This is getting annoying.  800-347-9431 calls daily 3-5 times. They never leave a message. I have picked up several times to tell them to stop calling, but no one speaks on the other end.  How do I stop them from calling if I cannot get someone to talk to? I thought there were laws to protect us.  Not speaking on the other end simply makes this a prank call and to my knowledge that is illegal.  I want it to stop.

Received an email claiming to be from Discover and to call this number regarding suspicious account activity. This email was not from Discover. I forwarded it to their fraud dept.

Sometimes, the phone number will show up as as 623 or 614 area code because the company who offers the program to make the automated calls is a third party company that the credit card works with. this 800-347-4996 number is discovers fraud prevention number directly to their department. keep in mind if a person calls you and not a robot thing, there should be no reason they need to ask for your personal info. after all, they are calling YOU, at the phone number on the acct. so if you get anyone calling saying something like they need to verify your social or card number, hang up and call the 1800-discover number!

Got a message at 8 this morning from the 623 area code saying to call 1-800-347-4996. I gave them a call and it turns out some asshat had tried using my card at a few places online. They took care of everything immediatly, friendly service and all.

Got a phone message to call 1-800-347-4996 immediately regarding suspicious charges.  Called the number, they asked for my card information, SS# and then wanted to know if it was a Walmart Discover Card.  Since it was, they gave me another # to call 866-611-1148

Keep getting calls and they don't leave a message.

Received call for call back to 800-647-4996 after making a large credit card charge on my Discover Card. Called Main 1-800-Discover number who verified number 800# was valid.

I got one recorded message from 614-283-1914, asking me to call Discover Card Fraud Prevention Dept at 1800-347-4996. I live in Canada, and I have never apply for Dircover Card. Then I got a phone call from live person from1-800-391-9462. Once I heard she said she is calling from Discover Card Fraud Prevention Dept, I hung up immediately.

I just got the call myself, and I was frankly waiting for it because I was traveling out of state and had some crazy charges (like a rental car for one day only) I simply called 1-800-discover since I knew that was their phone number and talked to them directly since I made the call not them. They were correct, they were my charges but they were weird for me so I understand why they called. I appreciate it rather than some asshat stealing my number and maxing out my card without me having a clue.

Got a call shortly after making a couple cheap transactions (under $1) in the past couple days and then one big transaction - the kind of pattern that does (and should) trigger a fraud prevention system.

It was Discover Card's automated fraud prevention line. The line did not ask for personal information from me, and just asked if I was [John Smith] with account ending in [last 4 digits]; if so, press 1.

It then read off the charges to me and asked me to press 1 if I did authorize the charge and 2 if I didn't. All charges were legitimate, so the call robot thanked me for using Discover and hung up.

Given that the line did not ask for any personal info - other than to confirm info that only Discover has (name/card number could be fraud, but the transaction IDs are only known by Discover), I have zero concern as far as the authenticity of the call goes.

I found a message on my answering machine which said Discover Fraud Prevention wanted me to call 1-800-347-4996.  Caller ID showed the call originated from 623-643-3294.  I was unwilling to follow those instructions, so I instead called the number on the back of my credit card.  The employee said my card has not been used for months and has a zero balance.  He transferred me to their "security" department, they answered as "Security in Phoenix", and the employee in the security department said he could not find any red flags on my account, but that 800-347-4996 is one of their phone numbers.   Then I called 800-347-4996:  They answered "Security in Phoenix".  I was still unwilling to give the last four digits of ss, my name, or anything, so she couldn't talk about my account.  She did say those outgoing phone calls are made by both machine and human being, so perhaps the message on my answering machine was intended for a person with a very similar phone number.

My conclusion:  Seems legit, but I still would call the number on the back of my credit card and ask to be transfered to "fraud prevention" or "security".

I had received 2 voice mail messages from 614-283-1941 stating to "call 1-800-347-4996 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ability to make future purchases with this account may be restricted until we hear from you..."

I had been receiving numerous calls from a collector looking for a Jennifer Shepherd (spelling different, bad student loan)and the generic message didn't sound like one I would hurry to deal with.

I had 13 messages in my voice mail and decided to deal with them this evening and the first one was on the 7th and the last message was on the 22nd (today is the 27th).

I called the 800# and it identified itself as Discover fraud dept and asked for the last 4 #'s of my credit card and then for the last 4 of my SSN. I hung up and looked on this site to find out who it really was. Then I called the number on the back of my credit card and they transferred me to the fraud dept. The charges were all valid, but my husband is out of state using the card on the same days that I use it from home, so that would flag the charges.

I called Customer Service back and spoke with a supervisor explaining my concerns. Why should I trust an automated voice telling me it is Discover and give away my personal info? Any thief can set up a system like that to steal peoples identity. I suggested they utilize the inbox on their website to notify people of any problems since many of us check our charges/balance several times a month, and that they use a live person to call (Bank of America uses a live person to call to verify suspicious charges).

I will be putting 614-283-1941 in my contacts list so next time I will know it is Discover calling. (I have my cell phone # listed for the fraud alert)

This is a valid number.

1-800-347-4996 is the main number for both fraud loss prevention departments at discover card.

the 623 number is in Phoenix az, where one fraud department is located, and there is also a 614 number that is in new albany ohio, another fraud office.  

Numbers are both valid, and do report to dsicover fraud.

Number 800-347-4996 belongs to Discover Card Fraud Prevention Security Department. Good people, and very helpful. My account had a problem indeed.

I also called the official number for Discover and they verified that this is their security department.  The call will come in on your caller ID as a 623 number but it IS Discover checking on activity on your account.

I received a call from 623-643-3329. The message left stated that Discover was calling regarding possible fraud activity on my card. They asked me to call 1-800-347-4996. I called the main number for Discover and they verified that the 800 number given was their security department. I was connected with their security department to review the suspicious charges.

This is the Discover Card Fraud Number. They call you when anything odd comes up on your statement. I verified this by calling the main discover number.
