Received several emails saying my acct was going to be temporally suspended because of high balance

Called my business number. If it indeed is Amex, then they are very confused people as I don't have an Amex card and the business the number is registered to, does not take credit cards. Beware!

Got a call from this number. Sounded suspicious. I asked the person on the phone what department this number was from but she could not answer. As soon as she asked for the credit card number I knew it was a scam. A legit cc company would never ask for the complete credit card over the phone along with a full social. Good thing I listen to Clark Howard.

Received a call like the others and when we called back, they asked for a credit card number. As we do not have an American Express card, we hung up and checked out this site. THANKS!

It is AMEX. They call when your balance is high also. I was traveling and it got higher than usual.

The *number* may be that of AMEX but that doesn't mean the caller is. It's easy to fake Caller ID and criminals can easily choose a genuine AMEX number (or other credit card company number) to forge. Always assume a call is suspect in these circumstances; hang up and call the number on the back of your card. Do NOT give out any personal information at all.

Chill Pat, just the facts. It's AMEX and it's routine. Calling me only when justified and never at an awkward hour.
Someone, anyone, calling me at 06:32, unless they got a family emergency (mine or theirs)....well that just plain sux.

Got a call from this number at 6:32 a.m. on a Saturday morning. I don't answer any calls that early unless I recognize the number. I called it back around 11 am and although it answers as "American Express," the first thing they want you to enter is your AMEX Account Number. Guess what, I don't have, nor have I ever had an AMEX Account. I also have Fraud Alert on my credit bureau accounts so no one can open a new account without calling me first. So, this is a FRAUD.

Got a call from this # called ID just said toll free. I don't have a AMEX card can we say fake. Husband just filled out a loyalty card for CVS and put home phone on it( I told him not to put a number on it). The day after he turned in the form I started getting 5 to 6 calls a day. Coincidence maybe or maybe not.

This is NOT American Express. I received this call couple times in last 30 days. My balance is $0.00. I called the REAL customer service number on the back of my card and confirmed my account is in EXCELLENT standing. No legitimate service will ever call and ask for your cc account no. and definitely not your social security number. NEVER give this information do anyone who calls you unsolicited. And do not call back any such numbers. Call the official customer service numbers on back of your cc.

Wow! Why so hostile? Not everyone is a frickin' genius like you. A**.

Indeed this number is one of the many 800 numbers belonging to Amex. They call almost at all hours, any day of the week but not outside the 8am to 9pm allowed window. They just want the money you owe them.

Yes, it's American Express. Usually if you have an overdue balance.
| Rachel 2011-06-06 20:57:19 Unknown |
Does anybody else getting calls from this number?
| Lee 2010-12-30 23:11:49 Unknown |
It's not a fake, get a grip! It's AMEX you dope. If you have an account with them, call them back....if not, they probably don't want you as a customer!

Received this call on the answering machine at work, telling us that it wasn't a marketing call, but a personal call regarding our American Express account, leaving this number as a 24-hour call back...they said to have your account # ready and that any representative could help.
OUR COMPANY DOESN'T HAVE AN AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOUNT...NEITHER DO ANY EMPLOYEES!!
BEWARE!!

Yes, this really is American Express, although I agree with Richard's comment that they need a better protocol. They should use their regular 800 number for customers to call back because I too refused to give out my account number, name or SSN to a caller from an unknown number.
The reason for their call was because my balance was too high ($5,000) for a new account. (My account has only gone through one billing cycle.) Even though my closing date hasn't passed yet and there is no payment due for another 2-1/2 weeks, they stopped charging privileges on the account until I make my next payment. Apparently they do this for new customers until the customer establishes a charging and payment history.

It did sound fake to us as well as they could not tell us anything about us or who they were calling for (we were asked to call this number by a message on our answering machine) but wanted to know our names or SS#. That sounded very suspicious but we called AMEX back (at their public number) and they confirmed it was from them. We let them know that they needed a better protocol.

Yes... don't reply! It is so obviously fake.
I hope they get caught soon.
