Received calls from this number.  Sometimes messages were left others not.  They claim they were from M & T Bank regarding the recent changes we made to our checking account.  We did not make any changes to our account.  Sounds fishy.  Comes up unavailable on caller id.

Give NO information.  I got a few messages from them saying it was regarding the recent choice I had made concerning my account.  They said it was important that I contact them, but it was not urgent.  So I call my LOCAL branch and asked them if they called - they said NO, and if they had called, they would have noted it in my account.  They said it was a scam and to give NO info.  Be wise people - and, the first five digits of your social - if they already have the last four, all they need are the first five!  Duhhhhhhhh.............

They ask for the first 5 in most places now for identity purposes. If you receive something in the mail your first 5 numbers are blanked out but the last 4 aren't. Because of this anyone who sees a piece of mail can pretend to be you.  It's a much better security measure to ask for the first 5.

I got a call from this number today and I did not answer.  They left a voice mail stating that they were calling in reference to some recent changes I made to my account.

This is a scam and is BOGUS.  I didn't even call the number back.  I called the number on the back of my card and the representative at the bank told me to not acknowledge it and to not give them any info, which of course I wouldn't do anyway.

I received a voicemail from this number.  I searched for it on this forum and noticed several conflicting posts.  I called the number and was put on hold by an auto-attendant for about 3 min.  After that, a woman answered, stated her first name and said that she was from M&T bank.  She asked me for my full name and home phone number which I did provide.  She did NOT ask for any other information from me.  She said that she was aware that I had already opted for the "denial" method on my M&T checking account/debit card and that she wanted to confirm the decision and answer any quesitons I might have.  I confirmed that, yes I had chosen the "denial" option and asked her about the alternative which basically amounts to the bank honoring withdrawls against insufficient funds, but then charging a $37 service fee to the account holder.  The idea here is, of course, to make more money from the account holder by offering them a way to avoid addtional fees and embarrassment and still pay their bills on time even if they don't have the funds.  It is nothing more than a very high priced loan.

A few notes here:
- The lady on the phone was polite, proffessional, and courteous
- I elected to give her my Name and phone# because this information is readily available anyway, and is basically useless without more specific informations such as account numbers.
- She never asked me for any other information
- I actually user this service on my other checking account at a credit union.  They call it "Courtesy Pay"  It is a legitimate, albeit overpriced service.
- The legislation that they reference relates to the fact that banks began activating this feature on people's accounts without telling them, so of course, people got mad and the government regulatory agency got involved and made a law.
- The reference here by another poster about the law mandating the banks to ONLY communicate by mail is innaccurate.  The law states that the banks must at LEAST notify account holders by mail of their options.  It does NOT in any way prohibit them from contacting people over the phone.

CONCLUSION:
Since there is a disparity between people's experiences here, and based on what I know about this case, it is likely that M&T is conducting a legitimate telemarketing campaign, but that scammers are taking the opportunity to run "look-alike" telephone schemes in an attempt to trick people into revealing sensitive information.

I'm getting calls from this number on my pay as you go phone and since I have not given the phone number to anyone (and I do mean no one has this number) I will not answer the calls.  I have never heard of M&T Bank and do not have an account there.  I called from a work phone and there is no identity given for who you are calling.  I did not stay on the line long enough for a person to answer.

Noticed a missed call from this number. Called back and they stated it was M&T regarding the overdraft protection. They said they declined a charge on my account which is good because I wasn't aware of the transaction anyway. What I found odd was he asked for the first 5 of my SSN. I did not give him this as usually any other place asks for only the last 4.

I received this number 800-204-6004 on my caller id several times and I finally called them. It was an automation message and the female caller refused to tell me her name, only stated she is from M&T Bank and wanted to talk about over-draft charge. I told her I am aware of the law that they are to mail those info to me, not discuss it over the phone and I never received such info in the mail. It tells me that it is not legit. I did not tell the caller that I do not have an account with M&T Bank. I agree with Will, NEVER GIVE ANYONE YOUR BANK INFO OR SS#! At any time you get phone call about your Bank, credit card, etc., it is wise to speak directly to a manager and check it out. You only need to give your SS# to Social Security Administration, Bank and to employer, after you are hired, to get your paycheck.

I keep getting calls from this number and they do not leave messages. When I call the number back, the initial greeting says "thank you for holding"...hmmm, thanks for the hello.  Then someone who can barely speak english picks up referring to M & T Bank.  They have called me at all hours of the day whether it's 9am or 8pm and have been calling almost everyday for the last couple of weeks.  I no longer have an account with M & T Bank so why would they keep calling me!  And if they are just trying to be helpful by providing info, send it in the mail like everyone else...instead of bugging people morning, noon and night by phone.  Next time they call, I am making in a formal complaint to M & T bank.

I received a message on my cell phone, regarding "transactions on my debit card, and how to process these charges and going forward" with this call back number.  I do not own a debit card, and I do not have an account with M&T bank.  This must not be legit.

I'm the same Will that posted earlier.

I answered the call today and you were right.  They were just explaining the over-draft change and asked me if I prefer to have it so my card won't allow me to pull out funds I don't have.  Kind of a no brainer, but that's all.  Didn't ask me anything about my account # or SS.  Now, I feel bad cause I was rude to her when I answered.  :(

Didn't bother answering it.  Even if it was M&T, I don't have an account with them so this must be a bogus call.  Be careful, any callers without an ID or those who don't leave messages!

I received the same phone call.  It is M&T bank explaining the new legislation that will impact accounts beginning Aug. 1.  It is a legit call.  My father received the same call and the representative was obnoxious.  Didn't ask for SS# or accounts from me.
