They called me today and wanted to talk to someone I don't know (probably the former user of my phone number). They apologized and hung up. They may try to recover really old debts because I use this number for over four years. :-)

i'm tired of these a***oles, but i wont give them the time of day. Anything "800" or "888" on your phone is usually no good.

Thank you everybody for sharing your story with us. It is always creepy to get these calls, and wonder...So now that I know its just some scam I feel better just hanging up.

ARC, recovery agency trying to revive an old debt (even if it doesn't exist) and get any amount of money from you.
They sometimes send letters too pretending that you owe X to a baffoon company you never heard of. That company usually buys old debts and are trying to revive them even when the time makes them void. Depending on the state or province, it can be 4, 6 or 10 years. After that, there is no legal way they can ask money for a phone bill (example).
Unless you give them something, anything or you aknowledge that you owe them something. DO NOT EVER DO THAT... in fact, do not even talk to them.
They will almost never give you any kind of proof that you owe something except what they pretend on their paper wich is not enough legally.
They will almost never give you the whole story. Unfortunatly for them, they are trying to get money from my mother for a so-called old phone-bill... but my mother never had the phone on her name.
You can send a "Cease and Desist" fax and they have the obligation to stop communicating with you but that's only good for 3 months from what I read.
The next best thing is to file a report at your local police and send it to them or something (don't remember the details exactly, will research that.)

Small note: if you see that caller id (when it's not hidden), if you don't say anything when answering, you won't hear anything. If you say "Hello", their automatic machine will be triggered and you'll get the usual message to call them back with a reference number.

They call all the time. I never call back as they don't identify themselves. They give a reference number but as i don't know them they can continue calling I won't call back.
I got my DID IP phone number from http://callcentric.com, the guy who had it before must have debt but it's none of my business. They can continue calling, I will continue ignoring them
:-(

It is ARC, revocery agency, they don't leave message until... a few months actually. And when you call them back to tell them you want written contact instead of phone calls, they keep calling back!
