Do NOT call this number back.  I received a call as well as a fake text message alert about the "fraud".  I called the number back but it did not automatically recognize who I was (which USAA always does because my number is in my profile) so I hung up and called the USAA customer service line I have in my contacts.

I was told that the call was a FAKE.  In fact, there was no fraud at all and the text was warning me about a card with last 4 digits that don't match any of my cards.  Do not fall for it and call them!

All the posts saying it is legit are bogus.  I got a call from the number and I don't have a USAA card.   If a credit card company wants to get ahold of you, they don't do it with automated messages.   If you want to find out about anything to do with a  credit card, then only do it by calling the number on the credit card.

Valid USAA automated call about possible credit card fraud. Asks for personal info to ID you so sounds suspicious before connecting to real person. You can easily look up and call back on published USAA number.

You can see this number listed as the "Automated Security Verification" number for Credit Cards at the bottom of the page if you go to the USAA site URL:

   https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/ContactUsBank

The call is a great service protection they provide. It just prevented me from having identity theft.

It's not "bogus", it's a legitimate number & after I inquired why they had called (discovered on my caller ID) found I was out $1300 because of fraud. I'm not a USAA member but my name was forged on a USAA application. The reason they called was because USAA was suspicious & had already blocked the card use before I had even contacted them! Could have been much worse.

It's legit.  I was suspicious too.  So checked it out and called them back.  My husband and I were charging more than usual in two locations 70 miles apart.  I have always appreciated USAA's service.  I made them a contact so I will know who they are the next time they call.

We received the automated call today.  Hung up and called USAA who told us it was a phishing scam.  DO NOT give anyone calling from this number your personal information.  Use the number on the back of your card.

I called the customer service number instead and was told that it was actually USAA trying to call me on that number to verify purchases.  I was transferred to the Fraud Dept and they wanted to verify a small purchase (less that $10) that turned out to be a purchase I didn't make.  I though they would be interested in a couple of large purchases I made but they must know some purchases can raise a red flag.  USAA is a great company and I've been with them for a long time.  Got everything straightened out and am glad I didn't ignore the call thinking it was a scam.

The people here saying it is really USAA are all liars part of the scam.

The number 800-272-9440 has a caller ID of "TOLL FREE CALL" and then a robot script tries to get you to reveal personal information to "verify your account" !!!!

HAHAHAHAHAH

if it was REAL, it would have a real caller ID.

if it was real it would know your name, credit card number and billing address and not ask you for it!

It is a scam, and the people here saying it is real are all the same fake scam artist angry at web sites like this.

CALL USAA to check if there is any fraud notices or activities, do NOT talk to this fake scam artist.

I called USAA and they said they never tried to call me.

Received a call this morning - first asking me to verify my name and then zip code.  When asked for my SSN, I said "No way",  I asked for their  telephone number and I would call them back.   The individual did not know his phone number.   I then called USAA direct - explained,  was referred to their Fraud Dept.  and after my account was checked, there had been an authorized charge which they had denied.  They then confirmed other charges I had made.

I thank USAA for being diligent, but when anyone asks for my SSN on the phone, it raises a red flag.

This person is incorrect. It is not a scam. It is also not the case that they ask for information that would allow them to use your credit card (number or security code.) They ask for your zip code and that is automatically matched with information they already have about your account. Following that, you are read a sequence of transactions and asked to verify their authenticity.

So I see all these post about the number 1-800-272-9440 because I got a call from it this morning. I also got a text last night from USAA... Asking about charges on my MC. The number is real and it "IS" USAA when I spoke with them a few minutes ago I asked and told them what call and text I recieved from them. They verified the number and text sent to me!!!
This all stared when I needed some $$$ and I used my credit card at a credit union ATM. I entered the pin wrong and card was flagged, then I called and changed pin over phone. A couple days later I used the card at Dicks sporting goods and walmart and that's is what prompted the text and call.

I owe all this investigative work to my wife... The DEA investigator... Lol she stared asking me what I was buying at Dicks and Walmart?!?! I was busted for buying another rifle & scope... Hahahahahahahahaha

True Story...

Who knows why some folks do what they do?  Or why you chose to comment as you did.  What I know is that I got a message to call the Fraud Dept. about a charge by a UK firm.  It was a genuine charge and a genuine call.  I've been a USAA member for almost 50 years, and my only problem in that time was with a moron adjuster they hired as a subcontractor several years ago.

Well, I receive 4 messages and a call from this number. The messages said they are send from USAA Alert, and ask me to verify some transaction for a card ending XXXX. I looked at this message very carefully and realize I even do not have a card ending with that number! Clearly, this must be scam! I also called my own card bank to verify my thoughts, my bank said there is no problem in my card at all. For those who receive the same number, please read the messages/listen to the calls very carefully, pay attention to the details. I believe you are smart enough to know if it's a scam or not. By the way, after reading all the previous feedbacks, you may get confused. Thinking about this: if the number is not scam, why people saying it is? Do this people benefit from saying this? Clearly not!

This is the real USAA fraud prevention phone number. It is not bogus. I just called them myself to check, after seeing this number. They do an outstanding job of watching the backs of their customers, as far as I have seen. Good company.

This is the real USAA fraud number.  Alerted me about a  500.00 charge made same day I got the call.  I didn't make it.  The call saved me a lot of trouble.  Of course, have to get a new card, but thanks to USAA, I haven't been ripped off.

Valid USAA CC Fraud prevention number.  I called the main USAA # to verify it was them, and then validated a couple charges they had flagged.  Can't say enough good things about USAA, they're fantastic!

I have been with USAA for 30 years and they definitely call when there are charges to my cc that is not the norm.  When I go to Europe they have called to verify that I was indeed in there.  Luckily my husband was home to let them know that I was in Europe.  You need to do your homework. I just called USAA to verify and it is their automated number that is used when strange charges are made to your account. You are right it is not on the website because you can not make calls to that number. AUTOMATED. And yes they will call ALL the numbers listed in your file, cell and otherwise.

This is USAA's Fraud Department.

You can verify by calling the number on the back of your card: 800-531-USAA (see https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/ContactUsBank)

Enter member number/PIN
Say Fraud Department (will refer to is as Security and Fraud)
Say Report Identity Theft (will transfer to operator)
Tell the person you got a fraud alert voicemail and they will ask which card (credit/debit) and then read off the previous few transactions.

The number is USAA -- but it is best to not trust ANY unknown number which requests personal information on callback.

Go to your [USAA] account and call the number which you usually use tp contact the alleged caller.

I spoke with USAA and they advised they are working on the information that the callerID gives, to let people know it is USAA instead of a phishing attempt or telemarketer. In any case, even if it says USAA, always call the number you are most familiar with for your bank. There are lots of fraudsters out there.

Used my USAA credit card to make a large purchase from an online retailer that I had never used before. Got a call from this number (USAA fraud prevention) about five minutes later to confirm that it was a valid charge. Definitely appreciate USAA being on top of things since this purchase was well outside my normal patterns. Also appreciate this site, which  confirmed the call source before USAA had finished leaving the message.
