I had agreed to make a contribution to FOP of Virginia, but like many others I noticed that the address was "C/O The UPS Store." That seemed odd to me so I inquired of the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs (804-786-2042) and was told that two organizations solicit for FOP of VA. One of the organizations keeps 85%. and the other keeps 75% of donations. So while it may not be a scam, it is profitable for those organizations. Since I promised to make a donation, I will send it directly to FOP of Virginia and if they choose to, they can contribute eiher 15% or 25% to one of those two organizations.

We received a call from this number asking for a donation to the FOP the week of October 1.
The Post Mail Box (PMB 299) address caught my attention. I am wondering if it's a scam. Thanks,

I called the F.O.P. headquarters here in Richmond, VA. and it is very legitimate. The money is set up like that to go into a bank deposit so that the secretary at the F.O.P. isn't inundated with mail and checks from donations. Please, don't disregard this as a scam. My husband, sister-in-law and mother were and are all in law enforcement. The money is truly needed.
If you are still unsure you can call 804- 745-6720 it is to the F.O.P headquarters on Iron Bridge Road, in Richmond, VA 23234 or call the Division of Consumer Affairs, Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Richmond, VA 804-786-1343.

I received a call today (2/20/13) from someone saying they represented the FOP of VA, but the incoming number they used was 540-409-4179 and the Caller ID was Local Call Area. The 800-358-8423 number was given to me after I was passed on to another person to confirm my name and address and I questioned the legitimacy of the organization. She told me I could look it up on the Internet, and I said I didn't have a computer, so she gave me the 800 number. I also told that person that we never respond to telephone solicitations, but I would consider giving a small donation to this organization. When I receive my donation packet, I will make sure to check the return address. I'm glad I checked the Web, since I'm always suspicious of scams. Thanks for all of the info. As another person did, I'll probably keep the sticker and dump the rest.

Thank you for your posts, the same thing happened to us as in the posts listed above. The letter asked for the pledged money to be sent in within 2 weeks to a return address "FOP of VA c/o UPS Store, 9702 Gayton Rd, PMB 299, Richmond, VA 23238-4907.Was about to send a check, but had a bad feeling and decided to check the number as listed prior...SO glad that we did! We work way too hard for our money to send it to someone(s) running a SCAM!! This must be stopped!!! But how??

Thanks for your posts. I received a similar call and later a similar pledge kit in late February 2012. The letter asked for the pledged money to be sent in within 2 weeks to a return address "FOP of VA c/o UPS Store, 9702 Gayton Rd, PMB 299, Richmond, VA 23238-4907. The deadline and the UPS store address have caught my attention. I started doing a lookup on the internet and thanks to your posts, I concluded that this is a scam. How do we stop the bad guys?

Received a call in February 2012, same message as everyone else, the return address C/O The UPS Store caught my attention also. Thought I would research before I sent my check, have decided that it is in fact a scam. Thanks for your post.

We received a call from this number in December 2011. They said they were calling from the Fraternal Order of Police raising money for things like the death benefit fund for surviving officers and Cops with kids program. When I asked them to follow up the call with a letter, they already had my address. The letter they sent also had the same return address mentioned above: FOP of VA c/o UPS Store, 9702 Gayton Rd, PMB 299, Richmond, VA 23238-4907. No large reputable organization like the FOP would be receiving donations via a UPS Store mail box!! I did a search on several websites to check charities and none have this exact charity name, nor an address anything like this. BEWARE!!! This reeks of a SCAM.

I too got a call from this number on 10/29. claimed it was the FOP of VA. They said they were soliciting for their donation fund. I told them to send me something in writing. I received it today. The address is not that of the VA FOP and what's interesting, the fine print states that my donation IS NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE. I went to the VA FOP website and they are in fact a 501c3 and are tax deductible... Something is very fishy. I'm going to email the VA FOP about this and see what they say about this company that supposedly is solicting on their behalf.

I got this same call, and almost sent a check out today. I noticed the same thing on the website about the donations being tax deductible. I'm am attempting to contact FOPVA via the phone # on the website.

I received a call but it was from Charlottesville, VA. I usually donate to the FOP. They mail you a sticker along with a letter for your donation. When I received the information they sent in the mail the letter had the 800-358-8423 phone @ # the top of the letter. And when I read the return address to send my donation it was to FOP of Virginia, c/o the UPS Store, 9702 Gayton Rd, PMB 299, Richmond, VA. This immediately caught my attention. When I called the 800 # the mailbox was full. I have decided to followup with my local FOP for additional information.
