I received a letter with this phone number, for my son that is brain damaged and disabled due to car accident 8 yrs ago.,claiming it is the Dept of Treasury and they are threatening to garnish his pitifully already impoverished disability.
I have contacted the local congressman's office, they have sent me a form to fill out and have the doctor fill it out called  forgiveness letter.
Of course I have done this several times already, creditors just keep selling the collection off to someone else.
I hope they cant garnish him, though,he cant afford to live and eat now,I have to work to subsidize his living expenses as it is.I'm a 60 yr old widow and he is a 39  year old man child, unable to take care of himself and they have badgered me for 8 yrs for this 5000.00 school loan, there ought to be a law against harassing disabled people and their families.

I have been expecting to see a huge class action lawsuit to stop these practices for years. The Texas, TSLGA seems to farm out everything out of state, and changes the loan servicers every 6 months, so nothing ever stays in one place long enough for errors to ever get fixed, in fact it seems to add to the errors, almost on purpose in my opinion. Somebodies pockets at the collection agencies and banks is getting lined and we are getting fleeced!

Their accounting systems are a joke!

Never understood why they don't do their own collections in house?

Hack, maybe you are not educated and you and your friend below who are advising people to pay there billd and slandering consumers. First, look at the economy, things happen. Second, if anything goes into collections and the original collector or debtor sells the information. Then you will recieve the calls until you have it resolved.

In addition, if they do not have the original paper work, the collector. They don't hava a leg to stand on. Just ask them if they can provide a copy of the original paper work you signed, then maybe the collectors are in the right, if not....Take people like Hack and tell em to shove there ego

Collectors trying to receive payment on a loan paid off over 18 years ago.  They are not helpful in resolving issues.  You can send in a complaint, and they will acknowledge it in about 6-8 weeks (internally) but they can't say when or if they will make a decision anytime soon.  I paid this loan off 22 years ago, and never had any attempt at further collection until this year, when they took my tax refund as an offset.  When asked why they hadn't done anything in all these years, if I actually owed them the money, Pat Smith (i'm sure not her real name), said they didn't have to.  They can collect it anytime they want.  She wanted me to provide proof from two decades ago showing I made the payment.  That is going to be difficult.  My bank is no longer in business, due to the loan fraud situation that existed in Texas at that time.  I told her that even the IRS doesn't expect you to hold on to copies of your return for more than seven years, unless there is a problem.  Her Response was, >>>We're not the IRS!<<<  This is a racket, and as long as the Department of Education continues to contract out work to shady collection agencies, we are all screwed.  There is no reasoning with them, because all they want is money, whether it is due them or not, and our government doesn't care either as long as they get their cut.  This is why people get fed up with our government representation.
