someone with a thick accent called saying that I owe 1200$ to VISA and that they are willing to settle for 700$ today, and that they need my banking details
funny thing is, is that I have never owned a VISA credit card, only a Mastercard
this is a scam

I have repeatedly been getting calls from this number asking for a person who does not live here. I keep telling them that I don't know the person they are looking for and to please stop calling but, they don't.

Same as above. Got this call this morning, just dead air at the other end.

They left a message for me at my work number. Called them back and it was American Express. It seems to be legit because they knew when my last transaction was. However, they didn't know why someone had called - no emergency. I asked them not to call me at work and they couldn't fulfill that request.

I inherited a cell phone from a former employee of our company. Lately this 800 number keeps calling me and I keep telling them that the person no longer works for the company and I inherited his phone number. We did a reverse number look up and it's Amex. Then they hang up on me and an hour or two later it starts back up. As this is being used for business, my boss is going to get involved if it keeps up.

The way to deal with it:
Step 1: Call this number back from a pay phone (no charge).
Step 2: Keep whoever answers for as long as possible until she/he is so annoyed and hangs up.
Step 3: Call the number again--repeat Steps 1 and 2.
If we all do this, we can shut it down.

I got hundreds of calls from this number--extremely annoying.
My way to get back to them: call them from from a pay phone (no charge) and keep whoever answers on the phone for as long as possible--until he/she is so annoyed that she hangs up. Then I call them again, just to annoy them.
If everyone does this, we can shut them down.

So I used a pay phone to call back (no charge). It is American Express call centre. They keep calling me even though I'm not an Am. Ex. card holder.

Called 3x this week and twice yesterday. The second time they actually left a message! They said something about "we have a special offer from Amex for you." Yeah right. If they really had a special offer it would be something like "you can charge as much as you like, Amex will pay for it" or "we're a rich conglomerate and have too much $, we're no longer greedy and we're giving it all away to you."

It is really really annoying ! ..They call every f****ng day on my cell phone since last week and i just dont answer. I'm really glad too there is a site like this out there for people to voice there opinions.
I think the best thing to do is to call your phone provider to block that phone numer, thats what i'm going to do today.
Caller ID: 800-668-6500
Caller: Amex, they said.

I've gotten a number of dead air calls as well. This is likely a telemarketing promotion as dead air usually means a automated dialer. They switch to a service rep if they detect a human voice but there is often a lag resulting in the "dead-air" effect. The don't really call cell-phone numbers per se. they call a sequence of numbers more or less at random and try to sell to whoever answers the phonewhich is why these calls occur on unpublished numbers be they cellular or POTS.

I've received fewcalls today in a matter of few hours from this number. It was just dead air, . I am not an easily bothered person and Im calm/polite by nature but enough is enough! Im really glad there is a site like this out there for people to voice there opinions. I see that some say its American Express, which I do not own one, nor have ever owned one. This is my cell phone number as well so who knows where they got my number as its unlisted here in Canada where I reside

8006686500 keeps calling me from 7 in the morning, every hour on the hour. It's Amex trying to get me to pay up! Too bad they cut off my limit and raised my fees and interest until I couldn't pay it anymore. Now they're out of luck. Unfortunately I have to either turn off my phone (my only communication with my children!) or be woken up during the night, harassed all day, etc. And they never speak to me when I answer, anyway! GRRRR!
Why don't phones have a "block current caller" option? Don't we have the technology yet to block incoming phone numbers? Or are we not allowed to have such amazing advancements and therefore must be harassed at companies' whims?
Ben 2011-06-06 20:58:13 Unknown
I phoned the number back, and it is AMEX. The reason why people get dead air when they answer is that AMEX uses an automatic dialer, and it takes them a minute to pick up the phone after someone answers. It seems to me that these automatic dialers are common among cold-callers. Therefore, if I don't get an answer right away, I quickly hang up, knowing that they will come on in a minute to bug me.
midtown 2011-06-06 20:58:13 Unknown
It is Amex. I thought it was a scam because they called saying I was in arrears when I new that was not correct. I am afraid I was a tad profane with the gent, told him not to call back and that I only was ever contacted by Amex by mailand then hung up on him, as I was sure it was a fraud.
After reading this site and finding out it WAS AMEX called them and found that they posted the payment to the wrong account. Not only was I not in arrears, I had a credit! Oh, and I did apologize for my language on the previous call. Live and learn.

Panasonic has a call block feature on a number of their cordless phones. Works great and you don't have to subscribe\pay for that service with your phone company.

I did what you did once and guess what... they sent my "case" to an agency! Bell was billing me for my cell phone every month which I had never asked, I was buying prepaid cards on my own! Finally, I had to pay ... $1000 the guy from the agency seemed well aware of the AMEX way to get you into trouble...those things can ruin your reputation!
Guy 2011-06-06 20:58:13 Unknown
I picked up the phone and there was nobody there. Then it rang again and I assumed it was some idiot so I picked it up and started to curse them out and then hung up. Last month I had a credit on my bill and I was told not to pay anything as they'd over-billed me. I cannot imagine what they'd be phoning about.
Guy 2011-06-06 20:58:13 Unknown
They called again and some stupid b***h left a message to call. It's Amex all right. Like I said, last month I had a credit. I have prepaid paying with a bunch of places and I just switched them over to Visa. Kiss my a**.

This number continually calls my cell asking for someone other then myself. I have told them they have wrong number. Continue to call and leave hang ups on my answering machine which is costing me money!

This number called my home and my office yesterday and they left me a message with this number to call them back. I called and with those machine instruction that press 1 for English then came to ask me to enter my AE card number and PIN number. It was weird that I have to key in these information before talking to a real person so I hanged up. I suspect that due to we are using the chip technology for cards now and this maybe one of the ways to steal you security codes.
