Debt Collector
They just called telling me they were collecting for CapitalOne.  They tried to get me to give my information over the phone and I refused so they said they couldn't talk about my case.  I verified two small things and they said I owed x amount and would I like to take care of that today.

I asked for the account number and it doesn't match the number on my card that I was sitting and looking at.  They said that it must have been an older card, blah blah blah.  I said I refused to pay on an incorrect account, for all I know they've stolen my identity and are trying to get more out of me.

I have not received phone calls but strange as it is I received a 1099-C (tax form) from this company.  Now mind you I have never received any other commication from this firm and on the tax for it jsut says "consumer debt" in box 4.  Does not identify original creditor.  This seems like a scam to me.  Can anyone let me know what do with my taxes since I already filed them.  I do owe some debts but am not sure this is legit.

A call came in from this number today, on my Mothers line.
I turned off the answer machine so it wouldn't pick up. It rang about 8 times.
Based on what I have read here, is't a debt collection service.
Mom was never in debt. Besides she died in Nov. 2010. I just haven't disconnected that $6 a month line.

Just got a call from this number asking for a person I never heard of. This has been going on for several years. Usually it's RPM and this is a first for Calvary that I am aware of.

Every time I explain to that there is no such person at this number and that we've had this telephone number for nearly 20 years, the pretend to remove us from their "list". Then it starts again.

The calls are relentless at all times of day with many hangups and recorded messages. I HAVE to answer, I am the emergency contact for an elderly relative and it makes my heart pound when I hear the phone ring so early in the a.m. or so late at night.

Today, this guy said it's in the Transunion credit report. Huh? Not in MINE, but in this fake person's report?

I'm contacting our Attorney General's office about this every time they call.

Debt Collector
Cavalry Portfolio Services is a junk debt buyer.  Once the primary creditor has given up on collecting the debt they write it off and sell the junk debt to bottom feeders like Cavalry.  Depending on the type and amount of the debt, they may pay pennies on the dollar.  The Wall Street Journal published an article about 18 to 24 months ago about the massive number of large, unsecured (i.e. credit card) debts that had defaulted from when the recession began in 2007.  The article said that most debt over $10,000 was uncollectable and was being purchased for $500 (5%) or less.

Cavalry will often purchase someones debt of $50,000 for $500 and then hope to settle with the individual for $20,000, and if that won't fly they'll go down to $10,000, then to $7,000, etc.  A number of those debts will be discharged in bankruptcy and they'll get nothing.  But all they need is a few to settle or file chapter 11 and all they have to do is have their auto-dialers call and call and call until they get a human online.  That's when their minimum wage flunkies get on the line and try to scare the human into making some sort of payment...even just $25, and that is a legal maneuver that is an admission of the debt.

As others have mentioned above, do not speak to these people until you have educated yourself.  A good source is bkforum.com.  You'll learn how these bottom feeders add fees and interest to the debt they purchased even though those acts wouldn't hold up in a bankruptcy court.  Knowledge is your best defense when going against junk debt buyers.

Be careful.  Admit nothing and ask that every cent be verified.  If you have something to lose, consult an attorney or ask for help on web sites like the one I posted above.

My aunt had a balance with an old credit card that was apparently written-off.  They must have sold it to another company, then sold again and finally sold again with an approximate $10,000 due.  She received the last notice for this amount on 4/2/11.  A notice from Cavalry Porfolio dated 5/24/11 now shows a balance due of $17,388.......then one dated 5/15/11 for a balance of $17,814.........then again received on dated 9/12/11 for a balance of $18,297.  But they are soooooooooo sweet to reduce the balance down to $14,638.  Why aren't they special!!!!!!!!  No other company increased the balance by any amount....let alone from what they think is from the last date of payment.  I'm not sure the state of Florida allows this.  Also, the original credit card company must have sold it to another bank before all this "selling to a third party" occurred.  Cavalry will have to be nuts if they think any of these tactics will get some one to pay on a balance that was written off by the original company and sold for pennies on the balance.

