It is funny that a Hythe number is being used.  It is a sleepy little village.  I don't even think that the address given exists.  My bet is a forwarded number.

Complaints from people regarding the phone number 780 ? 356 ? 3646 commence here in September 2011 and continue on through to May 2012. In this day and age of heightened surveillance and high-tech security, how is it that someone utilizing the same phone number and attempting to pull off the same scam for more than six months, can't be caught? Do any of our so-called "watchdog agencies" even care?

The fact that these type of phone calls are proliferating so rapidly shows that little is being done to mitigate the crime. A recording at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre instructs the complainant to contact their local police, though a representative at the Centre ( formerly called Phone Busters) told me the police will only act upon a crime that has been committed or if there is property loss.

That is total B.S. because there is an obvious intent to commit a crime, and that should be enough for the police to act upon. If the police observe someone acting suspiciously, do they not immediately question the suspect to ensure nothing unlawful is being perpetrated, or do they wait until an actual crime has been committed? If I call the police and tell them that someone is walking up and down my street appearing to be casing homes, are they going to wait until a property is trespassed upon or broken into before they respond?

When the police set up a roadblock and stop you for questioning, have they not already concluded that you MIGHT have committed a crime, even though no intent has been demonstrated? And by doing so, have the police not violated your constitutional right to the "presumption of innocence?" Why should known fraud-artists not be treated with at least the same level of scrutiny?

No doubt people have already been defrauded by these tele-scammers, with many likely being the aging and infirm. Regardless of what law enforcement deems as "intent", the fact is crimes ARE being committed. If the police aren't following up on them, they are in dereliction of their duty to uphold the law.

It took me over two hours on the phone the other day to finally find the proper number to report this type of scam, largely due to a comedy of errors provided by the MasterCard Co. ( yes, the real one).

In Canada, these are the contact numbers you need to call:

Canadian Anti?Fraud Call Centre

Toll-free: 1-888-495-8501
Overseas and local: 1-705-495-8501
Toll-free fax: 1-888-654-9426
E-mail: info@antifraudcentre.ca

Call your local phone company and inquire what they're doing about criminals fraudulently utilizing their telecommunications system. If they try and pass the buck elsewhere, ask them what they would do if you were the one making phone calls claiming to be a credit card company while attempting to extort confidential banking information from telephone company subscribers.

Contact your local MP and inquire whether they are aware of this criminal activity, and what, if anything, is being done to prevent it and apprehend the guilty parties.

Don't let the city's finest off the hook either. Give the police a list of numbers with pages printed off from 800 Notes or other sites that host complaints about phone fraud. Record personal phone messages or whatever else you think might provide evidence that someone is intending on defrauding you or already has. Remember that your hard-earned tax dollars are going towards paying these public servants to act on your behalf. If they're not in the business to "serve and protect" you, who is it they're actually serving?

Coincidentally, as I finished typing this, I received a phone call from 519 ? 900 ? 0475. When I answered, the woman caller asked if they were speaking to the man of the house. I responded by saying they were speaking to the police. They said sorry and quickly hung up. I'll be surprised if I receive another phone call from the same number.

What city are you located in?  What did the police say?  Was it the RCMP?  Are these calls truly being spoofed, or are they coming from out of Canada?  What is their goal of the calls and what type of information are they looking for?  I just keep getting hang up calls and they never leave a message.  Why did they start giving you death threats?  Is it the same person calling all the time? Do you expect them to get caught? If the police catch them do you expect to be notified?

I'm in Ontario and keep getting this number too. When I pick it up there is a pause which tells me it's a computer generated call so I hang up right away.

Call from this number at 9:44 AM, (EDT) today, April 23. By the  time I got to the phone my answering machine kicked in as I answered, wonder of wonders no one there.
The DO NOT CALL list I feel is a cam that the telemarketers put out to gain our numbers.
May their dialing fingers get severe cramps everytime they try to dial any number.

They are using the link2voip.com service... it's a Panama bases company. Thanks to VoIP they can be anywhere in the world and set their ATA to show any name or number on your caller ID. There is no way to stop this... however link2voip.com is shutting down at the end of may due to costs... so they might be gone for a while as only link2voip.com allowed these kinds of crooks to use their service... they just wanted money.

had the # on my call display, i try to call it back and it is not in service. if others have taken this call and it indicates "become debt free" then i doubt it is a scam but in fact a feeble effort by a debt settlment company to make $$ in fees charged to settle your collection debts. i would NOT recomend using these companies. it will ruin your credit - go and see a trustee for help if you're at that point. they can settle your debts to avoid bankruptcy if thats what your situation calls for.

Just got a call from this slimey group of telemarketers.  On a level of humanity they rank lower than prime mortal ooze that first encompassed the earth.

I answered the call, and was very polite, even addressing the lady caller as ma'am.  So we started out with her little speal about reducing my credit card rate.  She asked me for my credit card number(s), and at first I  played relucant, she then assured me they were confidential.  So I started by telling her I 4 credit cards 1 Visa's, 2 Mastercard and 1 American Express. She said go ahead and tell her the numbers, so I did, first the Visa, then the mastercards and finally the American Express.  As she entered the numbers she kept asking me if I was sure I had given her the right numbers.  I of course said yes, they were the right card numbers.  She then started screaming at me in some langauge I didn't understand, it seemed that the card numbers had triggered all kind of flags and she was getting messages on her screen about fraudulent use of cards, police being informed, etc.

That is what happens when you supply card numbers from the hotsheet of stolen credit cards.  They react fast.    So, any way I wished the cursing woman a nice day and hung up.

I just got the same call - but it came up as "long distance" not Mildred.  Guess Mildred knows her name is out there!   I never answer if there is no name or I don't know the caller or the number - drives my friends with unlisted numbers crazy - but there are far too many of these scams out there - I know - I get all their calls!  arghhh!!   I'm grateful to have the new Panasonic telephone, the call block right in the phone blocks everything - it's better than the one through the telephone provider (who I believe by the way.... is one the the folks selling our phone numbers....

My cell phone blocks 'em too!    Keep blocken'em folks - because the Do not call list is a piece of garbage.  I've been on it from day one and I get 4 or 5 of these kind of calls daily!!

First such call.  Not surprised, just horrified, to read the history of this caller here.  The dark side of free enterprise, and a MAJOR nuisance to us all.  Love KJ's April 4/12 wish for them!

The DNC list is just that, a list. Businesses can invest in software that use the DNC list to remove our numbers from their autocallers. Small business most likely can't afford the technology and don't really have any way to use the DNC list. They should remove you from their list when asked and you shouldn't get any more calls from them. Scammers are scammers and NOTHING is going to stop them from calling.

Sick and tired of these calls.  I'm a senior. It takes me a while to get to the phone and process information (after a stroke).  In my former life I would have said they should be shot and p*&&^% on.
