You people have been constantly calling a dear friend of mine who is elderly and 80 years old. You are really upsetting her. Her number is 218-326-3014. If your 800-600-9030 number shows up on her caller ID again, you will be reported to law enforcement and we will file harrassment charges. Shame on you guys!!! Shame on you!! she has been called early in the morning and after 9pm at night when she is asleep!!

Some charities “take advantage of American generosity,” said Bennett Weiner, an executive with the Better Business Bureau research program Wise Giving Alliance. They “accomplish very little, siphon off good money from the community and tarnish the well for more legitimate nonprofits.”

By donating to inefficient charities, said Daniel Borochoff, president of the American Institute of Philanthropy, “you are taking money out of the mouth of a hungry kid.”

Urgent accounts

“Where are the children? Where did they go?” a child’s mournful voice sings on the website of Operation Lookout – National Center for Missing Youth. “Are they held captive or do they run free? … Oh, where can they be?”

The group’s online, telemarketing and door-to-door outreach materials offer urgent accounts of runaways or kidnapping victims – and equally urgent pleas for cash.

Commercial firms reported having raised more than $6 million for Operation Lookout, based in Everett, Wash., since 1999. Less than $1 million reached the charity.

A current contract between the fundraiser and the charity sets a minimum 15% return on donations. In practice, over the years, 15% has been the maximum. In each year from 2000 to 2006, it received exactly 15% – not a penny more or less – of funds collected in its name by commercial fundraiser Midwest Publishing.

Operation Lookout did not respond to requests for comment.

The charity has posted a defense of its fundraising on its website, blaming accounting requirements for distorting its results: “In some instances, accounting rules require that we combine volunteer recruitment, calls to action and public education making them appear as a ‘fundraising’ expense.”

Neither of the nation’s two major accounting standards bodies has ruled that such costs must be combined.

Based on tax returns and other sources, the American Institute of Philanthropy ferrets out hidden costs of fundraising by charities – including but not limited to commercial campaigns. It estimated that Operation Lookout spent 84 cents to raise each dollar in its 2006 budget of $2.1 million, a worse record than all but 18 of more than 500 rated charities.

The philanthropy institute normally considers up to 35 cents to raise a dollar as a reasonable cost.

The Times analysis of commercial campaigns in California found inefficiency to be typical among missing-child groups: On average more than 85 cents per dollar went to the fundraiser.

However, some charities of this kind eschew commercial fundraisers, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Ernie Allen, its chief executive, said groups that rely on minuscule returns taint the entire field.

Patty Wetterling co-founded the Jacob Wetterling Foundation in 1990, after her 11-year-old son was kidnapped at gunpoint. Jacob has not been found.

“Missing children’s organizations spring up out of crisis,” she said. “Fundraisers exploit these devastating situations.”

But groups shouldn’t allow themselves to be overcharged by fundraisers over and over, she said. They “need to learn.”

I received a call from this number today and a woman said  "did you hear Sunday night's commentary on India"  (or something like that).  The she said it again and said my husband's name and I said "who's calling please?" and she hung up.  Too weird.  I live in MO.  Is this just happening in this state?

A contract between Michigan-based TeleService USA and the veterans charity VietNow makes donor lists "the exclusive property" of the fundraiser. If the charity switches fundraisers, it would lose access to past supporters -- the most likely future donors.
TeleService USA, which delivered to its clients, on average, 11 cents per dollar raised, did not respond to requests for an interview.

There are no replies for this topic.

Woke me the morning of Jan 20, 2009 but hung up before I could tell them not to call again.  I called them back.  There was a sound as though I had called a fax machine.  I called again and an answering machine voice told me to leave my phone number if I wanted to be removed from their call list.

After reading your comments, I called Teleservice back and told them I can't feel good about making a donation based on my inability to verify the information they are providing and I wanted to cancel my envelope and donation. "Mike" took my number and was polite.  Let's see what happens.

