1 ? Tell them that you ? and Federal law ? require them to send validation (proof) of the debt in print by U.S. Postal Service mail (don't give out your address; if they don't have it it's their tough luck in picking the wrong person to scam)
2 ? Notify your local law enforcement authorities about what is happening
3 ? Next time they call, make sure to tell them that you have notified law enforcement
4 ? Record any and all future phone calls from these people and *tell* them that you are recording the calls (in some states you are required by law to inform the other party that the call is being recorded but you should do so regardless of what state you live in). Personally, I'd tell them their calls are being recorded even if they aren't ;-)

First they call with a number that is from your area code that makes it seem as though it's a local call, then they ask for your name and last for digits of your social before they even identify themselves. I would not give them my name, nor did I give them any information. I asked for a call back number so that I could call them back, ask the name of the company, and what exactly they do before I would give them any info. The only information I would give them is "A" name, as Mr or Mrs and they gave me a ton of information without even any identifying information they even had the right person. They threatened me, called me names, demeaned me, and then I informed them they had no idea IF they even had the right person. After doing such I reminded them that as a collection agency, there are HIPA laws for one, for two they are not allowed to use tactics such as demeaning people due to their financial status, as well as say they would ruin their credit, or that they are taking them to court in order to collect. If they have no intention of doing this directly after your conversation within the time period they allot you, they are in direct violation of FEDERAL collection laws. You cannot use a threat as a means of collecting unless you follow through. It's intimidation tactics which are illegal. The company they called me about was someone I had stopped doing business with over ten years ago yet they claimed I used their services. Their services are for valid active households and this could not be so due to I had a house fire and there was no home at that address for three years, therefore there could not have been a service provided at that address during the period of time they say I owed for. They did not send me a letter prior to the call, when I asked for the original creditor and a copy of the original bill with the signature showing I signed up and used these services, they continued collection efforts, when at that moment, they should've taken my information, name and address and sent me the information for my review to assure they had the correct information. These people are improperly trained. Ask to speak to a supervisor, review and be aware of your rights, and remind them that they are being recorded just the same as they say you "may" be recorded. Get the name and badge #, ext #, or supervisor name of the person whom you are speaking to prior to your conversation. These people get fined by the gov't for illegal practices. Let them take their lumps. You have to take yours, don't let people push you around just because they can't see your face. They think that gives them the upper hand, and it does not. Make sure you have copies of the original creditor billing and charges. Don't pay for things that aren't your responsibility and make sure that the hiring company takes responsibility for the kind of people they hire. Otherwise you don't want to do business with them in the first place!!! They go by many many names. Always get a call back number and verify who they are online prior to speaking with them and always call the original debtor first. That might not even be the correct company collecting. Your credit bureau reveals your debts, why pay them twice? They can get into your garbage and get your info and give you a different address saying they debt has been purchased from the last company when that is also a scam. Be careful people!!!

These people are rude and ungrateful. Just spoke with and Angelina Cortez and she informed me that I have a bill that is due and I have to pay her the money. She said that she works for the company that I owe and that I had better make a payment to her today. Well...for her information that is not a bill I have nor will I pay her anything. Since I spoke to her I have gotten 7 phone calls from them. I am seriously thinking about filling a harassment suit against them. They need to STOP!

This company Covergent Outsourcing LLC calls and leaves a recorded message for someone that doesn't live here. They have called 30 times and left messages on our answering machine. They want us to call them if we are not the person they are looking for. If you received this kind of call from them, report them to the Do Not Call list federal agency DoNotCall.gov This law about unauthorized phone harrasment was passed by congress 10 years ago.

I have gotten several of these calls. A british sounding woman who says that I owe money that I know I do not know owe with a company that I am now currently doing business with. They give you a 800 number and a reference number to call back. They ask to verify the last four digits of my social, my address and then ask if I intend on paying this debt. I stated I did not owe this and tried to get some information and the british talking woman said ok, and hung up one me.

If you get a call from this company, do not give out any information. They will tell you that it is from a legit company. Probably one you are doing business with.

