Telemarketer
Received a call at 8:03am from a telemarketer representing Childrens' Cancer Recovery Foundation.  She asked for my
husband but when he was unavailable,  she opted to speak with me.  When I questioned her about her charity and asked for the website, she became annoyed that I interrupted her delivery and hurriedly gave me the website and hung up while I was in mid-sentence.  She gave me an unfavorable impression as being perfidious and insincere in her cause.

These guys are using Associated Community Services who post a 'spoofed' phone number to make it look like they are calling from your local area, their offices are in Michigan.  ACS is known for keeping most of the money that they raise, and for working for charities with questionable practices.  http://www.tampabay.com/americas-worst-charit ... ervices-inc-acs and they have been fined $155,000 for violating laws in 10 different states.  You have to ask yourself, if Children's Cancer Recovery Fund is legitimate, why would they use such a sleazy fundraising company?

Children's Cancer Recovery Fund is listed as one of "America's Worst Charities",

that seems like not a lot compared to the $33,000.00 a year you spend on maintaining your website or the $50,000.00 a year you spend on bank services as per your company's tax records that are available on line.

Found the tax exempt IRS forms from childrens cancer recovery on line.  took  me about 10 minutes.  Here are the numbers for 2011 from the 3 companies they use for fundraising:
Associated community service collected $3,189,435.   paid to charity  $1,432,542.00
Contract Communications collected $818,796.00   paid to charity $159,396.00
Brickmill Marketing Services  collected $374,184.00  paid to charity $0

These numbers are disgusting and this charity claims that over 80% goes directly to the charity.  These numbers are also before childrens cancer recovery takes out their administrative cost.  We can see that not a a lot of our donations actually go to the children.  Please everyone do a little research before you donate.
Caller: childrens cancer recovery.

You are either delusional or a liar.  Associated community services does the telemarketing for children's cancer recovery foundation and they do not take less than 52% for any charity they collect for and often take as much as 80%.  I saw the numbers for their collection and what went to this  charity and it was appalling somewhere between 20 and 30%.  I received a phone call from a very aggressive telemarketer and decided to do a little research, it wasn't hard to find a lot of info on this and many other charities and how they manipulate their numbers.  I guess these charities and telemarketing companies just assume most people don't take the time to find out how much actually goes to the charity, but the numbers are out there and not hard to find.  Everyone should check it out and never donate to a charity over the phone, because it is almost always a telemarketing company.  Contact the charity directly and skip the very expensive middleman.

We made the mistake of donating once to a fireman's charity.  Since then we receive six or more "private" calls asking for more money.  We are on the Do Not Call list but the calls keep coming.  Now they are calling from local numbers to.  207 517 6179

Lynda,  this is an invaluable post - thank you for sharing it!

Last week, early one morning (before I had my first cup of coffee,) the phone rang and and a female asked for me by name (disturbing that this scum has my personal information.) While she neither clearly identified herself nor the organization she was representing, she launched into her spiel: a spiel that sounded oddly familiar! When asked if she could, "send me an envelope for a small donation," I responded, "sounds good" (by the way, NEVER say, "OK" or "Yes" when speaking to these rodents.)  She then continued on, with the excuse, "they make me ask this" and tried to elicit from me how large a donation I would be making, concluding with the comment, "the usual donation is 75 to 100 dollars." At that point, I said "Bye Bye."

After hanging up, I reviewed my records and discovered that a female had used this same spiel twice in the past two months: first incident representing "Breast Cancer" and the second incident representing "Leukemia."  Further research revealed all three calls are connected with a questionable outfit going by the name of  "Associated Community Services." Here are some of the other names (subject to change as federal regulators close in) of "charities" ACS solicits for:

Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation
Breast Cancer Society*
Cancer Fund of America
Children with Hair loss
Children's Cancer Recovery Fund*
Disabled Veterans Services
Firefighters Assistance Fund
Firefighters Charitable Foundation
Firefighters Support Services
Foundation for American Veterans
Law Enforcement Alliance of America
Law Enforcement Education Program
National Children's Leukemia Foundation*
Operation Lookout
Vietnam Veterans of Washington State
Youth Development Fund

My mother lives in an Assisted Living Facility and has been getting calls from this charity tele-marketer.  The last one happened when I was visiting her.  She said it was the 7th call rec'd from them, since she had promised to send $20.  She is 87 years old and doesn't need this harassment.  She requested a self addressed envelope in which to send her donation.  None was ever received.  So, she sent me to find the Foundation address on the computer--and I find THIS!  You would do better to save the money you are paying to telemarketers, and use it to save the children.  Right now all you are doing is pissing-off your charity-base!

