I have received 3-calls from the same number and they say that they are American Express. Unfortunately, I am not behind on my payments and AMEX said they did not call.

This number is for American Express Returned Payments. It is real. if you are ever concerned with the validity of a phone number calling you call the number on the back of the card. The automated system should route you into the department that is trying to reach you.

We keep getting calls from 800-542-0999 morning, noon and night which we don't pick up thinking it is a telemarketer.  They are even calling on the weekend.  We finally picked up the call and they said nothing at the other end of the line.

Yep, every morning I've been getting these calls about I need to contact AmEx right. I never do. I figured this was a scam. When AmEx wants to contact me they email, not call.

I don't have AMEX card. This is a scam. I was sent 2 $500.00 Amex checks from a fraudulent work at home scam. They were perfect but not worth a stamp to put on a letter. When I did not deposit and send $800.00 of the grand to some creep via money gram a broken english  speaking p.o.s. called me and told me I had to send the money that day. I told him he had the wrong number. Had the checks been real, the law would have been busting my door down that same day. I am 70+ but have seen too many games and can smell one a mile off.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

Got a call from 800-542-0999, but I didn't pick up because I was at work.  They left no voicemail.  I googled the number and people said it *might* be from AMEX card services.

I call the number on the back of the card during lunch and the AMEX rep said the number is legit.  If you don't trust the number listed here, then just call the number on the back of the card.  You'll get to AMEX either way.

Got a call that started out by saying, "This is not a telemarketing call." Said it was from American Express and they wanted me to call 1-800-542-0999. Well, I live alone and do not have an American Express card, nor do I have any other busniess with them. These people Google their own phone numbers then make posts claiming the numbers are legitimate. Don't fall for it.

Number is legit. Ignored the voicemail the automated system left for a day or two. Got a call from AMEX today (Arizona area). There was indeed a returned payment due to a typo in my bank routing #. I verified this online prior to revealing any personal information. It's funny that they always ask you all these security questions and you never think that this could be someone collecting exactly THOSE missing details to a stolen credit card number. I should have a way of making sure a caller from my bank, credit card company, etc. is who they say they are. ;-)

I use AMEX for my business and for the last three days I have received a recorded messages stating that there is a problem with my card account.  This morning an actual person called my office and asked for me specifically, when the gentleman was asked to leave a message he just hung up.

Received calls from this number.  Comes up unavailable on caller id  just the number  1-800-542-0999.  Left no message.  Am on do not call registry.  Also, if this is American Express trying to reach you like some of your state, be aware they are using other numbers and areas.  I have a couple of them already.  The numbers and states are:
Arizona -  1-623-492-1073;     North Carolina  1-336-393-1006   this is what comes up on caller id

When I picked up the phone one time, the guy on the other end threatened me.  This was a previous call.
Am going to report them to the FTC.

Caller claimed to be from SAS Fire & Security Systems. They mentioned a survey but they sounded suspicious and when I asked for their number they gave me 0800 542 0999.  For more info go to Google "SAS Fire & Security Scam"  The company is well known and based in Stockport.  No known connection with American Express.

Yep -- that's exactly the right approach.  It could be a legitimate inquiry regarding the improper use of your card, so simply contact the credit card company directly using the customer service number on the back of the card.

I received a call on my cell phone from 800.542.0999 asking for someone else.  I told the person they had the wrong number and hung-up.  I got to work and saw they had also called my work number but did not leave a message.  Then I received several more calls from them but did not pick-up.  Each time they did not leave a message.  I looked online and found that it might be a scam.

I called American Express and told them what happened.  They said that the number is not in their database.  However, the representative said it could be a third party selling other related services and that would not be considered fradulent.  She also said that it may be fradulent and to not give any of my information to them.  She said she would bring notify the appropriate people at American Express so they can investigate it.

She said to always use the number of the back of your card to contact American Express.

I just received a call from "American Express" regarding a $183 automatic payment on "my gold card" that was returned due to NSF. I don't use a gold card. He said that I banked with Ameriprise. If I did, I'm sure the payment wouldn't be returned. My caller ID showed 623-492-6031. I told the caller that I would check my records and return his call. He gave me the number 800-542-0999. When I researched the 800 number, I was led to this site.

Received a call from CID 623-492-6031 saying they were American Express and to call 800-542-0999 with my card number ready.

I called American Express using the number on the back of my card, and American Express stated that the 800-542-0999 number is NOT with American Express.

Got the same call and decided to check online. Guess I should call the number on the back of the card, although it seemed fishy since we never use that card.