I have received phone calls at my Mother's phone number for me for the last couple of weeks. (I haven't lived there is years!) I finally talked to someone last week about these phone calls. They are just trying numbers with people of the same name as me. They asked me to verify my SSN# & I refused to give that out considering I don't know who these people are or why they are calling , then asked for my address again I refused. I asked why they were calling first then maybe I would verify some info. They were calling for a Chase bank acct. I have NEVER had a chase acct. Then went on to ask me about a Washington Mutal account, again, I have NEVER had such account. Said she would take my Mom's number off the list. A couple days went by & now they're calling everyday & sometimes a couple times a day. I happened to be here when one of the calls came through and again I wouldn't verify the info as they're NOT calling for me! So the lady said "ok, fine. We'll just call back later." and hung up! They called again today & I caught it and again they hung up on me! I called back and told them to be considered reported! This is harassment!

I have been getting calls from this number for the past couple weeks and I also got a bill in the mail saying I owed $X amount of money but they would settle for %50 of it. It never said what the debt was for and every time they called they left a weird double automated voicemail telling me to contact them. So the other night I actually answered the call and as soon as I got a live person they hung up. So I called back and it would hang up and recall and when I got another live person the call dropped again. It was really weird and sketchy. Anyway I finally got through and I got to find out the debt was for an AT&T wireless account I have never had. They lady kept trying to talk over me and I told her I never had an AT&T account and she said "ok bye" and hung up before I could tell her to take me off the list. Lets see if they call me again and if they do this time I will tell them not to contact me again and if they do I will take legal action.

I just got a call from convergent - same number - they were trying to collect on a phone bill that was from 2002 in my married name.  Uh - hello - told them to send me a request in writing - she said ok and hung up without even asking for my current name or address.  How did they get my direct line at work - but they don't call my cell or my home number?

I got a message from them today stating they were looking for someone I didn't know.  I called the number (800-477-5451), got automatic answer stating for me to hold.  After a minute, I was disconnected.  Thanks to a giving spirit, I decided to continue to call back as I was unloading my briefcase and waiting for my PC to boot up.  On the 7th call, I finally had someone pick up the phone.  I told them I was not the person they were looking for.  The lady was very nice and asked for my phone number so it could be removed from their system.  I'm going to bookmark this page in case something develops, but must report that despite the annoying fact I kept getting disconnected, I was not otherwise negatively affected by this experience.

I work in a dental office. Having an understanding of dental insurance, there are usually co-pays or deductibles due for service. Depending on the plan, many times the "ton(s) of money" the insurance pays barely covers lab fees and materials. I find it reprehensible that people go to an office, receive a service, and shirk their financial responsibility. I had blood work done last year and WITH insurance I had to pay over $1,700.00 out of pocket. Was I shocked at the amount? Yes. But I set up a payment plan to pay it off. I don't blame the office. Their fees are set the way they are for a reason. Many times doctors (dentists included) have high fees is in part to compensate for dead beats who can't take enough responsibility to pay their bills. If you are concerned about how much you have to pay out of pocket, call your insurance company (or your dental office) and ask questions prior to service. It is YOUR responsibility to be educated about your benefits. If you can't afford a private office, go to a clinic or a dental school where you will sit in a waiting room all day and possibly receive lesser care than you would have received at the "evil" private office. It is people like you that cause the prices to increase for everyone else. Keep in mind how long dentists go to school for what they do, as well the cost of keeping a qualified staff, the high expense of dental materials, etc. I don't know what type of work you do - or if you work at all - but I suspect you would be up in arms if you felt you were not being properly compensated. Stop being a leech and pay your bills. If you are in the difficult financial situation you say (and I have been in that position myself), make payments as you can and tighten your budget. If you have to skip a few nights out or make a few adjustments to cover a payment plan, it is well worth it in the end - your credit won't suffer and you will have more self-respect knowing you have met your obligations. Nobody is entitled to freebies based on their circumstances. $5 or $10 per month if that's all you can afford is still an effort to clear the debt YOU have incurred.

I got a call from 917-512-6579 or 9175126579. When you call back, automatically your number, name registers up on their computer screen. They ask you for your 4 digits social security number. Don't give any personal information. They are very harrassing and low-life people hired to act like monkeys as bill collectors. Tell them to stop harrasing you, record your phone calls when you call, either by cell phone or mini recorder..and if they continue, you have options to report them to the police ( to achieve a complaint report) and subsequently, file a law suit.

I chewed them out..but they too are very ignorant and forceful, they sound like minorities as you would expect