I received eight calls for 800-600-9030 on 3/03/09 and two so far on 3/04/09.  As everyone else has said caller left no message and when I answered there was no one there.  However, the last call I received on 3/03/09, which I answered, there was whispering and breathing on the other end.  This morning (3/04/09) there was, on the answering machine, blowing into the receiver very loud.  I, too, got the 248 number from Sherri's post; called them to report what was happening.  They checked their call list and could find no record of calls coming from the 800 number to my number on the above dates (they are all my caller log list). Yhey graciously removed my name from their list and told me to call back if I get any more calls.

I worked for them and companys like them. People need to understand that the people who are actually on the phone  (me). are using a computer, its an automated dialer that calls at the minimum 500 people a day at random. We don't know who you are. And we are not scam artists, we raise alot of money for our charities, and in this economy, this kind of job hires hundreds and hundreds of people in just one facility, creating alot of jobs. We do not choose a specific time to bug you, we work for hours on end, it is not that strategic! and we call back when there is no answer because thats a job requirement if you don't answer we have to code the call as "no answer" so you can be reached later, so you are better off not ignoring the call. and there is someone on the phone wheny ou answer, there is just a delay in the phone, not the person on the phones fault, they can't heear you when you first say hello. but they are there.

The owner of TeleService is Diane (Dee) Cahillane.  Teleservice "raises" money for a vairety of non-profit organizations - everything from veteran's groups to cancer support groups.  It's a scam.  Less than 15% of the money you donate goes to the actual charity.  The reason you get many calls from the same 800# is because if you donate to one, they "tap" your telephone number and call it on all their other programs as well.  So, you'll get MANY calls from a variety of different charities, but 87% of your donations go to Diane and team.  Diane lives in Clawson, MI - in a nice home, drives a nice car, had a condo in Florida, and takes vacations often.  I don't know how her and her employees sleep at night using the stories of sick children to gain pennies in their pocket.

They can be found at 1055 W. Maple Suite C Clawson, MI 48017 - 248-655-2400.  She is also now running a grocery purchasing franchise (WeGetGroceries.com), and trying to prey on the sick, elder community.  She should be ashamed of herself!

She said "that doesn't help with the cost to the patient". I told her i did not want to donate at this time and she was very nasty - said "i guess helping those in need is not important to you!"

I constantly get calls for donations to various "charities" from 800-600-9030. Got one today, and when I tried to explain to the woman that I am in no financial position to be donating, she hung up on me. Bad move. I hate that. I tracked them down at 248-655-2400 and asked if that was where the 800-600-9039 calls originated. The lady indicated that it was indeed where the calls originate. Kind lady asked if I wanted my number removed from their data base. I said, yes I do! And explained about the rude hang up of earlier in the day. She apologized and said she would look up who made the call to my number and report it. There you go, call them and tell them to go to hell.

Google "teleservice usa." This a professional fundraising service for charities, hence not subject to Do Not Call regulations. They appear to give no more than 15% to the charity (according to the CA attorney general's report). They also appear to have violated state laws many times over the years for things like misrepresentation, etc.

I've had dozens of calls from this number.  Several times I've answered and told them not to call back.  They've called every day for the past week, plus many, many times before.  They just called again and I told them AGAIN not to call and the girl said, "This is the first time I've called."  I told her that number had called dozens of times.

Even though I asked to be put on the do not call list with these people yesterday, today my Caller ID showed that they called again.  This is frustrating.  I then called 248.655.2400 and got a cleaning lady.  I will call tomorrow during business hours and ask to speak to a manager.

Received at least one call from this number this morning.  No message left.  There is a cheap and efficient way to minimize and eliminate unsolicited phone calls, or any other calls you do not want to take.  Radio Shack sells a device that allows you to block up to 20 numbers.  It costs about $30.  It includes caller ID and call rejecting.  If you choose, you can let your phone ring until an answering machine/voice mail picks up.  Or, even better, you can set the device to play an automated message that tells the caller that the number they have called will not accept their call.  Trust me, once they get that deadend message a few times they move on.  The best $30 I ever spent!