Debt Collector
Cavalry Portfolios LLC in NY, a debt collection company hired by Citi Financial to harass innocent people, called me from 800-501-0909 ext: 13558 and asked for someone else. When I told them it was not me they were asking for, and to stop calling my number to reach him, they said since this is the number they had on record for him I would be held liable for his debt from Citi Financial. I asked them how this was legal, and they said it was. I told them they should take me to court and we can let the legal system decide if I am legally responsible for some other person's debt just because they have the wrong phone number, and they said that if I did not pay them, that is exactly what they would do. I gave them my attorney's name and number, and to call her instead of me. They said they would not do that, and would continue to call me. I decided to hang up at this point as it was pointless to discuss the matter intelligently with an uneducated collection abusive representative.

Today, I filed an official complaint with the Texas State Attorney General. Cavalry Portfolio sent a debt collection letter to me that appears to be compliant with FDCPA rules, but with an AMOUNT DUE THAT IS TOTALLY FALSE.  I mean it -- these people actually INVENTED a number and had the huevos to send a request through the mail that I pay them some moola. The payee is Sprint PC, which was my first mobile phone service THIRTEEN YEARS AGO! There was absolutely no balance due with Sprint when I switched to a different cell phone service.  Beware everybody!  Pay no money at all ever to this company -- they are scammers and all-out frauds.

This is a BS company.  They are buying debts from legal debt collection agencies that have been time barred.  They then try and harrass you to get you to pay, but they cant make you.  They try by threatening, harassing, etc. BUT THEY CANT DO ANYTHING if it is a time barred debt. In our case it is OVER 12 years old.

I just received a call from these people.  They asked for my wife.  I ask is this a friend or company.  The person on the other line said a friend.  They told me it concerned a personal matter.  They gave me another number to call back from the one they where calling.  They then said let me give you a reference number.  I don't know of any friend that would hand out reference numbers.  So I again ask what company they were from.  They finally told me Cavalry.  I wouldn't call these people back.  They aren't even open about who they are or what they are calling about.

Even some attorney's are telling people not to talk to them not matter what because they will continue to harass you and be rude even if you ar eno the person they are trying to get money from ...very bad ethical practices from what I can tell...check out rip off reports...pissed consumer...or look through any search engines...they have complaints at attorney general offices and the FTC

lol i hate paying bills, and luckily for me its paid off, i've sued 4 other companies for harassment. and this place will be number 5. make sure you record all phone calls, and make sure you get a little belligerent with them, if they return the tone, you win the case, bill collectors ride a very fine line for that anyway since they make 300+ calls a day through a computer so you could get rung up to 10 times a day. courts are starting to see that this is a big problem. so just hire an attorney and he will find the company and start the legal process in a court near your legal address. the company will send a rep. and will most likely settle the dept and pay a small cash settlement back to you, my payments cover the lawyer and court costs and put about 5-7grand in my pocket,, works every time. this place has called me three times today alone. a few more calls and they seal my case. good luck

Recieved a call from these idiots, they are bill collectors. They called for the people who used to have my #, didn't state any SS #'s. I just agreed and waited till he was done to let him know that thy had the wrong person. I never stated my name or anything, he got on the line, asked for my phone # and then told me all about the debt. I told him twice that he had the wrong person, after #2, he hungup.. Makes me feel secure that companies discuss legal matters with the wrong people.. Did he think he'd get cash from me?? LOL

WE have been receiving calls from this number for weeks...assume it is a political call. If I can determine who is calling, you can be assured that THAT candidate will NOT get at least FOUR votes from our neighborhood. Given that the Democratic Primary is to take place on Saturday here in SC, it is undoubtably a political call.

Have any of the candidates grokked the fact that the calls have a NEGATIVE impact on whoever they call voting for THEM.  We've already decided that whoever is behind the calls will NOT get our vote.

I have already sent an e-mail to my legislators asking them to see if they can get our attorney general, Henry McMasters, onto the anonymous callers.

I received a phone call today from Lwanga @ 800-501-0909 Ext 13574 Cavalry for you Services.  He wanted to speak to my husband Frank.  He verified the name and then asked me to verify the last four digits of his social security which I did not do.  I will never verify anything as important as a social security number or credit card number to anyone.  Debt collection agencies try everything which can be unlawful.  I would prefer that they no longer call our number again.  It is very annoying.
