I just received a call from this number at 11pm CST, asking if I were Helen. When I replied that I was not and that I had the same cell number for 5 years the female asked if I had ever received calls for this Helen person; I told her no and she told me that was odd that I hadn't. She then wanted to ask additional questions without identifying herself or company name.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Perhaps you shouldn't assume that debt collectors always have their information straight. I have gotten repeated calls from this number at all hours of the day and night and I have never borrowed money from a payday loan establishment (nor from any similar predatory lender). I have no outstanding debt other than the typical mortgage, car payment and credit cards, and all of these are in good standing. Your assumption that people who are being harassed/abused have somehow brought it on themselves is not only shortsighted, but naive. Too many people are too quick to blame the victim.

This company was stealing money out of our bank account after someone stole my fiancee's debit card number. We canceled her card, and the calls began. I guess they thought we wouldn't notice? I should make it clear that this is a  "company" we've never done business with, or ever even heard of, for that matter. Never taken out a loan from them, never even applied for one.

Our credit union took care of the fraudulent charges, so that's resolved. They keep calling (probably because they want more of the free money they had become accustomed to stealing).

I can't wait for these pieces of garbage to call me again.

I would gladly "pay my bills" if it was really mine. The complaint is that they are getting calls about money they do not owe not that they do want to pay their bills and to ask maybe a silly question why would you be on this site if you pay your bills? It someone wanted to duck paying bills they sure as the hair on my head would not make it known on a website for everybody to see now would they?

Pay your bills nimrods and you wont have them calling you.  Stop being deadbeats, and pay the money you borrowed. It's funny how people come to this forum to complain, but were happy to take the cash.

My sister's info was stolen and they started calling and jokingly threatened  her.  She was informed by police that her info was compromised.   They are part of a fraud.  Had to change her number.  Now they are calling me asking for her.  More jokes...

Caller asked for me, then asked if I knew XYZ ABC, I replied yes, since it was my husband's name.  Then caller asked if he was the XYZ ABC that knew Brooke Bollinger.  At this point my daughter started just wailing so I hung up as the call appeared to be going nowhere.  I briefly caught the caller saying something about she would try and call later *rolleyes*.
