I received a voicemail at my place of employment referencing call back number (800) 478-5809, Ext. 244 from a Kim Jones.  She gave me my account number as well.  Before calling back, I googled the number and found information that this caller is trying to scam me.  Needless to say, I will be watching my caller ID and will reject this number if it continues to call.  If they do get through, I will be sure to ask for written verification and their company's demographic information.  Thank you so much for the help!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

They just called my job and mind you I work for the largest credit card company in the world.  I have had these calls before, and have friends that work in debt collections.  There are protocols that they must follow and if they are in violation which these crooks are then they get fines and big ones.  I am surprised with the level of reports I have seen here that nothing has yet to be done to stop them.  I called them after their business hours and the company the answering machine gave was "second chance financial"

I received the call from a Kurt Barnes ext 229....stating the same song and dance.

I got a call today from this number. The voicemail was from Amy Anderson and she said she had a wage assignment and to call her back at 1-800-478-5809 ext. 222. I called because I didn't know what they were talking about and they said I owed $300 on a payday loan and if I didn't make a payment that they would be submitting a wage garnishment to my job. I told them I wasn't going to tell them anything. I went across the street to the last place I had taken a payday loan from and they said they didn't show me oweing anything and that the number that called me was not from their company. That's when I knew for sure it was a scam. I was pretty sure it was all along, but I wanted to make sure the payday place didn't make a mistake and not show me as paid. Just another scare tactic to try and get you to pay money that you don't owe.

I just got a call from this company Second Chance at 1-800-478-5809. I do owe for payday loan but am working with a debt pay day loan company. She gave me three offers to pay the debt and the lesser amount she wanted today. I asked her what is the name of the payday loan company and she could not tell me. I asked her if she could mail me a statement with what I owe and she said she could send me or email me an authorization letter. I asked for their address and she told me to hold on and a man came on the phone and I asked him for their address and he stated he would not give me their address because I could be a "Stalker or serial killer." He was very rude. He stated that he was going to move forward with my file at end of today and garnish my wages. He also said something about my driver's license. I am glad I did not give them any of my information to pay them. They are scary, nasty and do not sound professional at all.

just got a called, stating that I got an unpaid loan from speedy cash in nov. 2012, I never do online payday loans. Kurt Barnes is who called me. They called my job also. He had my ss, address, my former bank acct. info.,& former email address. He stated they were about today at 2:00 pm o a wage garnishment. He wanted my credit card information, but  didn't give it to him. He asked if I had a prepaid card I could use. I did, I told him it had expired, and he said he could still take the information for file purpose, and I just had to get an updated card, and he would give me a courtesy call within a couple of weeks for payment. I am contacted my bank to make certain there was not a deposit made into my account

I was stunned when I found this site. I did get multiple calls with the same scenario. It shook me up and I am still shook up. A woman named Lori Bauman called me with a case number. She said it was urgent to call her back. When i did not only was she nasty but she was NASTY. She hung up and I called back and asked to speak to her supervisor, Aaron Norwood. Since that conversation I have been dealing with him who has informed me that I will have my wages garnished. He said the loan was taken out in 2012 . I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS UNTIL NOW. I Have never received any thing in the mail or a phohe call until now. So he said I owed the original creditor Green Cash Now $300 but with fees it was now $1402. He was willing to settle this for a payment of $269 TODAY with a credit card or debit card. THis went on all day. I told him I would call him back to let him know. He then stated it was too late for the offer and that my case had been flagged. He then sent a fax to my employer which I retrieved off the fax machine. It was a VERIFICATION of employment. He said I would now be garnished $242 every two weeks. I DO NOT KNOW what to do but now after reading other posts on this site, it sounds similar to scammers. I am glad I did not pay it or give my debit information. What can I do?

