It's nice that he helped you. But, if you copied and pasted his response to you, it's riddled with errors and I'd be wary of anyone giving financial advice who doesn't use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

I completely agree with you. Go all the way with this. These people are scum. I graduated high school in 1992 with a scholarship. Twenty plus years later they want to harass me about some non-existent student loan. Do they think people forget and just assume they really do owe it? Yeah, as we get older we may forget some things but to take advantage of that...dead wrong. Hope you have success bringing this company down.

I agree this company is on crack. They called my disabled mother and harassed her on the phone about information about me. How they even have my mother's number is beyond me. When I called them back they wouldn't "divulge" what the call is about but wanted my social security number. Are you kidding me? Who gives their social out over the phone to someone they don't know. I asked if the call had anything to do with my health or welfare because that's all I ever deal with these days. She insisted that she couldn't "divulge" that info until I gave my social. I might have mental health issues but I'm not an idiot. Can we file a harassment complaint if they continue to call?

Received phone calls from them 4x in the last week for someone who has never lived here. They claimed that the person had left our number as his number, when he clearly had not. I'd watch out for this group.

THIS IS A SCAM.  THEY DO NOT "OWN" ANY STUDENT LOAN YOU MAY HAVE TAKEN OUT.  They get old credit reports and try to get free money from you for loans that have already been paid.  Do not make any payments to them, because even if you do owe for a loan, it will not go toward that debt.  They keep all the money themselves.  THEY ARE A SCAM AND KNOW THAT BECAUSE THEY ARE RUDE.

Ryan Henry from Progressive Financial Services calls and asks for Social Security Number.
Do not under any circumstances give someone you do not know or call your Social Security Number.
The only time you should give out your Social Security Number is if you place the call. For example, if you receive a call from your bank get a phone number and call them back. You never know who is calling so never give out personal information.

I never found out what the call was about because I did not let it continue beyond that point.

Wow, you are such an a***ole.  You probably think your postering and screaming is somehow impressive... or intimidating.  It's pathetic.  People don't pay because they have NO money.  Get it?  WTF is wrong with people like you??  It's sick.

I haven't had a job since 2009 due to fighting cancer, and yet I'm getting calls from you people for a debt of $14,000 for ONE class.  And yeah, that doesn't include any interest or penalties.  Tell me how ONE class cost $14 grand?

Harassing me or others won't get you any money.  Calling people's work is ILLEGAL.  Calling relatives and harassing them is ILLEGAL.  Calling multiple times in a day is ILLEGAL.

So just shut up.  Go away.  Why would anyone want to work with you?  You are nothing but a disgusting bully.

People really need to learn what is allowed when it comes to debt collecting.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) restricts collection agency calls in many ways. Illegal practices include calling you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., discussing your bill with anyone other than you, your spouse or your attorney, threatening you with harm, using profanities and purposely harassing you with repeated calls, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Debt collectors are forbidden from threatening you with arrest and jail or saying they will sue you unless they intend to follow through. You have a right to report them if they use illegal tactics.

Sorry to hear that you think you don't pay your bill when you withdrew from school... if you ever attended a class you OWE the money... the Department of education or the finance company that HELPED YOUR GET WHAT YOU WANTED isn't held responsible for your problems of life.  The only way the Deparment of education will forgive you is if you applied for classes and the school closed down before you attend.  Now, if you work and they FINALLY take your taxes, YOU ARENT PAYING ANYTHING BUT FEES AND PENALTIES for be a knucklehead (This is an involuntary offset). It won't stop till you make Voluntary arrangements .   GET IT WHEN YOU DIE... Please!!!  You are stuck with DOE till you die.  Don't blame anyone but yourself for your own shortcomings.  Don't look at anyone but the person in your mirror.. Tired of people calling any bill collector scammers.  ITS CALLED PAY YOUR BILL LIKE YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO AND A BILL COLLECTOR WILL NEVER CALL YOU ANYWAY.... SO RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN..... Notice also your bill get higher even if they take  your taxes dummy.  all the interests and fees for the whole year accumulate.  Try and learn something about being responsible...

