800notes is an anonymous forum where posters are NOT checked to be who they say they are before they're allowed to post, and no way to prove if you (Nickname#3) is the same poster as Nickname#1 or Nickname#2 above. No need to be embarrassed because there is absolutely nothing to tie you to the 2 Nickname posts above.

800-428-3500 is not listed as a HBC contact number  http://financial.hbc.com/en/credit/contactus.shtml
1.  SCAMMERS post LIES on 800notes to convince potential victims that this is a legit number (and it is NOT).
2.  CallerID is *NOT* a trusted source for legit HBC phone numbers.
3.  If 800-428-3500 calls you, DON'T answer or give away any info.
4.  NEVER call 800-428-3500 back.
5.  If you need to call HBC, use a number from a TRUSTED SOURCE (back of card, bank statement, website, phone book)

I'm back... well turns out there is fraudulent use in the card.

I would still advise being careful for calls like this, but it seems like in this case I was in the wrong. Sort of embarrassing.

Totally agree with the sceptics here. I you are concerned about whether a call is from your credit card company or not, always call the number on the back of the card.  In this day and age it pays to be cautious.  It never hurts to call the credit card company if in doubt.

Also, I just thought of something on the fake postings here. If this was actually legitimate, who would really go online and defend the number? Lets say your credit card company called you to check for fraudulent activity (we're presuming this isn't a scam), would you then scour the internet, find posts against them, and defend them? Probably not.

We just got the call today. Sounded fishy from the start, so we put in incorrect information. An Indian woman answered once we got through and we hung up.

We called the actual number for the card and our account is up to date as of yesterday.

They )GE people) called again about 20 minutes later and we decided to answer in Spanish. They actually connected us through a Spanish-speaking person, but we hung up.

Not sure if it's real. It's really sketchy. If there is a problem, we figure we can check later. I agree with the post above and I think some of the posts are fake. This company is smart.

Another shill posting here.  This is a phishing fraud - never give any card digits to any caller like this - regardless of the lies posted here.  Very suspcious the number of shill postings here all claiming the number is real and giving detailed excuses why you should believe them - no real person would do this.  Don't be fooled, as many have been.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

There are 3 numbers on the back, not 4. They ask for the last 4 digits of your credit card and your date of birth to verify your account before transferring you. Now if they asked for all 16 numbers, the 3 on the back, your full name and mailing address, THEN I would say it's fraudulent! When I got the call, they didn't leave a message, so I called back and it said "GE Fraud Department". I had to think which of my cards was GE and then figured it out. Someone had charged $2,900 on my card today; I've never had a balance larger than $260 on that card, which triggered them to call me. I'm not sure why they didn't leave me a message, and it caused me to be a bit cautious, as anyone should be with the way things are these days!

Completely legitimate.
It is the HBC fraud prevention people - I have gone through this process on two separate occasions.
The first time I was skeptical, so I called HBC directly and they confirmed the authenticity of the service.
The automated system asks you to key in your card number and then confirm the name on your account (which it will tell you), then asks for your birthday. It does not ask for the security key on the back of your card. It will then read you  a list of "suspicious" charges and ask you to confirm each one.

I also receive a letter  stating 'To protect against unauthorized use, we have placed a restriction on your HBC credit card account until we can confirm that there is no fraud occurring" with this same phone no. 18004283500 on that letter.  I am requested to call this number to discuss the matter.  I did not call, as I check my balance on line, and found nothing wrong. Also I can pay at store with that credit card recently.

I also received one of these calls supposedly from HBC Credit about unusual activity on my account. It said to press any key to continue but I didn't because I've heard of problems called by pressing keys for scam calls. I checked my account online and there was no unusual or remarkable activity on my account.

Relax people, it's not a scam.  It's HBC, and they are calling for 2 reasons.  Number one, you probably used your card abnormally, which means in a different region, or for a higher amount then usual.  Secondly, they also want to sell you that stupid insurance, which I suggest you don't get..It's a waste of money and if you carry a balance, you will be charged interest on it as well.

I got the same call from this phone nomber. Almost the same story. Last time, I wasn't at home, and they left a message for me, said" from GE money fraud prevention department to verfy my recent activities" ; This morning, they called me again. I eard of machine's voice and stopped the call, because I didn't find this phone number from HBC official web. It's better to call the numbers shown in the web or the back of your card.

I just got a call from this number however when i call them back it only gives me two options and no operator. Red flag that this is not a legitimate call.

Also, the card they called about was changed to a new number months ago.

Yes, I verified that. Google shows ups.com but actually your credit card company is switching their phone number to another financial institution. It might shows unknown on your TV. No worry. It is legit.

It's legit, it's a fraud department that handles different cards that have suspicious activity. This was for The Bay's Mastercard.

much tired of phone calls that could be fraudsters...only people who have the correct information need to call.  These phone calls always have you pressing certain buttons on your phone for input information, that is not what I would do...I hang up.

this is legit!!! If you have an HBC credit card or any other credit service funded by GE money you can call the customer service line (at the back of your card) and any body there should be able to verify this phone number's authenticity with you-  if they know what they're doing

This number is GE's automated fraud prevention department number. (GE Money is the underwriter of the HBC MasterCard). HBC customer service gave me this number after my card was locked after an unusual amount of transactions.

The automated service never asks you for your full credit card number, only the last 4 digits to verify the card holder.

Legit call, although why in this day and age of scams would you have an automated call without the option to speak with a live person......?  I was skeptical as well.  I too called the phone number on the back of my credit card, and they confirmed this company was legit.  I returned their call, and all they wanted to know was if I had made an overseas purchase online the day before. I did make the purchase myself, so all was OK. They were just being cautious, which was a good thing.

It IS a scam. I called my credit card company and they said it was NOT them. They wants my numbers on the back of my credit card...those 4 numbers that you are private and not to be given out! BE CAREFUL. I hung up on them, and they called back and asked me to call them back.

The caller at this number initiates many unwanted calls. I do not have time for this and I don't know how the caller has time for this either. This caller should be charged for harassment.

I did not call this number but the customer service number on the back of my credit card. The person pick up the phone knows immediately what was going on when I told her this number. She transferred me to another line which the person there only asked my name, no any other information. She told me that a purchase was blocked and asked me to verify.

This is a legit number. I prefer this way as opposed to having to wait for a rep everytime my card gets flagged. Discover has the same system. Adam are you perhaps using Skype to call? Skype generates a new number everytime you call someone. So your area codes/phone numbers will be all over the map.
