This is a LEGIT number you morons! It's Capital One's fraud department. If you don't have a Capital One account then someone most likely stole your info and created an account.
Jay 2014-06-09 22:57:46 Unknown
I can tell you why this is fraudelent--I don't have capital one, and therefore there is no way I could be receiving an authentic call reporting fraud. What's more troubling is how many people on here are trying to validate or authenticate it.

This is a legit Capital One phone number.

ref. 12834910131661

spoke to Kevin, forwarded to Nicholas of Fraud Dept.
the number 855 968 3131 is a scam, they just spoofed the number.

Still need to investigate, but can confirm the number is listed on their webpage.
http://www.capitalone.com/contact/credit-cards/
It is listed as one of two Fraud Protection numbers.

I received a letter in the mail that it said it was from Capital One - Customer Fraud Protection when I Google it it brought me to this site where I have learn is a fraud number. I just can't believe that this people are going to this length to get people private information. I am very concerned of how many people are going to fall for this letter. I hope that they will and do as I have just before they give their private information. These if a FRAUD NUMBER!

I received letter with COLORED logo printed on an inkjet printer (suspicions). Don't call the number on the letter, call capital one directly. I think this is a SCAM!
Jereds2012 2014-04-17 17:44:28 Unknown
This is a legitimate call from Capital One's fraud department.

I just got a call from them. Its an American lady that call me and tell me someone is using my ID to apply for a cc and ask me if I know of this address and I say NO. She said she will go ahead and shut down this cc and gave me a number to Equifax to do a "victim statement". I don't think its fraud.

I received a call on my cell phone this morning. I don ot have an account with Capitol One or a credit card. Why are you calling me???????????? This is your phone nunber
Danielle 2014-03-29 18:35:20 Unknown
Look on their website it is their fraud dept number!
Adam Ruth 2014-03-21 22:47:02 Unknown
I can back this up. The voice mail told me to call back using the number on my card. Fraudsters would NEVER do that. This is a valid call as long as they tell you to call back on a real number.
Margaret Thompson 2014-02-21 23:45:18 Unknown
I also received a call from 800 239 7054 stating that someone had tried to open a Capitol One credit card using some of my personal information. When I called the woman answering did not have an accent. She asked for all my personal info when I said I did not open such a credit account. I did not tell her anything. Soon I received a letter which had the Capitol One logo but looked like a copy without colored ink, encouraging me to call the same number. The envelope did have a colored logo. I called the Capitol One customer service, which would neither verify or deny the phone # or having a "Customer Fraud Protection" department. The person wanted my whole SS which I would not give. I have since received two more letters.
It has been very helpful to read posts about this and relieve my concerns that this had been a successful fraud. It sounds as though it is just scattershot.

I recently applied for a Capital One card, which I have not yet received. Today my husband received a phone call from this number. They would not give him much info other than a case number and wanted me to call them. I called back and they did not want the case number. I got spooked and hung up. I applied for this card in my name only and included none of my husband's info on my app. So why are they calling him instead of the number I listed on my application? I intend to investigate further tomorrow.
JayI 2014-01-09 07:49:26 Unknown
So if someone happened to get your personal information and applied with your SSN, birthday, and Name, do you honestly think they would put your number or address down as the place to send the card or call for questions? No. So of course the system can't be used to link your number to an account under fraudulent information. Just because you think it won't happen to you doesn't mean it can't.
Jay 2014-01-09 07:42:04 Unknown
That's where you're wrong. There are dedicated departments (at least at Capital One) that do outbound calls to verify transactions and to verify applications. I would know. I work in there. If you don't feel comfortable, then call back using a number off the website or back of the card. But please don't ignore it. The longer you leave fraud to fester, the harder it is to clean up.

I work for Capital One in the Identity Fraud Protection department. This is the number I leave on people's voicemail all day long. If you call this number, you may reach an associate at one of our various global locations just like any other bank. This does not mean that it is not legitimate.
If you call any other number, you would not be in the FRAUD department. Instead you would be routed to the appropriate customer service or general agent. They would not be able to assist you as they are not trained in nor do they have access to fraud systems. If you do accidentally get routed to CS, ask to speak to the Fraud Identity Department.
Some people were concerned with the (804) area code. Capital One is based out of Virginia. All outbound calls made will either show as a 800 OR 804 number. If you have different types of accounts, you may see other variations based on where the hub for that product (such as auto loans in TX) is located.
If you speak to someone or receive a message/letter claiming to be from Capital One's Fraud Protection, I stress the importance of calling in if you did NOT apply at 1-800-239-7054 so that we can close the account as fraud and help provide options for ID Theft. All options are free and in no way a solicitation. Please note that in order to verify who we are speaking with, you may be asked personal information. If you are uncomfortable providing it, you are NOT required to in order to claim fraud.
You can also validate the number on the website if you still have doubts.
At CapitalOne.com select Customer Service then Credit Cards to find a list of all department numbers. Listed under Fraud Protection is 800-239-7054

We received a phone call from the fraud department of Capital One saying someone put in an application in Chris's name and asked for his social security number which he gave. This is the same number that is now on the internet as being questionable. What is this is?
Rob 2013-12-07 22:46:36 Unknown
It's legit. I called, gave some info (reluctantly since something didn't feel right) and was called back. Once called back, the rep went over the last week's transactions I had made. All were correct and my hold was released.

I received a call yesterday from this number. It was for my husband. We recently got a secured card to rebuild his credit. We made the deposit required and it has been deducted from our bank account. The caller stated he was calling to verify our bank information and that our bank refused to verify that he was the owner of our bank account. He asked for the credit card number. I stated that we had not received the card yet. So he told me to have my husband call 800-427-9428 and do a 3-way call with Capital One and the bank to verify this information. The weird thing is.... I received an e-mail shortly later stating that the card has been mailed. My thought is if they needed to verify the bank information why did I receive an e-mail that the card has been mailed. Also wouldn't the deposit be enough verification? I believe this was a scam. He was very shifty in what he was saying and halted when I would ask questions back before he would answer. Then when he gave me the number to call back with he had to look the number up. If he was actually with the company, wouldn't he have that number on hand?

Got a call from a woman wanting to know if I had opened a Capital One account. I told her I thought it was a scam and hung up. She called back and left a message asking me to call this number.

Legit #..... It is capitalone fraud department. They called 30 sec after I made an out of the ordinary transaction. I called capitalone after I got off the phone w/ the 800 number and was told the exact same information.

Fraud prevention - my spouse recently had an identity theft issue, someone tried to open CC's for different companies in his name. Cap One called to verify that it was legit (which it wasn't) as there is a freeze on his credit reports.

I got the same call today. I thought the same thing. They must be crazy, I also have received an email saying my new Capital One Card is in the mail to me. I applied for one the other day but, when I receive it I am returning it. I will apply elsewhere for another visa. I am not going to have anything to do with capital one. Also, did you here the music they played while we were on hold. Definitely was not America!!!!!
Glad to know I was on the right track with that call. Try dialing the same number but with a 7 at the end like 7057, it's some kind of pourne (spelling) place!!

I JUST called Cap. One this morning because a computer-print-off letter went to my parent's house (they don't have this address on file for a frickin reason, thanks a lot, scammers) and CapOne verified that this is NOT their number.