These company called my office and (perhaps coincidentally) because I am in the process of refinancing my home they got in touch with the office manager, and asked not only for employement verification but "what kind of employee" I am.  She thought that was strange, I called my lender and was informed that this company is not acting on its behalf.  When I called them back the first thing they asked for was my social...which I did not give them.  Then they got downright rude, would not tell me who they were or what they wanted but worked very hard to keep me on the phone.  In the end I think they got my name and work numbers off the Internet and were looking for someone else.  I thought it was a scam to get my personal info until I saw this listing.  Anyway, rude, unprofessional, and harassing.

Rec'd a call this morning from a Mr. James Mascheri--woke me up--and in a fog I was still able to say, "sorry, you are not getting my SSI number for real....and then contacted my bank to see how to make a payment directly to the Fed Student Loan Corp...I revisisted with Mr Mascheri after I got off the call with the banker who told me how to set a a direct Federal Student Loan Payment/Georgia. When I revisited with Mr. James Mascheri again after the bank conversation and told him what I did instead, he said that my payment would be cashed, but I would probably not get credit for it...then I find this website and realized that this may have been a scam. I had actually confronted him about asking for SSI #'s and he claimed that I was the only person in 20 years who had balked at the idea.....NEVER GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFO TO ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO BE A DEBT COLLECTOR UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY HAVE A HARD COPY IN FRONT OF YOU ABOUT WHO THEY ARE AND THEIR SERVICES AND A VERIFIABLE CONTRACT WITH THE GOVT. FOR DEBT COLLECTION.....ESP. WHEN IT'S FEDERAL AGENCIES INVOLVED. There are very few actual secure phone lines. Period.
This is solid information and should not be ignored....you can only get one SSI# and once it is compromised, you are in trouble fishing for clarity for a very long time and maybe never resolved.......personal info is not on you to give them.....if they are valid, they should have it already and when they also give you the number for the Federal Student Loan Program and ask you to use your SSI# for your account number, it is just a different way of getting information illegally.... go to actual federal agency to verify the contract with "said" contractee....I can only hope that they are not scamming; however, my gut says that they may very well be doing just that. If they are hired by Federal Program, then that Federal Program site will list them.

What a crock, the typical "fear" scam. I had a 5k loan over 25 years ago and paid 10k on it, then decided you are all just a bunch of crooks. It has been disputed since my school refused to return money after I withdrew. Now you sob's are looking for 15k more. Get it when I die.
Go tell the fed to pay their own debts - at 15 trillion, they sure don't lead by example.

Also, your collection process is illegal - you call three times per day and leave messages on my relatives machines. I am filing an FTC complaint with time stamped digital recordings.

There are two basic types of student loans. The first is government backed, the second is private.

If you have a government backed loan it will ALWAYS BE THERE. You can't declare it in a bankruptcy, you can't invoke the statute of limitations on debt to no longer be able to be sued for it.

Private debt IS subject to the SOL on debt. Make sure you know which you have incurred. The government is involved in the collection of all government backed debt, and will have a file number if yours is that type. Google "federal student loans" to get to the site and find out how to search for a file number.

If you don't have a file number, chances are that your debt is private, and IS subject to SOL. Meaning that a 20 year old debt, if no payments have been made on it, cannot be legally sued for.

HOWEVER, if you pay even a dollar, you start the SOL all over again. Before you agree to talk to these scum, find out what's up with your particular loan, find out the last day that a payment was made, and learn your rights in your state with debt that's past the SOL. DON'T pay if it's private and beyond (or very close to) the SOL.

Also, you don't have to let them call you at all. Provide them with an accurate mailing address, send a certified, return receipt letter telling them that "All calls to all phone numbers are inconvenient" and they must, according to the FDCPA, stop calling you or you can sue them.

Michelle just called looking for me. Told her that I wasn't available lol. I also see that a lot of people are getting angry, just talk back to the people and waste their time. Keep them on the line as long as possible. They get credit for getting people to pay the loans, that's why they are so persistent. I once kept a woman on the line for over an hour stalling, then just told her I changed my mind and that the bill is not mine.

