Just called the number back, got Scotia Bank. I don't have any dealings with them.
Don't know or care about why they are calling.

We just shopped for car insurance a couple of days ago because it expires next week, and we are currently with Progressive.  We renewed our insurance with them yesterday and paid.  Not sure why they would call, but judging by the other responses here, it was probably them calling today.  I didn't answer.

Well Theresa, I just had a call from 800-274-4240 on cell phone, I have NEVER been insured with Progressive. I don't believe it is progressive calling. Sorry, but in this day and age, can't be too careful. No message was left, and I will NOT return any call.

This number called me twice and never left a voice mail. I figure if they need me to really talk to me they will leave contact info for me.

That's something you don't wont to forget to pay. If in fact this is Progressive and not some scammer at least they could do is state their name on here.

It is Progressive. I have had my insurance policies through them for a number of years. They give a friendly reminder call when the policies are due for a renewal.

When it is time to renew my policy with progressive, I always get a call (usually it's just a reminder recording-never a live person). I just use it as a reminder and pay with my agent or online...never with someone over the phone.

Got a call from this number today. I don't answer unknown numbers so I just let it go to voice mail. Didn't leave any voice mail so that's why I'm here to find out who called me. I do have Progressive car insurance and it's expiring in a few days. I don't plan to renew with them because they are expensive and the agent that handles my account is very unprofessional. Switched to American Family Insurance and saved almost 40 percent! I'm not even kidding.

I received a call from this number and when I called back, it said is from Progressive. An automated system tells you that your policy is about to expire, but you can renew it by entering the policy number and a Visa or Master Card number (yeah, I'm that dumb! lol!). So I continued on the call and didn't enter a policy number. To continue and verify your account, they ask you for your date of birth, last four of your social; when they can't match the info they will transfer you to a rep and ask you if you need auto, home or life insurance. I said home and a "Brad" came on the phone, I told him their call seems very fishy and asked how in the world would they just assume someone is going to call back and enter their personal information and credit card number to renew a policy? I didn't let him answer, but I told him this call and phone number will be reported as a fraudulent call. I told him "I DON'T EVEN HAVE PROGRESSIVE!". I guess people fall for this kind of crap! This is crazy!!!!

I got a call from this number about my progressive auto insurance that is due to expire in three days. This is correct, so no alarms went off for me and I proceeded to dial 1 to make a payment. When I got off the phone, the following things hit me as odd:

-I was connected to a live person to collect my payment, not an automated system like I was expecting.
-He asked for only the last 4 digits of my card, did not require expiration date or code on back.
-He told me my payment was processed but did not give me a confirmation code.

I do believe this is Progressive, but I would still recommend you call them directly rather than pay when they call you. Or pay online. I think they already had this card on file so they didn't need the extra information, but it seemed odd and I'm glad I didn't give them my full card information. I should have asked for a confirmation number... there was a lot about that call that felt unprofessional.
