I got this call about 20minutes after buying a Gas Range online from Sears. She never asked me what my account info was, or any kind of number, she wanted to make sure that it was in fact me who made the purchase. After calling my bank to verify it, this is a LEGIT number!! They really are on top of things!!

So if you get a call from this number ... Answer it!!

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

They called me too. I didn't answer. After listening to the message, I checked my account, looked normal. Then looked up the phone number, which brought me here. I am not even going to try to call them back. I'm going to go to my bank tomorrow and play the message for them. Hopefully they will assure me that I will stay protected.

I got suspicious when they left me a voicemail about my citizens card having suspicious activity on it. I decided to call the number on the back of my card and the guy told me that many people have been calling about this number and that it is a scam. Don't call them back!!!

I just received the same call.  Regarding a card that I lost months ago. When I said I no longer had the card and asked who it was again, the call hung up.  As it happens, I work for the institution that they supposedly called me from.

I did the same thing. When I got the message from 781-655-2000, I called my Citizen's Bank Branch. They verified the hold on my card and referred me to 888-910-2500. Someone was trying to use my card. This number is legit.

I got a call from this number this morning and didnt answer bc I get a lot of strange numbers that call. Then my phone said I had a voicemail, so I called to see what/who it was. It was a girl calling for my boyfriend and said it was concerning a debit card purchase and that we needed to call back bc his card was put on a temp status. I looked up the number on hear and saw some saying its a scam and others saying its legit from citizens bank. So I waited til the bank opened at 10 and called. I spoke to a teller I know about our account verified recent purchases and everything was fine with the posted transactions, but she then checked his card and saw it was put on a temp status for some reason, so she gave me the number 1-888-910-2500 for my boyfriend to call, we called the number and it was a citizens bank fraud division thing and the girl asked if we had made a purchase on apple online- we hadnt. She told us his card number had been compromised, will be canceled, and sent a new one. This happened with my card as well about a month or so ago but I found out at the bank before I even got a call about - someone tried using my card number for a paypal transaction listed to texas. So always verify with your bank before giving out any info, some are scammers but some are stopping scammers

This is a total scam so don't fall for it. They are social engineering scammers who have a small bit of your personal information, but they're phishing for more information. They hack the CallerID to make the call look as legitimate as possible. They even search message boards like this trying to legitimize their phony scam. That is why you see posts that negate the honest people declaring it a scam. Get a life you lousy scammers!

781-655-2000 is Citizens Bank Fraud Alert unit. I verified it after receiving a call from that number. Don't ignore calls from them. If they called you it's because they noticed suspicious activity on your card. If you don't want to give the caller you birth date, etc. then tell them so and then immediately call the number on the back of your ATM card. they probably will tell you that you had been called, and then you can get details about the suspicious card activity.

This is a perfectly valid number for the CharterOne Fraud Alert, also. I verified with the bank by using the phone number on the back of my card. This is a phone call you want to return....

Got a call from this number, identified as 'CFG' on the caller ID, and was told my account was compromised and now locked. Called the number back and got 'retirement services' voice mail, and got a little worried. Called the customer service number on the back of my card, and verified what I was told... If you get a call from this number and feel uncomfortable speaking with them, I suggest you end the call politely and try calling the number on the back of your card to verify.

This number is legit.  They called in on 781-655-2000. I didn't answer and they left 888-910-2500 to call back.  Be prepared that they ask for your credit card number.

I had cc fraud on my card from Australia.  If you are still not sure of calling them back at that number, pull out your bank statement for the account and call the number on that sheet.  They will verify.

They called me about my ex's card (who hasn't lived here in 7yrs - I kept the house and phone), and I was deeply suspicious, particularly after reading these posts.   Still, I relayed the info anyway but said to call the number on the back of her card, whatever that was.   Apparently someone 500mi away had run up $500 on it.