I just also received a call from Kim Jones at second financial with only a case number and that someone was trying to have my drivers license suspended and to call herr at 18004785809  ext 244 and I must do this immediately.  I just called but noone answered closing early on Friday and googled the company second chance and found the exact phone number here or given to me to call as being a scam with the same person's name and the same scam, debt, money for license.  I will be contacting the state attorney general, our Congressman, the Houston Attorney General and Prosecutor's Office because my family knows several individuals that hopefully will stop another innocent victim from having a mild heart attak.  The caller i.d. shows Bresnan of Colorado at 9704246733 and ripoff, consumer reports, many others say they have also been threatened with their licenses, sheriff's department, and other terrible things.  Can't the Attorney General just find their address or at least turn those phone lines off?  If I can help prosecute or if anyone knows more, please let us know.  We are tired of people tryhing to victimize innocent folks.  Rodney Marshall 8325455361

Thank you CWG40. After reading all these complaints I closed that account out that Lori Bowman claims to have on file. Some lady name Mary called my job today and told me I committed check fraud we yelled at each other after she seen I was giving in and my coworkers let her have it to so she hung up. We called the name back twice just to see would they say the companies name and neither time did they say the name. Oh yeah Mary also told me she was going to send the paper's over to my job main office to set up garnishment I told her to do whatever she wants to do. I'm tired of them calling my jobs because we do not suppose to have calls at work unless it's an emergency.

Total scam.  Don't pay any attention to them.  If they have a valid debt tell 'em to send you a copy of the debt with all particulars and tell them to mail it.  E-mail no good.   They don't do this; tell 'em to go to hell. Loudly!  This Second Chance financial is run by a particularly nasty group of kitchen-table scammers.    They will often threaten people will loss of driving privileges and confiscation of driving licenses, which is total nonsense, only DMV or a court can do that.  Debt collectors have no legal power whatsoever.  Debt collectors cannot garnish wages either.  Only a court can do that and only after a hearing where all parties get their say.

Don't talk to them; don't give them any information.  Don't agree to pay anything to anyone.  If they can't produce a debt validation, then they can just go to hell.  I wouldn't put up with the stuff they hand out.  I'd tell 'em where to get off quickly!

To further protect yourself you might get a call blocker.  Also don't pick up on call numbers you don't recognize.

I received a call at my job on May 15th from Second Chance Financial and I spoke with Lori Boeman (Bowman) and she said I took out an internet loan of $300 and now the bill is $1000  and  something dollar but they will settle for to payment of $280 which will total out to be $560. I'm like I didn't take out an internet loan she like yes you did its all your info bank name email and etc. She said for me to call her back before 5pm with my credit card number because after 5pm the papers will be sent for me to be garnished 25% of my wage until the balance is paid off. I kept telling her I didn't do no internet loan she like well you have to pay this. If you have a drinking habit or smoking habit then you need to quit so you can pay this and you need to go back to school and better yourself so you can get out of this mess. I'm like I don't have any habits and your being rude. Then she treating me saying that they are going to take away my driving privileges she even had my drivers license number then she said if the payment do go thru they are going to proceed with the garnishment. Lori called me from a 1-800-478-5809 ext 240 and she also gave me a case number then she said she was sending me an email that I never received. Lori also fax some employment verification over to my job I told them not to feel them out because I think I'm being scammed. I received a call from Kim Jones threatening to have my license suspended. She left a VM stating this. I contacted the FTC and filed a complaint and sought legal advice and now, I am going to file a lawsuit in small claims court. I am sick of these people with their empty threats and lies. Now, I am going to start hitting where it hurts. I called to get the address info and I spoke to a very rude and ignorant lady who said you can only get a $1000. That's it. I stated if she knew the laws, she would not have left that illegal message.  I would encourage everyone to file a complaint with the FTC and the state's attorney general's office in IL and wherever you reside.  Lets all stand together and expose these crook.  The best to all of you.

Empty threat to scare/intimidate people into paying.  Only the courts and your state's Department of Motor Vehicles can put a suspension and/or restriction, etc.,  on your driver's license, and they most certainly would not for a civil matter!!!

Just recieved a call from 1-800-478-5809, ext: 223, Mary Stephens, stating I owed a pay day loan and that they were going to garnish my wages. Funny, that they had my personal information, I informed Mary that the loan in question had been paid off 2 years ago.  I requested proof, and she stated she didn;t have that information that my case was forwarded to their office.  After hanging up, I called back requesting a physical address where my lawyer could send documents disputing this loan, they hung up on me.
