID'd himself as Officer Ben McCrae or something similar. Than just a few minutes ago, on June 19, got a call from a 202 number in a woman's voice demanding I call he back on a tax problem similar to the 773 spiel. This one sounded more sophistacted. the elderly or people new to America, could be at risk.

Got a call from a guy speaking in broken English in what sounded like a bolier room, sounded like Officer Ben McCrae, on Tuesday June 17. Pretty obvious scam but one that could find victims among the elderly or unsophisticated.

Prank Call
They called me at home. Asked to speak but got my middle name very right. I got a call from home and it was on the answering machine. After listening, I called back. The woman who answered had a non-American accent. Officer Ben McCoy's accent was almost unintelligible.
He wanted my fax number and the name of my attorney saying there were serious allegations from the IRS. I asked what the allegations were. He demanded if my attorney was present. I asked to speak to his supervisor. He said that his supervisor was out.
I finally asked him to put me on his no call list and he said OK. Hung up.

Prank Call
Got a call from one of these fake "IRS" agents.  He started with the same fraud fake story and asked me for my attorney's name and phone number, lol.  So I played along and pretended I didn't have an attorney.  Knowing that fact, he tried to scare me about tax fraud and how I was in trouble.  He also knew my mailing address and stated that they had mailed many notices to me.

I said fine, let me know where you are located and I can come and talk to you in person.  He said he was in Dectaur, IL at which point I said why would the IRS be callinng me from another state and his response was IRS is headquartered there in Illinois.  Now that's a first, I told him no IRS is HQ'd in Washington, DC and he insisted that his particular department was HQ'd in Illinois.  When I started questioning him, he transferred me to his 'supervisor' who was another character.

Realizing that I was playing along or I was plain dumb, the 'supervisor' informed me that he had talked to the police and they were on their way to arrest me, hahahaha.  And then he hung up.

I hope these Indian guys stop bothering me and other normal people.  Threats of arrest and fines may work in India but not here.  Stupid crooks.

This is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service.  He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.

You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .

This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India.  There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.

MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada.  In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .
So it doesn't take long to turn a profit, even if only 0.1% of the people they call are stupid enough to believe the scammers.

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  This is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks.  YMAX Corp. is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html

Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint.

Prank Call
My husband got a call today from probably the same guy as identified in the above posts; he said he was from the IRS, and threatened my husband with immediate arrest, huge fine, five years in prison, etc., for tax fraud. We were frightened at first but got very suspicious as soon as the guy said the whole issue could be solved by my husband paying $2000-some via a government bond. Once he gave his number (773-747-8709), I googled it and came up with this page, so we hung up on him. Thank you to everyone who made the previous posts - I was so relieved to see that this was a hoax!

"Officer Albert Whorton" or something like that. Very hard to understand. Exact same as above. Left message on my phone. Knew my name and how to pronounce it. Yes, I have a foreign name. Same guy called me about six months ago, scared me. I called the number back but after the same person who left the message answered the phone, I just hung up. I tried to report to police but there is nothing they can do

My girlfriend and her family are immigrants who don't speak much English and almost just fell for this very same "Ben McCoy" scam about 5 minutes ago, from #773-747-8709.

Thankfully, I knew the whole setup was fishy and did some quick Google searching to show her this page. Many thanks to the inventors of the Internet for this reason... and the rest of you guys.

I received a call from this number and the person name is Pen McCoy and he claimed that he is calling from the crime section of the IRS and accused me of errors on my tax return and that I will be arrested in 45 minutes. He said the only way to stop the arrest is by getting $1989.36 from the bank and transfer them into a voucher from CVS pharmacy and pay it the same day in a nearby Tax office to cancel the arrest. He asked me to stay with him on the line all the time. In the pharmacy the lady at the cashier told me that this is a scam and took the phone from me and told him that she is my Lawyer. Then he hanged up the line immediately.
