Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I was left a message saying to call them back and was given an account number. When I called and given them the number I had gotten the run around so I said have a nice day and hung up. They called back asking for these two people I told him (Peter Webber) that nobody by that name lives here. He then asked if I had any debt I didn't pay or checking account. I said Look I don't have anything and before anything else was said they hung up on me. I called back so they could take my phone number off and Lisa Gibbons answered the phone. I told her what happened and that it sounded like a scam she got a little upset and said it was a law firm and financial company. I said I wanted my phone number off the list and she asked for my number. I then asked well how did you get it and what was this all about which they never told me. She said she needed my phone number in order for her to get me off the list (they called me twice, they already have it) I asked her again what this was all about she was then very rude and hung up.

My husband had an account with cashnet for 1500.00.  And PN Financial called to make payment arrangement with him and Kenneth told him when he has made the payment of 1500.00 that would settle his debt.  Once we made the last payment.  I contact PN Financial and was told he now has a balance of 1902.00 and that we can settle the debt at .65 cents on the dollar. in which it will be a settlement of over 1200.00 for a 1500.00 debt. If we paid the total amount of 2700.00 for a 1500.00 debt. I think this is wrong.  The company that called was EPCO SUPPLY @ 847-425-5014. But the guy says he is calling for PN Financial. I tried to google the phone number above.  Nothing came up

I received an official sounding voice mail from Lisa Gibbons. She asked if I knew what my son was into and said she could help. (My son is a 28 year old family man)

It seemed fishy so I starting looking on the web to find out who she is. Whatever her scam is it has been running for years.

For starters, this is not a law office, it is a collection agency. I just got a new cell phone number and started receiving calls for some guy named Cliff. (I am a female so I am 100% sure I am not who they are looking for.) I called the number back to tell them they were calling the wrong number and the guy hung up on me three times. During my third call he told me to contact my attorney's office. Since my best friend is an attorney I called her on the other line. The guy hung up. She called and was connected to the manager and was connected to Tom Mason. She informed him that making harassing calls was illegal and that is was also illegal to give false impressions of what your company is. She got their contact info so she came mail and fax a cease and desist letter to them. He claims they removed my number from their system. We will see i

I received a call from this Lisa Gibbons as well indicating she was calling from Attorney Tom Mason's office and that my son was involved in a fraud case and his dad or I should contact them immediately.  I looked at the caller ID and noticed the number at the time of the all and it's not an attorney's office, but a fincancial company which, from my experience in collection, tells me that's what this is about.  An old bill my 19 yr. old son had with LA Insurance for $400, that they would never allow him to make arrangements to pay and in fact, they told him to get me to pay the bill!

Someone named Lisa Gibbons called my ex-husband's house and asked for me. She left her name and this phone number for me to call. I have been divorced 10yrs and it was not a pleasant divorce. My ex's wife is now sure they are going to get tons of calls for me for some reason and is accusing me of giving their phone number to places. I have NEVER given their phone number to anyone.
