Scam!!!  I went to www.discover.com, looked up their actual 1800 number and spoke with the fraud department.  I told them that i was calling because i got a weird voice message from them.  They confirmed 800-347-3072 is not theirs and is most likely a phishing scam.
Don't trust the fake posts here from users claiming they called that number and it was Discover.  Go to Discover's website to get their number and confirm yourself.

This is a Legit Call form Discove - I recently have a credit card fraud on my Chase Credit card - someone has my information and try to use it to open a Discover card.
They said they will send me a letter regarding this and I should bring the letter to the Police Station to report it so the Police can follow up on this Identity Theft case.

Hope this helps

I first received a call from this number in August on my cell phone.  The female advised that she was calling from some finance company and that a Preston Potts listed me as a reference.  I advised her that I didn't know anyone by that name.  A few weeks ago I received a call at my home number from the same company saying the Potts subject listed me as a reference.  Again, I told this male caller didn't know the person.  I stepped outside and the same male, Vincent, called my cell phone leaving a message that Potts needed to call them.  I called the number back and told them to remove my name and numbers from their records since I don't know Potts.  A week later, Vincent called again, and with a different tone, told him that he needed to remove my name and numbers from their records.  Two weeks have gone by and no more calls.  I find it interesting reading other posts back to 2008 and that others stated that Discover Card was the caller, but in my case, they said they were calling from a finance company that started with a "M."  Just a reminder to all:  Identity theft has increased immensely so protect yourself at all times and don't give out any information to anyone.

I received a letter from Discover thanking me for my recent Discover card application. It said in fortunately, they are unable to process my request at this time because they are unable to verify credit reference/application information. Problem is that I never applied for a Discover card. The letter lists a number 1-800-347-3072. I didn't see this number listed on the Discover.com site and when I called Discover at the 1-800-347-2683 listed at the site, the call rep couldn't verify that the number listed in the letter is valid. She transferred me to a department that could help me but a recording came on saying the department was closed. I am very reluctant to call the number on the letter.

This is likely Discover just fishing to get more information from you (cell phone number, etc).  That is what they did to me. Tey want to market you in different ways and want your info, this is all just pretext to get you to call in and give them more of your personal info.  It would be nice if this was investigated by an Attorney General.  Using "fraud" as a fake pretext to get you concerned enough to call in should be illegal. The charges they said they needed to check on were a total laugh, all low dollar volume purchases from area stores I go to all the time.  NOTHING suspiscious at all.  They will annoy their customers if they keep doing this.

Contacted Discover via the phone number listed on their website and they were not able to identify this number (800-347-3072) as one of their numbers.  Also the person who called "Hank Hairston" is not a Discover employee.

Remember scammers can spoof legitimate phone numbers to look like they are anyone.  Do not give personal info to anyone who calls no matter who they claim to be.  Find out what they want, then hang up and call the number on your card or on the company's website.

Did receive the same above letter. I called Discover Card Services directly and did discover that someone did try to open an account with my name, dob, and social security number.  The person at Discover did confirm that this person was from Flint, MI. This was the same info given to me by the person at the 800 347-3072 number. I did put a fraud alert on my accounts. I am also going to purchase ID protection - just for peace of mind.

Received a voice mail message from (800) 347-4736 asking for verification of my credit card application.  I called back at (800) 347-3072, that was the number stated in the callback request. They stated that they believed a fraudulent application was submitted and wouldn't give me any information, stating that I needed to inform the police and contact all 3 credit bureau's (which they provided me the numbers to), as soon as possible. It sounded questionable to me so I refused to give them any information.  When they asked for my home address, I told them that if they had my information, they surely had my mailing address so I wouldn't give it to them. It sounds like a verbal phishing scheme to me and I expect that more folks will be contacted with the same questionable motive.

Everyone, this is Discovers Fraud department.
If you received a call from them it is probably worth your interest to investigate. As a victim of identity theft, it was good to hear from them and to stop the thief from getting a credit card under my name.

I also received a call from Discover Card Services on the 25th and then Iberia Bank on the 27th. Both of the phone numbers given to me to call back are legitimate and from their respective fraud departments. they are the same phone numbers and messages listed in the above posts. After talking to both banks, I learned that someone, in fact, has my Social and Birthdate etc. and has been applying for credit cards with my info. The individual applying for cards with my name and social listed his address as 567 N. University Drive, Plantation, FL 33324-1483, phone number (818) 216-0697.