I am only 19 and in my second semester of college. I keep getting calls from this number about repaying my student loans, when I don't have to pay them back until 6 months after I am out of school. I explained this to the woman who originally called me, and like everyone else above, she was very rude and even told me that I wouldn't be able to go back to school next semester until I repaid them. The only loans I have out are through my university, so I have no idea where they got my number. I've been receiving calls from them almost every day, and when I ignore them, they leave no voicemail, which I find strange for a debt collector.

This is a complete scam. They pretend to be a collection agency for student loans. They are not. They try to trick you into working through them so they can take a huge cut. They also cussed at me which a real debt colllector cannot do re the Fair Debt Collection Act. They don't care because they are not really a debt collector, they are a scam artist. I don't know who to report them to, they are breaking the law, I talked to my debtor and they assure me they don't know anything about these people and they are not authorized by anyone. I'd like to know how they found out about my student loans in the first place but I assume it's not that hard if you know where to look. Beware--I saw some postings below claiming they were legit which  I assume they are making themselves. They are NOT legit--they are scam artisits.

Stupidly, the first thing they ask you after you get through the automated prompts is for your SS#.  Yeah, right, I 'm going to offer that.  Problem is the call was coming to my 12 year old's phone.  HE may not know never to give your SS# (though I doubt he knows it!  But he could find it in our family papers if he really wanted to).  "Shania" was very cool and understood the situation.  Removed the number (let's hope) from their system, even offered the names of the two individuals they were looking for - not known to us.

but the information has always been available.  20 years ago we went to the LIBRARY for this information.
Most never bothered with it then, too much trouble to look for it on their own

Now we have the internet - and still most refuse to use it as TOOL to protect themselves, instead its just shopping and social media app.  Yet - people still refuse to PROTECT themselves by reading the terms and conditions of ALL Internet offers and Privacy Policies...

After receiving calls and one letter from Progressive Financial, I called them. No one was rude to me but I went through 3 or 4 different representatives at an ascending tier level with the intent of bringing my student loan status back into positive territory. I do indeed have a student loan debt but was surprised to find I was in default. It was my understanding that I had a one year deferral but had, evidently, not completed the paperwork. The loan holder, Direct Loans, had been sending letters to me but at an old address. I never got any of these letters and do not truly know if they were sent or what they contained. I contacted the Dept. of Education after reading many posts about Progressive being a phishing scam. The DOE explained that the loan had indeed been transferred to Progressive. I asked them to take the loan back and that I fully intend to repay the loan, for which I have no regret, I loved my time in college! And am very grateful for the financial aid. After verifying that all was legit, the nice woman I talked to instructed me to contact Progressive and have them explain my options. I did. The first two options were: Pay it off in a lump sum: Not even possible and even laughed and said, "I have to laugh, I would pay it all off if I could but that's so ridiculous an amount to me that I just have to laugh." She didn't yell at me and explained the second option that included paying 1/3 the debt and paying the rest over 3 years: I wish. I'll cut to the chase, After being transferred to the next tier, I was told that nearly all the penalties and fees would be waived and I needed to pay a rather hefty monthly payment for nine months and Direct Loans would take me back and I could even get that 1 year deferment that I thought I was enjoying. I'll post here with any updates as they come but for now, the posts I see do match my experience. If you would like to email me, I am open to correspondence as I too do not trust debt collectors but I do owe and I have no intention of failing to repay my student loan. I'm making this email just for people that want to exchange info on experiences with this company: Agent.Winston.Smith@gmail.com
If things go badly I'll post here, if they go well, I'll post here. Hopefully, everything goes well and this litany of bad stories is just from people that are trying to escape their debts. I especially enjoyed the comment from the person that said the company bought a bad debt! Dude! You're saying you are a bad bet! I will say that the 3rd option was clearly the best one and the first two were dishonestly terrible and probably a psychological trick to make the final deal more appealing. But, like I said, I intend to pay my debt so maybe that's fr people that are hoping to get out of it?
