Debt Collector
It is Bonneville Collections.  I helped a family member out who paid the bills and then the company forgot to switch the last payment to thier name and was quick to turn the last bill over to the POS collectors.  They wanted all sorts of personal info that you are not required to give out by law.  The Privacy Act of 1974 is a pretty damn good thing that they didn't have the slightest clue about.

Lessons learned never help anybody out and never give out personal info (especially to a blocked/ restricted number).

It is against the privacy act and the law for them to call and harrasse you at work. If they call you at work, tell them this is a place of employment and to remove that number from their files. If they don't you can in turn tell them that you will file a law suit against them for harrasement at work, in which they will have to dismiss the bill with no payment. Providing you get a judgement. Just make note of the days and times they call. Have your employer even tell them not to call and have them inital those times. You will have them dead to rights.

Called for my wife at her parent's place which is a private number. This is not my wife's number, and she has no idea how they got it. I asked to take a message and they said "it was regarding a personal busindss matter" Obviously a creditor or collections agency.

They have called me at work at many times on my cell phone all in one day!  The number is unknown, so I don't answer while I'm at work.  When they called me at work, they are very rude!

that's bull**** Bonneville didn't loan anybody any money... they are being paid to collect a debt. the least they could do is do it with some respect, if they didn't block their caller id or left their name in a message, I'd be more inclined to call them back, but for right now, they can suck it.

eh... sort of.

By law they have to tell you who they are and that it is an attempt to collect a debt.

But, just in calling they don't have to tell you, and shouldn't, because of privacy concerns - if you aren't that person then you shouldn't have that information.
(and in those cases , I believe they can call one time only to request the location/contact for a relative)

Absolutely.
Collection agencies are notorious for using shady tactics.  And there IS a law governing what they can and should do, but rarely do any of them follow it, until you call them on it.
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, first from 1978 I think.  It includes when they can contact you and how, and they also are required by law to provide written information, and you can also write a formal letter for cease of contact.
They cannot be rude to you.
The vast majority of them 'forget' to report the clearance of debt.
And for all this ' man up ' talk, number one cause of debt is medical problems.  People don't choose to get sick, this isn't all putting a tv on lease and not feeling like paying for it.

This isn't somebody whining, I got my services, and I want to do the right thing.  But I was a legislative aide for Congress, I've seen stacks of these before.

How are they rude?  Well lets see, there is no excuss for talking to someone like they are just trying to run out on their responsibilities.  I am sure they hear poor me storys all the time, I'm sure that some of the ppl are not telling them the truth.  However, that doesn't mean that everyone is.  There are some things in life that are more important to ppl than paying a credit card. Such as, not being homeless, putting clothes on the backs of their children, and being able to eat.  That being said, todays economy sucks because of the past lending practices of the banks, it is not because some ppl didn't WANT to pay their bills.  If the mortgage companys wouldn't have givin $500000 homes with adjustable rate mortgages to ppl who could only afford a $250000 house, their wouldn't be so many forclosures.  fact of the matter is, the consumers aren't the only ppl to blame for the economy.  and every situation is not the same, don't be mad because YOU hate your job, sometimes ppl have to put their wellbeing and that of THEIR family before your bill:)

Uum actually collectors can call a place of employment it is not against the law. Now if someone said don't call me at work then the number is taken out. True there are circumstances that are more important but remember someone provided a service for you and if you provided a service for someone wouldn't you want to get paid so that you could in turn put food on your table for your family? Medical needs are just as important as food and there are financial services to help people. As long as you communicate with collectors instead of being an a** most of them will work with you. It takes an a** to have that kind of attitude. It takes an a** to expect something for free. At least make an effort dude come on!!!!!  Some collectors are jerks but we all have things to pay for especially when others willing to provide a service for us right?

Amen I totally agree. People run into problems. Dont tell me that has never happened to you because I know that you would be lying. There are rude and ruthless. I have know problem working out payment arrangement but they want ridiculous amounts of money for a payment. They are rude and they lie. They can not be trusted. If they agree to some kind of offer or arrangement you need to get it in writing. Otherwise bend over they will screw you in the A**!!!!!!!!!!!!!

actually moron....you cannot call somebody at their place of business.  It is illegal and could land you in jail if repeatedly done.  At least there is a fine involved.  While I agree, people should pay their financial obligations, sometimes circumstances are such that it is more important to feed a family then to pay a medical bill.
I for one could not imagine working for a collection company, 99% of the people who do work there are themselves in financial distress, but dont care when they call the people who need to pay.   It takes a special kind of a** to do that job!!!!!!!!

