when I called this number back,  they asked ME what I was calling about.  When I replied that I was returning their call, THEY needed to tell ME what they were calling about, or stop caling altogether..   They didn't ask for any personal info, were able to tell me from the incoming caller ID what it was - collection on a Detroit Edison electric bill on my deceased father's estate.
I asked them to send a bill.   Sounds legit, my father was at the end of his financial rope when he passed

I figure I better pay it - Detroit needs the money more than I do right now.

All she wanted to know was my DOB, address, social security number to verify she was talking to the right person. I told her I wasn't going to give out my info to someone who couldn't tell me who they are calling in regards to. I later said "Fu** You Lady" I cant stand it when you cant get one word into a conversation from these donkeys!

Don't be an a**, collector.  I used to work for a collection agency, and I'll be the first to say that there's no excuse to treat people like dirt, either morally OR legally.

Collection agencies are bound by certain parameters, and harassing and bullying tactics are illegal in most states.  Even if you are trying to collect a debt in another state, you're bound by that state's regulations along with your own state's.  So if you're in a state that doesn't prohibit bullying but trying to collect from a state that does, you are not allowed to bully that person.  AND if you're in a state that doesn't permit it and you're trying to collect from a state that has no laws against it, you're still bound to follow your state's anti-bullying laws.

IF someone tells you not to contact them, they have that right and you are then bound by law to not further contact them.

As for not having the right to just send in payments - that is total bullcrap.  People have a right to not conduct business with a collection agency.  You are hired by YOUR client, not your client's client or customer.  And if the party you are trying to collect from wants to send you as little as $1.00, by law, you are not allowed to refuse it unless you want to consider the debt settled, because legally, if you turn down a payment then you've settled the debt and that party no longer owes it. There is tons of caselaw about that.

People have their right to privacy, and YOU as a collector do NOT have the right to bully or harass anyone.

Pray that you never call my phone number, because I've been known to turn the tables on obnoxious and rude collectors.   I'm always getting phone calls from collectors for people I don't even know, people who had my phone number before me, and they don't like to believe me when I tell them that person isn't here and to take my phone number out of their records.  I've been known to call the collection agency literally every 30 seconds until they remove my number from their records.  One agency got really tired of me calling back and said, "Do you have to call so often?" And I said, "yes.  Now you know what it feels like."  They never called me back after that.

Before I did that, I warned them, and I recorded the warning on tape.  I stated, "If your agency calls this number again then this constitutes permission for me to call your agency repeatedly at my discretion until you remove my number from your records."  Most 800 numbers cost a company quite a bit of money because it's a reverse collect call, so I make sure that I keep the caller on the line as long as I can before I hang up and call them right back again.

Additionally, I dig up their information - the information that they don't want me to have, like the company number that is associated with the 800 number - the number they don't want people to have, along with the owner of that company and I report them to my state's Attorney General along with their state's Attorney General.

I then send a bill for my time and trouble to the collection agency, and when they don't pay up I sue them for the debt plus generous interest as allowed by law and report the owner to all of  the Credit Bureaus.  When they still don't pay I can take them to court for a garnishment or tax interception, or put a lien on their company and sell it out from under them.

I don't stand for this BS and neither should anyone else.  Either you play nice or you'll end up being swallowed up by the likes of angry consumers like me.

I got a call today from this number asking for my mother in law, who doesn't live with us.  She doesn't even live in the same state.  They first asked for her by first name and I didn't even recognize it, so I said it was the wrong number.  Then he stated her full name and I knew it was my mother in law - so I said to hold one minute and told my wife they were asking for her mother.  When I returned to the phone and said she was not there - the man YELLED at me that I must be lying by first saying wrong number then saying she wasn't there.  When I tried to say this was her son in law's number, he cut me off and berated me for lying and trying to scam him.  He shouted "what kind of scam are you trying to pull here?  Where is she?".  He didn't even give me a chance to answer before continuing on some long tirade.  I hung up the phone.  This company is unbelievable!

You are absolutely full of crap.  If this company is legit, they have failed to train their people in ethics and compliance with Federal laws and state laws.

No collection company has the right to abuse anyone.

I have collected for 26 years, and yes firmness is required, but insults, lies and humiliation is not needed and is LESS effective in collecting, than treating people with reasonable respect.

Just dont answer the phone.  They are going to sell the debt to another agency anyway.  Even if you request it in writing the same outcome will occur.  Seriously, if you are getting these calls you probably have other debt as well.  Get in line is what I usually say.  Do you know anyone who wants to be getting these calls???  I know they are doing their jobs but do yourself a favor and dont answer the phone if its someone you want to talk to they can leave a message.  Or get an extra line put in and just turn the ringer off on the line they are calling on.

The people who work at this company are JERKS and I WILL NEVER pay any money to people who talk to me like I am an idiot!  Ill wait for them to sell the debt to the next agency before I pay it.  I wont allow this kind of company that employs A**holes to profit.  I dont see how any respectable company would hire these people.  And by the way, they arent doing their jobs, unless their jobs are to be pricks.  Say whatever you want, Your obviously one of them and therefore your opinions, observations, and clever quips mean nothing to me.

I received a call at my office at 936AM from 800-530-3945 today, April 23, 2009.  A man, whose name was audibly muffled, left a voice mail message indicating the purpose of the call was to collect a debt.  When I returned the call, no one had any record of either my name or my office number.   I spoke with a young lady then her supervisor, a young man.  Both were courteous in response to my expressing how that the handling of my return call was very inconvenient as I did return the call as requested but no one could find any record of it having been made in the first place.  They seemed to be looking for information rather attempting to collect a debt.  This sounds very fishy....

When you're in collection status, you don't dictate the terms of how you pay.  Per your cardholder agreement, when you go into delinquent status, the balance in full is due.  FAMS takes check by phone, credit, debit, or bankwire.  Of course you can't just mail in payments, you lost that opportunity when you stopped paying your bill.  This is a legit collection agency, they are doing their jobs.  Maybe all you debtors out there should try doing the same..

I just switched phone numbers and I keep getting calls from 800 530 3908.... considering the fact that Im a 21 year old college student with absolutely no bills or debt I can only assume they're calling for the person who previously had this number. However, its not the fact that they're calling me that bothers me but they just breath into the phone and hang up. I called them back and told them I was getting called and the man hung up on me. This is nuts! I dont know why these people are calling me, they need to get their stuff straight.

My former neighbor, a elderly woman, got a call from the same #, 800.530.3908 ext. 2115, some woman by the name of Jema, or Tema regarding an alleged debt my daughter owes. My daughter has not lived with us, for years, and we moved away from that town 6 years ago. Now I get a call from this poor old woman THAT A DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY CALLS ABOUT MY DAUGHTER AS WAS ABUSIVE TO HER. People do not have to take this. I reported the number/name/extension to the prosecutors office and the local police department from that town. How audacious!

They called me every day at around 8AM for at least two months with an automated calling program.  The program was defective--it started in at the middle, and asked for someone who was not me.  I tried to call back to correct them but kept getting just an answering machine.  finally a real person called me and it got corrected.

This was a major inconvenience to me and I am looking into investigating them, reporting them to the FTC, and seeing if the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act stops their behavior.  they woke me up not only on weekdays but on weekends...and sometimes called several times a day!
