2/16/2012: recd call from 800-473-2400 about fraudulent activities on one of my WF cards.  Didn't like the 'call our number and give your credit card info' sounds too phishy.  Instead, I called the '800  to-wells' number from the back of the card.  Turns out, I did have fraud charges on my ccard today. so the 800-473-2400 appears to be legit.  (They handled the claim/reversal responsibly)

Just to be safe though, always call the number on the back of your credit card.  As a practice, never give your ccard/ssn info to someone calling to request it!!

good luck.
BTW, I'm also a Wells employee, but was suspicious of the orignal voicemail.

Hope this helps.

Just received a phone call telling me there has been "fraudulent activity on my card" and to procede with the prompts. I hung up, checked my on-line account and did find two activities today on my card that were not made by me. I called the number on the back of my bank card and it was decided to cancel that card and have a new one issued. Even though the purchases were small I was told by the banker the person who has my number will start out small and take out everyday until it adds up. Note to self: check on-line activity daily!!

Same story - Wells Fargo fraud protection supposedly.  Called and entered a fake CC#, got a person who was evasive and eventually belligerent. Then said they were from First Data of Omaha, but couldn't provide me with a corporate tel number.  Very clever.  Phone calls came 3x per day to my cell then stopped.

I have gotten two calls from these people today. I answered the second time, and no one was on the line. I called the number back and an automated message came on, stating that it was the Wells Fargo Fraud Prevention/Prevention Center and asked whether I was calling back regarding a call they placed or letter they sent. I hung up.

I called the number on the back of my Wells Fargo card, and verified that there was nothing wrong with my account and reported the number. Apparently many people are getting these calls, but she made no indication as to whether Wells Fargo was doing anything about it. She did however give information you should be aware of: When the Wells Fargo (or any bank, I can vouch for that) calls you about Fraud they 1) LEAVE A MESSAGE and 2) LEAVE A REFERENCE NUMBER.

Hopefully no one will get roped into giving their personal information away, but if you have been getting a call from this number, do not answer or talk to anyone. They have been hitting lots of Wells Fargo customers.

Another Wells Fargo fraud automatic call from 800-473-2400.  I have no Wells Fargo accounts, and I thought this was iffy to have a robo call on this topic. A google search turned up this post.

Just talked to Wells Fargo, IT IS A SCAM.

SO... i used to work for a call center under Barkleys bank. the uk bank, and we handled Credit card Customer service for up to 65 different Barkley card partners, including places like Apple computers, long story short...this sounds like what we would do all the time and the number one type of call i  would always handle. we had a similar automative fraud machene that would call out, ask for info and confirm the charges. like most of you, our customers were skeptical and stubborn to produce information over the phone and therefor it would rout their call to me, and in this day and age i don't blame ya. but i was trying to use my card last night online and it was continually declined, after recieving a call from the number in question, but never answering it, i entered it into google and this is what it brought me to, it makes sense to me now being that i tried the same transaction like 5 times when it was getting declined, which at Barkleys would have triggered our auto fraud alert systems. any way.. i called the number, being in the "biz" myself i had no trouble intering my info and it brought up my charges, i confermed them, and my card is now useable again. pretty strait forward. and as for calling all the different wells fargo branches and customer service, they don't know crap half the time. like for me, i worked for an outsourced call center called Firstsource, not Barkleys, if you called barkleys, they whouldn't know who the hell Firstsource was, yet it was our call center that handled over 90% of all their credit card services. any way. i just felt like putting in my 2 cents.

oh and P.S. any time you have card trouble or are skeptical...just call the number on the back of the card, itle always get you to the people who really know whats going on, not whatever number you can find on the cards website, just my other 2 cents.

p.p.s....or is it p.s.s.,,,idk, the number btw i used was (800) 473-2400

Just happened today(got a call).
It made me look for my card.
My card was missing....had just gotten gas.
Called the 800 number on my daughters Wells fargo card (did not call back the 800 here).
Someone WAS using my card.
after it was all straightened out I told them about this number.
They said it WAS indeed them callling (its not the number on the card but it prompted me to look into the matter and I am so glad I did).  SOmeone was trying to use my card repeatedly.
All they were successful at getting was some gas (since I must have dropped it at my local gas station) and they must have guessed at my zip code.
If you get this call....don't bother calling it back....just call your local wells fargo, or go in!

It is Wells Fargo fraud dept. It starts with a computer message asking if you'd made certain charges. If you answer no, then you're connected with a live person. The only personal info asked for before speaking to a rep is your zip code. When speaking to the rep they ask about certain charges and if you'd made them. I had been ready to play head games if this had been a scam, but the rep asked about charges that only I and the bank would know about. The rep gave me a case number for one charge that was on my acct and I later got an email thru WF about the case number. It seems someone had been using my card to run up around a $1000 in charges, mostly at motels (?). I am certainly glad WF called.

