I have no idea who 1780 248 1594 is or why they called. Nail them.

I did not answer this call. Grateful that others have posted information about who this is. The UofA is my employer and this irritates me to no end. Not sure how they got my cell number. I want the solicitation to stop.

Yes it is U of A.
No they never go away.
They have called for decades, I've never given anything, they still call.
Wish they'd go away.
BTW, UofA does not give a great education.

I want to let you know that calls from this number ARE legitimate calls from the University of Alberta student calling program. We employ student callers to reach out to alumni and update their information, keep them apprised of activities at their alma mater, and to solicit support. Donations may be made via credit card over the phone, or online at www.giving.ualberta.ca, or more information may be requested and sent.

You can confirm the authenticity of this post by contacting me at daro@ualberta.ca. You can also let me know your contact preferences at that email, or let me know if you have any other questions.

There's a very strong probability this is a scam number. The UofA numbers all look a certain way, and this isn't that. Plus they called me at a very odd time at night on a Sunday.

I'm not affliated with the university, but I have friends who work there.  The reason the number is not from a 492 prefix is because about 10 or more years ago, the university allowed the function of donation calls to be done off of school grounds, largely because the jobs were filled by students, and because the best time to make these calls are evenings and weekends, so rather than pay for operating a call centre, the school allows these students, as agents, to call from an offsite space or else for many students, they can use their phones at home, which are connected through the offsite office.

I've had several friends work as callers, so I know this through them.  I've had calls from this number before, and spoken with the student.  If you want to confirm that your donation goes to the school, you can ask to be contacted by a supervisor, and you can ask for a receipt to be produced and sent to you via email, mail or fax.

I  have been getting a lot of calls from this number and finally I was able to answer to talk to the person. They asked some very general questions about my program and what I do now for work and then they wanted me to donate to the FIRST fund. They confirmed my address which is my new address that I was NOT at when I went to the U Of A and they got my email wrong. I asked if I could donate in person to the faculty. They said yes but became very pushy to have me donate over the phone. I said I would rather donate in person as I did not feel comfortable donating over the phone.  The line then went dead. Seems sketchy! If you want to donate to the U Of A each faculty has a page where you can make a donation for particular bursaries. I would suggest doing that or go in person to make a donation.

Yep. They are from U of A. They are asking for donations. I even got a letter signed be our prez Samarasekera regarding the donation recently. Both the call and the letter are legit but I don't like getting calls requesting to donate. It puts me off honestly.

Prank Call
Just got a call from this number stating that they are fundraising for the U of A.  When I told them we don't make donations over the phone, they said "why don't you want to support your former University".  I told them we don't do donations over the phone...they said they would send me a donation flier if I confirmed some information first.  I told them not interested...he was very pushy and didn't speak English well.  When I told them we are really not interested...he said "what-ever" and abruptly hung up.

This was Sunday evening around 6:15 pm.  We get these calls about 2-3 times per month and they don't leave a message.  They don't take you off of their list when you ask them to.  Very annoying.

Wow! Too bad for you - thank you for posting, so we all know it's a scam. Strangely my call display even showed up as University of Alberta! I guess they're re-routing the calls somehow!?

Just called here saying they were just updating information for the University of Alberta. Told them I never went there, goodbye & hung up.
Glad to hear they're not the U of A. I don't donate to phone solicitors any how.

The U of A ran out of 492- numbers a few years ago. 248 is definitely a U of A prefix.

All University of Alberta phone numbers start with 780-492. This 780-248-1594 number is displaying false information.

Yeah, it's a scam.  They hang up immediately after getting your card info.  They didn't have my updated address so I don't think they have access to Beartracks, which is nice to know I guess.

Got a call from this number at 7pm on a Sunday confirming my address and email address. They asked a few vague questions about medical school admissions, I asked if they were doing research for the same and they gave me a very vague answer. When they asked for money I said no and they promptly ended the conversation. I am reporting this person to the U of A medical school and the Edmonton police. You should phone the Edmonton Police Service if you get a call from this guy. And don't give him your financial info!

I got a similar call claiming to be the UofA and asking for donation after they confirmed if my information was correct. In some how they have my current address and the email that I proportioned to the University when I conclude my studies there. Everything was fine until they mentioned that I can donate money by phone giving my credit card number. Since then seems weird the call for me. Anyway I will not never give my credit card number to people that claim part of some institution and asking money by phone...I think that this kind of calling are fraud all the time.

I got a call from this number last night claiming to be the U of A. They call me occasionally throughout the year and ask for donations. I've never given them a donation until now. The caller literally hung up after I gave him my credit card info. Tonight I received an email from Wells Fargo saying they were reviewing my application for a home loan...

I'm currently contacting the credit unions and my bank to let them know that someone with my personal information has stolen my credit card number. Watch out guys, if you want to donate to the U of A, you can contact them directly. This number is not listed anywhere on the U of A site.
