This is a legit automated fraud number for Navy Federal credit card account; however, best practice is to call back the number on your card or the number on their website (this number doesn't even show up in their search result). So no need to reply to this saying I support scammers. Take away two things as factual:
(1) This number IS 100% legit
(2) DON'T call it back, because that should NOT be a habit you make with your personal information (calling unknown numbers). Navy FCU customer service operators are not only super friendly, but they are capable of taking care of what you would have by calling that automated number and forward the details on to the fraud department. Peace of mind is invaluable.

Missed 2 calls that were supposedly from NFCU and got a voicemail.  The voicemail told me to call the number in question.  When I called, I got an automated message asking for my phone number.  I put it in, assuming it was standard procedure and was then put on hold.  A representative (Whitney) picked up a couple of minutes later.  She then asked me for my Access number, User ID, or SSN (I asked if it was just the last 4, but she wanted the whole number) to verify my account.  I hung up.

I received the same automated message as others have described and they left me voicemails twice within a 5 hour period. It is confirmed as a SCAM by NFCU. my NFCU rep sent their head of security the details of the number that they called me from (probably a spoofed number since it came up as a Honda dealership in Naples, FL) and they also reported this 800 number to NFCU security. Anyone below who says this is a legit NFCU fraud call probably represents the scammers trying to convince others to call the 800 number.  Don't do it and report it immediately to the phone number on the back of your card.

Event Reminder
The 800-704-8950 number is a direct line to the Navy Federal's credit card fraud department.

I attempted to make a $400 purchase at Walmart with my NFCU Visa and even with a zero balance on the card, the purchase was declined.  I had to pay it with my NFCU debit card.

After I paid for my merchandise, I was about to call the NFCU from the number on the back of the card when I received a text message from the NFCU. Even with the text message, I called the number on the back of the card and the problem with the card being declined was resolved. It all had to do with a lot of fraudulent activity going on.

Not only did they text my celephone, but when I got home, I had a voice mail on my Ooma. It instructed me to call the 800-704-8950 number regarding the problem I had that morning. So, I again called the number on the back of the card, 888-842-6328. I spoke to the fraud department and basically verified what happened this morning.

I asked the agent about the 800-704-8950 number on my voice mail and she did in fact confirm it was a direct line to the NFCU fraud department.

Like everyone else, I too was skeptical, that's why we have 800notes period com. I use it a lot to see who called me.

To elaborate on my post above: A little later after I posted I received another automated call from NFCU, but from their REGULARLY listed number, 888 842 6328. In this call, it was phrased a little different, asking for me <press 1> or my wife <press 2>. It referenced the purchase, etc. This call was more specific than the first call in it's preliminary phrasing. So, I followed the prompts and confirmed the purchase. Not sure why this one came from the listed phone number. Maybe because I called in my query.

Had a call from 800-704-8950 pretty much right after I made an online purchase with a credit card. The number IS an NFCU phone number, though not one that is listed. I called Navy to verify, using the 888-842-6328 listed NFCU number. Spoke with a representative who checked the account and said, yes, there was a call made from Navy subsequent to the purchase because of some problems with people stealing card numbers, then buying gift cards, etc., from certain stores. This purchase happened to be from Pottery Barn and this is one store that has been getting hit with fraudulent purchases. I assured him that I had made the purchase and that the phone call came pretty quickly afterwards. So, in this case, all was good. But, he reminded me that if there was any doubt as to the veracity of a call, be sure to call the main number and talk to a rep.

Legit NFCU fraud number, although people are right in saying that you should only use NFCU's listed phone numbers (on your card or their website).

Got a call from an 888 number saying to call this number back.  Called the number on the back of my credit card (same as the 888 number that originally called) and found that it was indeed the NFCU fraud department.  I had been afraid it was a pharming/phishing scheme but evidently not.

800notes is an anonymous forum and there was no one at 800notes door to check that Beth's claims are factually true before 800notes let Beth post. Since there is no way to verify that Beth speaks the truth, Beth's claims are nothing but ALLEGATIONS. Beth's ALLEGATIONS do not prove this is a legit number. The only people who can benefit from Beth's ALLEGATIONS are SCAMMERS who will steal your account and personal info followed shortly by your money and ID. SCAMMERS will even weave good responses like "I called the 1-888 number on the back of my card, though, to take care of it" into their SHILL posts but this correct instruction is just a PROP to help "prove" that this number is a legit NFCU number (and it is NOT). SCAMMERS are desperate to have potential victims believe they are talking to the real NFCU on this number (and victims are NOT) and give away their account and ID info (and victims should NOT).

800-704-8950 is not listed as a NFCU contact number  https://www.navyfederal.org/contact-us.php
1.  SCAMMERS post LIES on 800notes to convince potential victims that this is a legit number (and it is NOT).
2.  CallerID is *NOT* a trusted source for legit numbers  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing
3.  If 800-704-8950 calls you, DON'T answer or give away any info.
4.  NEVER call 800-704-8950 back or ANY bank number supplied by a stranger.
5.  If you need to call your bank, use a number from a TRUSTED SOURCE (back of card, bank statement, website, phone book)

I received a call from this number, also saying it was NFCU Fraud department.  I didn't return the call, but checked my account online.  There was very definitely a fraudulent purchase on our account.  I called the 1-888 number on the back of my card, though, to take care of it.