Listen to the conversation? When I was called, I was not informed that the conversation was being recorded. Isn't that illegal? Besides, the caller (with the fake name of "Vanessa". Everybody who complained about getting calls from all over said the caller's name was Vanessa, LOL), asked, "If we send you a donation card would you be likely to consider making a donation?" If you say yes, she asks, "Would you CONSIDER donating $20?" I said I would CONSIDER it and next thing I know someone is "confirming" my pledge and mailing me a payment envelope. If it was taped, I wasn't told about it.

I keep seeing it posted that the bad reviews of CCRF were based on information garnered a few years ago when it was under different operations. But the latest "50 Worst Charities" was updated this year. CCRF comes in at number 11, with 0.6% of donations spent on direct cash aid.

This company is nothing but a sleazy organization who blames everything on their "fundraising staff."  My elderly aunt who has dementia fell victim, they had the gall to phone her and get her to donate four days apart!!  I am extremely well connected to the media and shall be taking this public hopefully on a national scale.  I have a stack of receipts from various organizations interestingly enough all the receipts look the same so obviously one telemarketing company is working for various so called charities and just sharing the names of easy "targets"  like my dear aunt.  I was at her home when they called and I can say they had her in tears, they were bullies and only when I got on the phone and threatened them did they back off.  Her mastercard was also compromised about the same time, possible connection??

It appears this charity hires one of those "boiler room" high pressure telemarketing firms to fund raise.
If this charity had the tiniest vestige of legitimacy, it lost it with that maneuver. Advice to board members: FIRE YOUR FUNDRAISING STAFF.

Your organization called and hung up very early in the morning, despite my active listing on the do-not-call registry,  There are three pages of complaints at Charity Navigator and an extremely low rating. There is no audited financial statement on their website.  From  all indications, and from all the complaints, I conclude  that the Children's Cancer Recovery is a scam charity.

Wow! I received a call from this organization a few weeks ago and had the same basic experience as many people have already stated...high pressure sales pitch, someone calling me back less then a week later to see if I had sent in my "donation" and absolutely no response when I said my husband had recently passed away from cancer. Not an "I'm sorry to hear that"...nothing. When I stated I could give a small donation, the woman on the other end of the line said "What do you mean by small? Our smallest amount is $40." Unreal. I received a pledge card, but after reading what I have just read, I will donate my money to a more deserving organization.

I just received a phone call asking me for money as well. The gal wanted my credit card number and was very persistent. I told her absolutely not and she still kept asking. Told her to send me information to look at. After reading what was sent and doing a little online reading, I will give my money to CureSearch where I know it will be used correctly.

This organization called me a few times.  Each time the rep was extremely nice and was very sincere sounding about the unfortunate children suffering through cancer.  I felt bad a really wanted to give something, As I spoke to the rep each time about how much I would love to, but, I am also a cancer patient and have been out of work for a while, with many bills still to pay and my family to feed, they wished me well, expressed their understanding, then proceeded to try again to get me to give.  I began to repeat myself and the reps quickly says thank you anyway.....and abruptly hangs up in my face...........I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!

Charity Navagator was given  our updated 990 and has yet to update our information.  The info on their site is from two years ago.  At that time our organization was connected with another charity from which we split apart from.  Since that split our program numbers have been above 80% every year.  We share all of our financial info.  You can find our 990 on our website under the about us section.

Sandra,

I am sorry to hear about your father.  I also apologize for the way that you were treated on the phone.  That is not how our callers are trained to treat our partners or donors.  We have looked into your situation and this caller was terminated immediately after listening to the recording of your call.  Again I apologize for the manner in which you were treated.

Sincerely

I received a call today from a telemarketer calling on behalf of CCRF. When I informed her that my father was recently deceased she ignored me and continued reading their statement. I tried four different times to get her attention before she began to mock me and refused to provide me her name. She continued to say "Thank you so much" each time I asked for her name before she hung up on me.  My father died of cancer and to be ridiculed and harassed in that manner was horrific. Shame on you.

Hello Austin,

I was checking out your organization here prior to submitting a donation via mail.  Upon checking with the BBB, they've listed your organization as "DID NOT DISCLOSE", which for me is enough reason to NOT go forward.  I don't know why you people haven't disclosed your financials to the BBB, but if you're not willing to be TOTALLY transparent about them, then I just can not contribute... you need to rethink your relationship with the BBB.

Same issue. We received a call in September 2012. High Pressure Sales Pitch. Kept insisting we pledge $40.00 and wanted credit card information. We asked them to send us a pledge card. They again asked for the credit card information and we refused.  We ended the call be getting transfered to another operator who stated they would send out a pledge card out. After receiving the card I researched the foundation and company they are using to make the calls. Not please with high pressure person who called to raise money for the foundation.  Suggest they find another company.  I have 90 employees who work for me and Customer Service is #1. This company will get the CCRF in the black.  I will give my money to other causes.

Good Luck!!!
