To resolve Federal Trade Commission charges, one of the nation?s largest debt collectors will pay $1.75 million for allegedly making repeated telephone calls to collect from the wrong person, to collect the wrong amount, or both. The settlement is the second largest civil penalty obtained by the FTC in a debt collection case.
?Debt collectors had better make sure their information is accurate, or they could end up paying a big penalty,? said David Vladeck, Director of the FTC?s Bureau of Consumer Protection. ?There is no excuse for trying to collect debt from someone if you can?t confirm that they actually owe it.?
According to the FTC?s complaint, between 2006 and at least 2008, Allied Interstate, Inc. continued collection efforts even after consumers told the company they did not owe the debt, without verifying the accuracy of the disputed information. Allied is a Minnesota corporation that works out of offices in the United States, Canada, India, and the Philippines. The company also allegedly made improper harassing phone calls to consumers, using abusive language or calling many times a day for weeks or months, sometimes hanging up when the calls were answered. In addition, the complaint charges that Allied made repeat calls to third parties seeking to locate a consumer, revealed alleged debts to third parties without the consumers? consent or court permission, and threatened legal action against consumers it did not intend to take. The complaint alleges that these practices violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.

For these kinds of calls, I just press the # key repeatedly after I pick up the phone. They always stop calling after that.

I have received several annoying calls from this number and in checking on the internet, I see it is a bogus phone number. I have been on the Do Not Call List and still receive these calls. They should be fined whoever it is.

We live in a NYC apartment building with commercial space on the ground floor. 800-652-7533 Allied Interstate keeps calling us asking for a business dba name that used to occupy the downstairs space. That business went under more than 2 years ago and had nothing at all to do with us except for a shared building address.
How dare they incessantly disturb completely unconnected building tenants? Evidently they've done some reverse lookup on the address and now consider us to be "fair game" in their unethical, possibly illegal, and definitely harassing pursuits.
Allied Interstate are about as low as it gets. If they keep it up we'll be happy to sue them.
wendy 2011-06-06 20:58:12 Unknown
they left a message for me saying they were looking for information related to a death! That really crosses the line!!!
Michael 2011-06-06 20:58:12 Unknown
Yes, I get daily calls on my voice mail from this company. I reported them to the FCC site and I got back a response that stated there was 'insufficent information' to make a claim.
andrew 2011-06-06 20:58:12 Unknown
I also get daily calls, and I have no debts. I checked my credit report and there is nothing reported as unpaid.
Rozie 2011-06-06 20:58:12 Unknown
Yes, I have the same issue with these people, they are leaving automated messages claiming that they are calling regarding a debt.

My mother (who is a nursing home) keeps getting calls left on her home phone answering machine from these people. I know she has no debts, so they are phishing. When you call back an automated voice says "thank you for calling the business office" please hold. I only called to get info to be able to report them to someone.

Every day they call and leave a recorded message saying to call because of a debt. I have none. When I called back and asked if they ever heard of the "do not call registry," the person told me to stop giving her attitude...I'll give her attitude....

I never respond to any 800 incoming calls, but, the first time this one, 800-652-7533 came in, I made a returned call late at night on a weekend to learn from their voice message that they are Allied something Collection. We've recently had a credit report done, and my credit is sterling. Anyone have an idea when they cease making calls? I've been getting calls 2-3 times a day for about 3 weeks.

This was a nuisance robocall--I assume trying to drum up money for something.
It's very annoying, because I dialed *69 to find who is was, so will now end up with
a fee on my phonebill for using the *69 service. If this is about car insurance, it's
doubly annoying, as I don't have a car. These people should be stopped.
