?One-ring? cell phone scam can ding your wallet

February 10, 2014 by Colleen Tressler Consumer Education Specialist

Who?s calling now? That number doesn?t ring a bell. Hold the phone, says the Federal Trade Commission. You could be a potential victim of the growing "one-ring? cell phone scam.

Here?s how it works: Scammers are using auto-dialers to call cell phone numbers across the country. Scammers let the phone ring once ? just enough for a missed call message to pop up.

The scammers hope you?ll call back, either because you believe a legitimate call was cut off, or you will be curious about who called. If you do, chances are you?ll hear something like, ?Hello. You?ve reached the operator, please hold.? All the while, you?re getting slammed with some hefty charges ? a per- minute charge on top of an international rate. The calls are from phone numbers with three-digit area codes that look like they?re from inside the U.S., but actually are associated with international phone numbers ? often in the Caribbean. The area codes include: 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876.

If you get a call like this, don?t pick it up and don?t call the number back.

-----------------------------------

**There?s no danger in getting the call: the DANGER is in calling back and racking up a whopping bill.

-----------------------------------

If you're tempted to call back, do yourself a favor and check the number through online directories first. They can tell you where the phone number is registered.

If you?ve been a victim of the ?one-ring? scam, try to resolve the charges with your cell phone carrier. If that doesn?t work, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission.

And as a general rule: Read your phone bill often ? line by line. If you don?t recognize or understand a charge, contact your carrier.

I?ve got to go now; my cell phone is ringing.

All the idiot's crying it's not a scam aren't very smart! the area code nor number being in any registry means nothing. UNDERSTAND CALLS MAID FROM A SPOOF SITE TO SPYWARE AND CLOANING SOFTWARE(BASICALLY A SPOOFED CALL FROM A P.C. TO PHONE THAT BOUNCES YOUR PROVIDER AND BILLING INFO BACK, THEN ONCE HACKED CHARGED MUCH LIKE A PHONEDATING OR SEX CHAT WOULD WORK JUST WITH A LITTLE MORE WORK. DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THIS NUMBER, AND TO HELP PROTECT INFO, IC3(FEDS) MAY NOT BE THROWING THE NUMBER OUT THERE RIGHT AWAY IN EFFORT TO CATCH THE CRIMINAL. PLUS Not all these scams are from out of the country the same as you can use private proxy and hidden ip's you can run a scam out of anywhere and make look like it is across the world. this particular number and others I've been hit and bothered by, but not from a scammer but an a***ole using popular scam#'s to bug me.

You know it and your right.
Best thing is never answer the phone you don't know who is calling.

Peace, brother.

I got a call from this number (786) 204-4358 yesterday, then my gf just got a call this morning from the same number.  Neither of us answered or called back.  Just thought it was really weird that we both got a call from the same number that neither of us recognized.  Wonder if they got our number in any way from Verizon where we both have a shared plan...only way I can think of that they could have gotten both of our numbers.

They don't know its a kids phone. Probably an auto dialer. Also got the one ring article on Google, its not that but still a scam. The one ring scam is the first thing that pops up with google b/c its been looked at so many times. Its the most popular, that's why it shows first. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. And they called me, that's how I found this forum. Read slow and pay attention people

Did not pick up, on numbers I don't know, like 786-204-4358. Checked internet for where it came from, in Miami. Reading others comments about calling family members, they seem to just be going thru directories, alphabetically. Don't know why they call, but can't be for good.

I got a phone call Sunday morning from this number and I didn't answer it because I didn't recognize the number. I didn't call them back because they didn't leave a message. It's kind of weird getting calls at 3 in the morning from strange numbers

i get calls from this number all the time. sometimes when i press zero i get a real person but when i ask who they are i get hung up on and then like clock work they call back. today i called back even though every post says not to and i spoke with a lady in spanish and she said she was calling about a research project on behalf of a university. this is crazy. how can numbers like this not be disconnected. obviously based on the history of this website the number has been upsetting people for a while. and i even file a complaint with the fcc.

they are dialing random numbers.  That is why calls are all hours of the day and night is a computer with a recording.  The program makes note of numbers that connect.  Then they have your number.  New number will just possibly be the same thing it is just the luck of the draw