When these people call, the number comes up restricted and they leave a message.  They never tell me who they are or why they're calling, they just leave this number (800-392-7569) and ask me to call back.  Haven't yet and don't plan to.  This is ridiculous.

They can not call your place of work if you answer the phone and tell them "That this is a place of business and do not call back."  They can call your lan line as much as they want, but they are not allowed to harrass you at your place of employment.

Sometimes it is not the "Consumer" that is the problem but the business! I cancelled a contract per their stipulations. The idiot manager ran my card (which expired after I cancelled the contract, therefore did not feel the need to update them on the new expiration date) and incurred fees from a third-party billing company. He now wants me to pay them....he did it two months in a row (obviously, a complete moron!) and now they have sent me to collections to try and collect! How is any of this my fault and why should I now have to deal with collectors? I pay ALL of my bills when they are due! I do not have any credit card debt.....why am I the one dealing with collections??? So, get off your high horse and realize that it always isn't the consumer at fault! Talk about a dumbass!

Sometimes it is the insurance's fault the payment wasn't made for whatever reason.  In my case, I had to update some of my info and they sent it to the wrong address and stopped payments until the could verify if they were the only coverage I had which has been the case for the past 15 years.  Got it resolved and payment made.

But the collection company isn't the company owed.  They are getting a fee and it is a lot easier to work with a customer oriented individual than one that is irrate for no apparent reason when the money isn't their's to begin with.  Think before you speak or is does it give you bigger complex because you are able to hide behind the phone and act as a bully.

read the post below!! Never set up an arrangement with a collection agency.Espcially if it is boneville collections! I did that too. From day one I wanted to handle my debt. I was unable to work for quite some time after i left the hospital & my previous job actually fired me due to the hospital visit! when i did find a job  I wanted to work with collections when they called.  But could not pay the bill in full it was thousands of dollars! so i made monthly arrangements. I paid each month and on time for 6, or 7 months then one day they called to say they were not going to accept our orginal payment arrangement! they wanted to double it, and each month it would double 200$, 400$ then $800 yeah right. They refused to accept my payment & told me they would garnish my wages in 14 days if I didn't agree to their new payment plan!  Now i'm getting garnished & the 1,400$ I had orginally paid to them ....they didn't include that in the garnishment like i payed that money for nothing!  good luck get a loan and pay the snake s off! believe me they don't care about you they tried that with me too!

Debt Collector
About a year ago I became severly ill and was rushed to the local hospital. I nearly died that day.  Then again several days later when (still hospitalized)  I learned my insurance co. wouldn't cover my $4000 dollar & mounting hospital bill!! I tried making several arrangements but due to the hospital stay I lost my job! Ulitmatly my case got sent to collections/boneville agency.  At first all was fine I let them know I had just got a new job & was a single parent at that time i could only make small montly payments. they agreed to this. I made them each month on time desperatly wanting to resolve the debt.  Then boneville stopped accepting my payments! they told me I would have to pay in full or begin paying $400 a month, then the payment would double every 3 months!!  I worked to find out my rights & if this was legal. 'Could they refuse to accept my money & then suddenly change our contract?' But it was too late now I'm getting garnished! If you ever have to deal w/Boneville collections do ANYTHING you can to pay them in full & on time! DO NOT set up monthly payments with them! They are sneaky, unfair, & very rude.  I wouldn't doubt what they did to me was illegal!

Lily don't try to defend your employer's practices.  You prey on people and entice them to spend money they don't have, and when they get themselves in over their heads, you badger them day and night until they pay up, calling them all sorts of nasty names.

Or in many cases, people get sick and their debts pile up beyond their control, but to you people they're just deadbeats who don't pay their bills.  Some are deadbeats, but many are in circumstances that are the result of a string of bad luck, situations that very quickly spiral out of control.  You need to have more compassion for these types of situations.

Of course, if it's just a college student who bought a plasma TV, new computer, new tennis shoes, etc. then by all means, badger them 24/7, PLEASE.
