I was given this number by CitiBank Customer Service because my card number was involved in a hack.  They were able to pull off a bunch of my in-person purchases in the last week.

LEGIT number.

Didn't answer so they left a message telling me they are from citi's early detection and that I should call back. What raised my suspicion is that they called me mr. Ram Morrison Wothery which is not my name. I called citi and inquired if there is any early warning and they said there isn't.

You should *always* call the number on the back of your card.

I disagree. You should *always* call the number on the back of your card.

DITTO:
So today I received a letter from Citibank with this number: 800 647 5344 saying they'd been unable to contact me by phone.  Looked completely valid so I called in and sure enough, I got Citibank.  Heather was able to rattle off purchases that were of concern.

I let her know about the original incident.  She did have trouble finding the note on my account, and we discussed that's probably why when my Citibank rep called first time around (I had called through the website #), they said they didn't find anything.

So, this number IS VALID.  The smartest thing is to make sure anyone calling can verify information before you share any.

Happy Holidays!

It is legit... got a letter from that department today.. and since I was apprehensive, I just called my bank branch. and they connected with that department.. you can also call the regular citibank 1800 number, they will be able to tell you if a letter was sent out to you or not.

OK, here's the deal before the sheep get really panicked for no good reason.

The number 800-647-5344 is legit, and is NO fraud.  When you call Citibank, they might not recognize the number, because they don't have it on the system, but they would transfer you to the Fraud Early Warning Unit, who would confirm that number and discuss the issue with you (usually, an out of the ordinary charge that triggered the system).

Don't ignore their call, since while the extraordinary charge you have made, might have gone through, your account would probably be put on hold, so further charges would be rejected.  You would probably still be able to make ATM withdrawals, since that's the debit card part of your credit card, and it might not be affected by the hold.

If you have a CallerID, you would see a different number (in my case 888-248-4226), which is Citibank's calling center.

Bottom line: 800-647-5344 is legit, and don't let any ignorant sheep scare you!  Call them to avoid unnecessary interruption to your card usage, since once they initiated a call, your credit card is probably on hold for future charges, till they release it!

Also just got a call with same background asking me to call back 800 647 5344.
Instead I called the citibank # on the back of my card, 888 248 4465. They were not sure whether the 800 number was one of theirs, but confirmed that my ATM card had indeed been compromised. For what it's worth...

Follow up - spouse called Citibank, they do not have this number in their system. It is DEFINITELY A SCAM and they are reporting it to their fraud dept. They even tried to use a number close to the Citibank numbers.

Identified themselves as Ruzanna from Citibank. Asked for my spouse and then asked my name and said they could talk to me. She stated they had been alerted of a scanning device being attached to somewhere that she couldn't divulge because it was an ongoing criminal investigation, and that we were to call this number and ask for option #1 and then tell the representative to block the card and re-issue a new one. I asked and they said the card was not used, only compromised and that they new his oin number. She never asked me for any information other than my first name. I called my spouse and then looked up citibanks phone numbers and did not locate this number, had no intention of calling it anyway, but gave him citibanks real number as well as this number so he could ask them directly if this is a number in their system. I'll post back as to what happens next.