Call your bank!   Got a call from this number tonight.  They left a message (automated) asking me to call back this 800 number.  I googled it and found these reviews and read one about Wells Fargo Fraud.  I instantly logged into my online banking and YEP!  FRAUD!  My balance was $0 and frozen.  If you get a call from this number check your account immediately!  I called wells fargo directly (didn't call the number left from automated message) and there have been charges on my account from California to New York in the last 24 hours.   Call your bank if you see this number on your phone.

I get a call from Wells Fargo Fraud Protection nearly every month either to tell me there is a fraudulent charge or to try to sell you Fraud Protection.  The first time they called there actually was a $399 charge that I didn't authorize.  Closed the account and haven't had that issue since; however, they still call and I tell them every month that I'll go to the bank to look into it.  They say I can't take care of it at the bank.  One month, I just laughed at them, and the 'sales rep' laughed too.  Yesterday 4/29/11, the rep was so rude, he said, good luck, just dripping with attitude, that I know its a scam.  I think that if the charge goes thru they try to get other info / accounts, that is why they are calling.

Got this call from this number about "100$ purchase being declined by wellsfargo fraud department" And they wanted to validate purchase that were made.. I never get scammed by this kind of garbage but it didn't help that the previous day I signed up for Wells fargos identity theft protection at the bank.. I assumed it had to be the same thing...

Anyways they made purchases at a TJ Maxx 2,000 miles away. I went to bank, reported it immediately. If you get this call it probably already means they purchased something in your name. I would go to your bank immediately!

WHEW! I literally just got off the phone with Wells Fargo about this number. I got the call from this number, got the automated voice but was so skeptical that I called the wells fargo number at the back of my card.

She said that indeed there was fraudulent activity on my card (in Hawaii). She immediately went through all my activity, canceled my card, yada yada yada. Just have to go to WF to get a temp card and sign paperwork that I wish to files charges against the person the MANUALLY entered my cc info (as well as expiration date and security card) in Hawaii.

Here's the deal though: She said that number COULD be a scam (she wasn't able to verify that number) because once I ran my card, it got rejected, that number called. She said it could very well be that the person(s) that stole my card can see my activity/when I try run my card, had the automated machine call and ask for additional personal information in order to charge more crap on my card (and supposedly 'clear up' the fraud activity when in fact they're just getting ALL the personal information they can from you).

When it comes down to it: THIS IS YOUR MONEY, DON'T RISK IT AND JUST CALL THE VERIFIED NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CC! Better safe than sorry.

I received a few calls from this number and they did leave messages asking me to call back. I called the standard number for Wells Fargo Fraud Prevention and there were some declined transactions on my card. Having now read through these posts, I would say that this number, 800-473-2400, seems to be too consistently accurate to be a scam. Having once worked for Wells Fargo for a number of years, I can confirm that their internal communication systems suck; it doesn't surprise me that some customers might be told that this is a legitimate number while others are told that it is not. Wells Fargo's employees often do not know or even have easy access to comprehensive information of this kind, such as all the different 800 numbers that might be in use for a single department.

Even though this number is probably legitimate, it never hurts to take previous posters' advice: Don't give out credit card information over the phone if they instigated the contact, only if you call a number that you know to be trustworthy.

This number is legitimate. I got a call from it today, but having read through all of these comments, I called Wells Fargo via a number listed on their website instead and asked them. The banker I spoke to verified that the number belongs to the Wells Fargo Fraud Prevention . So I called the number back. The automated system did not ask for my complete account number, only the last 4 digits. It did not ask for my social security number either. Only the last 4 digits. All of the transactions that the automated system listed were legitimate. And my card is still working quite well. Be a bit skeptical of anything you read and call Wells Fargo via the number listed on your card or on their website. If you're in doubt, ask.

This is a legit number.  I had a suspicious charge with my card in Memphis TN when my card was in my wallet in California the entire time.  I was skeptical to give the lady on the phone the last 4 of my SSN but she was able to verify the last 6 charges in my checking account, the amounts and the places the charge were made.  I then gave her the info she asked for and she cancelled my card.

Then I started thinking.. Oh s***, why did I give that info over the phone!!?!?!?  Then I googled this 800 number and came across this post.  So I frantically called the number on the back of my card and talked to a Wells Fargo Rep who was able to verify my card was indeed cancelled less than an hour ago.  How the hell can a scammer get into Wells system and cancel my card #?  Why the hell would they cancel my card # if they wanted to use it to steal?  The rep I just had on the phone told me there is almost no way for him to look up the phone number I received the call from as they have 1000's of them.  He told me not to worry, my card was cancelled, marked as stolen and a new one was on the way.  All before I even talked to him.  I just hung up the phone with wells not 10 minutes ago.

The fraud prevention number for Wells Fargo is (800) 867-5568 you should be looking for numbers you can find only through your online account or the phone book. If you do a reverse look up on the fraudulent number you can't get a name.
