I keep getting these calls as well...all times of the day and night..So I contacted MetEd who is my provider. All of these companies listed are affiliated with First Energy and this is the response that I got back in an email...

Thank you for using FirstEnergy's website.  The phone number provided is
not one of ours.  I called the number to see who it may be, but it did not
identify who it was.  If we were advising you your account was past due, we
would identify ourselves.  We also note the account when we send a call to
our customers.  There is nothing noted on your account going back to May,
2013.  We are sorry we cannot assist you.

Your account is not past due.

Strange because I don't even have any utility bills or insurance, so why they call me if late is a mystery to me, and I love in California

Again people, the call may seem to be from Ohio or wherever, but it IS from First Energy, a corporate conglomerate made up of many local power companies. Here in NJ it's JCP&L, in Ohio it's Ohio Edison, in PA it's Penelec, in 30 other states they have 30 other names. But the fact is they are all part of First Energy, and the local electric or natural gas company in your area is probably under their umbrella.

They use this number mainly to warn you that your power or gas is about I be shut off, in lost states they have to give you at least 7 days warning, so if you get a call from them pay your bill within a week from when you receive the call.

I am well versed in my utilities threatening to cut us off, unfortunately, but my point is, this call is not a scam, it's from a legitimate company and it's probably in your best interest to call them back to verify, and them pay your bill

So I was curious and dialed the number back.  Instantly a machine picked up saying thank you for calling us back,  Mon Power. So are they all affiliated?  I don't see how? But it said it was Mon Power. That is our electric company where I live. But I am paid up. Just got my bill the other day and it's due the 17th. Don't know why they are calling?  I'm NOT on any kind of payment plan? Oh well just wanted to update my experience with the number.

Today this number has called me 3 times within about 3 hours.  So everyone is saying it's an Ohio gas company??? Lmao! I DON'T live in Ohio. I DON'T have an Ohio number.  I DON'T have anything that uses gas, all electric here.  I'm glad I didn't answer!  Pretty crappy company,  they didn't even leave a voicemail

They are not misleading.  I have a new cell phone and have gotten 5 of these calls in the last two hours.  I don't have any service with First Energy,or JCP&L and would not have given my cell phone number as the contact number to begin with.  I am also on the do not call list and have reported the number.

Not sure why Ohio would be calling me multiple times a day if that is in fact who this number belongs to.  I have lived in California my whole life, and have never even been to Ohio.  How would they get my phone number?  They do not leave any message and are calling in 20 minute intervals.

BTW, if you have trouble paying your bill, ask for payment arrangements and also contact your State utility commission for an informal complaint to prevent your electric from getting shut off. You still have to pay but can work out some payment that is easier on your budget. LIHEAP helps low income people with their utility bills, too .
Good luck all. Stay warm.

It is from Penelec, the electric company out of Ohio, part of a larger electric supply company. Different name, depending on where you live and receive electricity.

This is an energy company automated message. For me it is JCP&L (Jersey Central Power & Light) & it DOES leave a message whenever severe weather is forcasted as I am a well water customer & they leave an automated message to warn of severe weather for well water customers so they can be prepared for a power outage.

Ohio edison owns several utility companies. Its a collection call.  They now call if youre one day late. I work for a util company and its the new norm since the government isnt bailing them out as much anymore.

Yeah, the call is legit, it's from First Energy, a large conglomerate of "local" electric suppliers. Here in NW and Central NJ they are Jersey Central Power & Light, in PA they are Met-Ed, Penelec and a few others, Ohio they are OhioEd and others....you get the idea, they have at least 30 different names in different states.

In any case, if you are getting a call from this number, you now have seven (7) days, maybe more or less depending on your local laws governing utilities, before they come and shut off your electric service. A word of advice, give them a call back and at the very least make payment arrangements, it will buy you some time at the very least. If you feel the amount they are asking for is too much, most states have a utility oversight group, in NJ it's called the Board of Public Utilities, which is there to ensure utility companies aren't taking unfair advantage of their position of power. Give them a call if you can't come to agreement w/ your utility company and they will then call the utility company and try to mediate an arrangement. Most states have many laws governing consumer protection from utility companies, including clauses that they can't ask for unreasonable amounts of money to continue or reconnect service...of course, "unreasonable" is a very vague, and certainly subjective term, so what the utility feels is unreasonable may be very different from what you think is.

In any case, it's almost ALWAYS a good idea to give your local Board of Public Utilities a call (look it up for your state as BPU is it's incarnation in NJ) if you are facing a utility shut-off. At the very least they can hook you up with a charity organization that may be able to help with your bill, or mediate a payment arrangement, or even find the utility at fault and force them to turn you back on (although they have to really be out of line for that).

This phone number, 800-320-2891, belongs to a recorded message service that FirstEnergy uses. Ohio Edison, also known as FirstEnergy, and other electric companies (not only in Ohio...) and utility companies use this service to mass-notify their clients & customers for various reasons. Could be for collections, or a weather alert, or any other reason. Some of you may have been reached on accident, but should still call the # back, either to be removed from their calling assignment or to find out if the message could affect you.
