I just got a call from this number. A guy asked first about the name of the business, which I affirmed, and then asked if I am set up to receive payments thru AMEX. I replied that we have the Square, and receive credit card payments that way. Then he said thank you and hung up. It was such a weird, short conversation that I immediately googled the number and landed here.

I then called back twice and got the recorded message that the number is no longer in service. It's too weird, and it cannot be legit. The best policy, as others have stated, is to just deal with your AMEX rep and no one else.

The phone rang twice from this number. I answered it then it beeped twice and hung up. I called the number back and received a message stating that the number was no longer in service. How can that be when it just called me?!

Voice mail with breathing noises, keyboarding and a cough. No 'real' message left. I'm the bookkeeper for a company and it was on my direct line.

Got a call this afternoon from 800-292-7150. "This call is being recorded", I was told. Okay, I said. "Do you accept American Express on your website?" a woman's voice asked. No, I said. "Do you accept Mastercard and other credit cards on your website?" she asked. Yes, I said. Then I said, who is this, but she had hung up. I tried calling the number back several times but it did not go through.

I got a call from this number recently and decided to look it up here to see who was calling.  The number they called me at is specifically set up to field unwanted cold calls and BS surveys.  Needess to say, I DO NOT have an American Express Merchant Account.  This is a SCAM!!  Heads up to anyone getting calls from this phone number!

Gal called this morning, said she was an employee with Pitney-Bowes and was making a courtesy call about our mailing process.  Phone number she gave me for a call back was a bakery!  Is this a phishing scam?

They called today leaving a similar message as those reported above.  Yeah, I've never had either an AMEX credit card nor a merchant account.  Sounds like they're fishing.

I have received at least 3 voicemails from this number...always from guys who leave only their first name. I called back, left a message. No response for another month. Another message left a couple days ago, calling about my "merchant services account". When I called back, it rang about 20 times before a voicemail message said "leave a message for American Express". I didn't. I called back today. A guy answered the phone. Said they were calling me about my new account. I said I'd been taking AMEX for 8 years. He seemed to know that I'd switched processing providers earlier this year tho, and said they must have coded me as a new account when I was switched. I called Intuit, who processes credit cards online for Quickbooks. They didn't know anything about it. I was very careful when speaking with the guy at the 800-292-7150 number. My credit card processing is done online now rather than by using the swiper. And we all know how clever computer hackers are. When I asked the guy about how other people said they'd gotten "Internal Revenue Service" when they called, he laughed and said that they were aware that there number was 1 digit off of the IRS. It was all too smooth and rehearsed for my suspicious mind. I suggest taking great care if you call

I got a call from this number.  Talked to the guy but he didn't ask for any account information.  But had information on my companies and when I set up my merchant paypal accounts.  Then asked if I got the welcome kit.  I had no idea what he was reffering to but said yes anyway, figuring my partner took care of whatever this was.

I didn't give him anything but my last name.
Should I be concerned?

Hey Dick,

First of, appropriate name.

Second, it IS a scam or it is something even more sinister than a scam.

I called PayPal directly and talked to a supervisor about this. They have NO KNOWLEDGE of AMEX calling their account holders for any reason. My inquiry about AMEX (or whoever it is) contacting me directly is now under investigation by PayPal.

Third, when I and a few others called back the number we were called from: 1-800-292-7150, there was a recorded message that ended with "Thank you for calling the Internal Revenue Service"

WTF?!?!

IRS?!?!

Bogus AMEX calls?!?!

It's either a scam or some kind of operation by the IRS or Homeland Security.

Dick, if you think this is all legit, then there's a rich widow in Nigeria that would love to talk to you about helping her transfer some funds into your bank account.

Either that Dick, or maybe YOU are part of this scam, or whatever is really going on here.

Jesus christ. Its not fraud. How would Amex be able to test your system if you have your system through another company? How can they even get in to your system, being that it was probably setup through another company. Your merchant rep is stupid if she doesn't know that Amex will call back to verify your account is valid and in good working order.

I received a call from 1-800-292-7151 and they left a message to call them back at 1-800-292-7150 regarding my merchant account. I didnt respond and they continued to contact me with the same message. When I finally answered they said they were from American Express and calling about my nerchant account. They asked if I had time to take a 2 minute survey. When I said "sure" he asked if I was satisfied with the services and I said "yes". Next he said asked if I had the machine onsite and I told him I didnt have a machine. He proceeded to tell me to go on the computer and log in to the web so that he could do a test to see if an American Express credit card would process. I told him that I didnt feel comfortable with that and American Express should have the technology to do tests internally. I also told him that I didnt want to be responsible if it was fraud. He responded by saying thank you for your time and asked if I had any questions for him.
Then he proceeded to call my business partner and do the same thing. She told him that she doesnt handle the merchant account. He hung up. Never heard from them again.

I called both numbers and one was a recording stating it was the IRS and an actuall person answered the other number with.......... " Thank you for calling American Express, my name is ERIC how can I help you?"

DEFINATELY FRAUD!  My merchant rep filed a fraud against them.
DO NOT GIVE ANY INFO. ONLY SPEAK TO YOUR MERCHANT REP YOU OPENED THE ACCOUNT WITH.

I got one too - and it's legitimate.  It's because I started accepting Amex credit cards for my business.  It's from the same phone number.

Received message from 800.292.7150 in Re to my AMEX Merchant Acct.  I do have a AMEX Merchant account.  I called back just to see,  it rang forever, and some women answered that call "how may I direct your call"  when I told her the Ext, she checked and came back "he left for the day".

Doesn't sound very assuring that it was actually AMEX.
Here are AMEX's Numbers:

A lady name Diane Yates from American Express left me a message stating she wanted to call me about my merchant account. I never called her back. Your merchant account number is similiar to your SSN. If I had called back, the first thing she would have wanted me to do was verify my account by giving her my merchant number. If AMEX wants to get a hold of me, they can send me a letter.