THIS IS A SCAM.  The MO is as follows:

1.  The SCAMMERS must first convince victims that this number is a legit fraud prevention number (and it is NOT). This point is vital for their SCAM and they will never give up on this. They do this by writing FALSE posts on anonymous forums like 800notes (anonymous means there is no way to confirm or deny what they FALSELY say) that urge potential victims to call the number and/or tell of horrible FALSE events that befell the FALSE posters when they failed to call.

2.  In the usual scam, the SCAMMERS pretend to be the Fraud Dept. of a single bank. Sometimes the SCAMMERS pretend they are a third-party company that works with many banks to broaden their attack. Sometimes the SCAMMERS will set up a FAKE website with generic FAKE info like policies, glowing testimonies, etc., that are ALL FAKE to trick victims into believing they are legit (and they are NOT).
DO NOT BELIEVE THE *FAKE* POSTS BELOW THAT CLAIM THIS IS A LEGIT FRAUD PREVENTION NUMBER (and it is NOT).

3.  The SCAM can be run several ways but all of them require phone contact between potential victims and the SCAMMERS (may be a live person, may be a robot). This variant places a SCAMMER robocall to victims to warn of FAKE fraudulent transactions, gives a toll-free number to call back on or wants victims to call the CallerID number (and victims should NOT), listen to FAKE transactions purported to be victims' (guaranteed to be FAKE because anyone who calls this number will hear the SAME FAKE transactions), have victims panic because the FAKE transactions they hear are clearly not theirs, press #X for a SCAMMER rep who will then proceed to gather the victims' account details (card number, 3-digit code on back of card, etc.) and personal info (SSN, DOB, etc.) using any number of stupid tricks ("we need the 3-digit code to verify you have the card in your possession") to dig, dig, dig info from victims. Sometimes, the FALSE posts will claim all victims need to supply when they call is their phone number and area code. What they don't say is what ACTUALLY will happen -- victims give the info only to be told the info don't match and they are being transferred to a SCAMMERS rep who will then proceed to STEAL victims' info. No matter what happens during the call, the call will be structured in such a way that will end in victims talking to the SCAMMERS. The talking *HAS* to happen in the end because that's how the SCAMMERS get to STEAL victims' info.

4.  For victims to readily give up info, victims have to believe they are talking to a legit fraud prevention Dept. or company (and victims are NOT, victims are talking to SCAMMERS) and why the SCAMMERS go to great lengths to "age" toll-free numbers by posting FAKE posts over many months/years, again to try to convince potential victims that this FAKE SCAMMING company has been in business for a long time and therefore must be legit (and it is NOT). Just check the dates of all the posts below. At some point after the number has been sufficiently aged, the SCAMMERS will begin SCAMMING on the number and the posting rate will increase dramatically. There are OTHER toll-free numbers being aged in parallel right now to prepare for the day when the SCAMMERS have to abandon this particular toll-free number because they've been busted on this number.

5.  The SCAMMERS will then proceed to steal money and victims' IDs. This can happen in various ways. One way is to clone cards using victims' info and sell the clones or use the clones themselves. More ambitious and sophisticated SCAMMERS can try to get access to victims' checking and savings accounts, move money around and clean them out. SCAMMERS can also open new credit accounts using victims' stolen IDs and spend, spend, spend on victims' dime leaving victims to clean up destroyed FICO scores and totally screwed credit reports. Anything can happen once SCAMMERS have victims' info in hand.

The best defense is to *NOT* to interact with this SCAMMING phone number in any way.

I just got a call from 1-800-704-8950 claiming they were navy federal.  I called the NFCU number on the back of my credit card and spoke with some one.  They said it was NOT a NFCU phone number and that there were no notations on my account.  hmmmm.

Yes, this was a valid call from Navy Federal verifying a purchase my husband had JUST made online.  They do this quite often to prevent theft so I wasn't surprised.  They only ask you to verify your zip code I believe.  Automated system that lists the purchase price, date and seller and asks you to hit a button to either verify, say it's fraud or repeat the item in more detail.

Phone number is legit. Called 800-704-8950 (from a phone# listed on my account) and it gave me my full name, last 4 of credit card, and the transaction amount/location in question. It asked me for my zip and to confirm I made this transaction. No personnel info was asked for, just zipcode.

Whenever a stranger calls you about your card, never give out any info but call the number on the back of your card. Since you called them and you know the number you dialed is legit, you can give them any info you want.

I just received the same call as Ms. Turner above.  I'm on the phone with Navy Fed right now to verify.  According to the rep I'm speaking with, it IS indeed NFCU's fraud prevention department.  But I do feel better having confirmed my recent charges with a person I'M calling, rather than with a machine.

Recieved an "Automated Call" from "Navy Federal Card Fraud Prevention" (800-704-8950), requesting personal information about recent activity to my VISA charge card and was unsure if this is a valid caller or not.  Could you please identify callers number?  I feel uncomfortable giving personal data to a "Machine" and this could be very well be a possible scam to get into my banking accounts!!
Thank you,
Kathleen Turner