You must be proactive with this situation: I first contacted Experian and put an initial fraud alert on my account (they forwarded the info to Trans Union and Equifax); I then got my credit reports to check for any damage (if you put a fraud alert on your credit reports or live in certain states you are entitled to free reports); I obtained my credit score (this has a nominal fee attached); I found that there were at least 6 application filed in my name in the past 2 days (listed as credit inquiries on your credit reports); I had to call all of these companies and put a stop on all application activity; I also called all of my existing account holding banks and creditors and put alerts on all accounts; I filed a formal complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC); I filed a ID theft Police report with my local police Dept.; I am filing a police report with the Plantation Fl police Dept. (this is where the individual lives); And finally, I am going to contact the Social Security Administration to see if they have any suggestions on what I may do about my SSN. What I did pretty well protects my Credit; However, It does not prevent this shady individual from using my social for other pursuits such as obtaining a wireless or cable service, etc. (usually no credit checks required).

Good luck to you all and stop this activity in its tracks. I fortunately caught on to it early and no real damage was done. the activity only started on 10/25. hopefully the same is true for the rest of you.

I received a call from 302.323.5500. I didn't answer and they left a voice message saying someone opened a correspondence with disover and to call back on 1800.347.3072. I called back and they asked for my social and phone number and mailing address. I would not give her anything but my name, explaining that they just called and since they had my name for the call they had my info already. She said that they would put a stop to the account as fraudulent.
After that i called the credit bureaus and put a fraud alert.
Then I called the phone number on the discover website and they ha no record of me or the "correspondence" Or either of the phone numbers.
I'm glad I put a fraud alert and didn't give any info. They are a FRAUD> SCAM>>>

I received a letter on Discover card stationery.  It gave the number 800-347-3072 to discuss the fact that someone has opened a card in my name.  I gave them my birthdate and name, then they transferred me to their security department.  There, they wanted my SSN, MMN, etc.  I felt uncomfortable giving out personal information, so I hung up and called 800-DISCOVER, then asked for the Fraud Dept.  I asked them if the 800-347-3072 number belonged to Discover and they said yes.

Yeah it is Discover. They are required to report suspicious activity on your card. I've looked around and the number seems to be legit. Also the person on the phone gave me numbers to call for legitimate credit agencies to remove fraud from my account. You might want to look more into this!

Prank Call
This sounds to me like a scam group.  We have gotten three calls this week alone. The incoming call is from 800 347-2683, but they ask me to call back Kathy at 800 347-3072. Then they ask for personal identification such as home address, phone number or social secrutity number. First time they called without leaving a message.  The other two times it was clear that "Kathy" was two different women imposters. How do I get off the scam list?

When i called them back and asked for "Kathy", she "wasn't there" but the person wanted to know why you weren't here (i said you are a colleague that sometimes works here), and whether you are out of work (i didn't answer). Then she clammed up when i started asking questions. She claimed they are located "in Delaware."   Finally she wouldn't answer my other questions (about what kind of information they were looking for)  claiming "this is very unusual."

We were acalled by a Kathy about "correspondance on a Discover card". I was put through to new accounts & asked to provide my social security number and/or home address to "verify a new account". I hung up to find out if this was a legit #. Directory assistance listed 1 800 347-2683. They also claim to be Discover card & told me that 1 800 347-3072 is one of their 800#'s

i got a letter as well that says that " we recently recieved a discover card application that may contain your personal information, including name and/or SSN. Federal laws requires that all financial institutions obtain, verify, and record information that i dentifies each person for whom we open an account. unfortunately, we have been unable to verify certain information. pls cotact us as soon as possible at 1-800-347-3072.
in the event of SSN, name or address misuse, it is advisable to contact all three of the following credit bureau agencies to have a consumer statement added to yout credit file;
equifax ph# 8006256285
experian ph# 8883973742
trans union ph# 8006807289"
i didnt apply for an credit card and when i called 1-800-347-3072 the guy was busy tryna get more personal information like if i was a student and what is my birthday and so forth after i told him that is had nothing to do wit the account. He said he couldnt do anything becos the account has already been setup.

Received the same call; have not called them back - but i did apply online for a discover card a few days ago and instead of approving me it said I needed to speak with someone to finalize my application and gave me a number to call - I have not gotten around to it yet so I guess they are being proactive and following up with me.  Not a fraud as I can see it since they already have all this info from the online application process.
